We arrived on Saturday afternoon and took a metro out to our camping spot on the river. After setting up our spot we went in seach of a Supermarket to try some awesome German sausage but came back with marinated pork. Sunday as always meant a sleep -in. Following breakfast and a keen ambition on my part to make it to a beer garden I said to Neetz come on we better explore this city. Without letting Neetz know of my only intention (to make it to a beer garden) (neetz here...as if I didn't know tezz's intention of going to the beer garden, he pretty much dragged me there quietly not saying anything but "nah lets go this way") we strolled past some places and took about 5 photos. From there the truth came ... read more

Hello everyone, Brady and I are doing really well. We are having an absolute blast! We arrived in Frankfurt on the third, but Lufthansa lost our bags (we are still waiting on them as of right now). We have really not done a lot of sightseeing, rather hanging out with Sophie and her friends who are all great. Her parents are the nicest people, very hospitable. The first night we had traditional dinner called spatzle (pronounced shpetzla) which is homemade dough noodles...delicious. Their beer is amazing. The local beer is very spicy and finishes super clean. The wine from the area is extremely dry, red wine made from grapes grown in the neighboring city. Last night Sophie had her 18th birthday and it was pretty wild and so much fun. The drinking age here for beer and ... read more

Greetings from Marburg! I hope life is treating all of you well wherever you are! Germany is fine; slightly warm, but we’re adjusting. There have been a couple of technical/practical changes here: 1. I’ve moved to a new place. I knew I was going to move since I arrived in Marburg. The apartment that I lived in last month is owned by the program where I’m studying German. They had a huge influx of students for the month of June (about 50-60 more!) and so they turned my apartment that I shared with two other girls into classrooms. My old bedroom now has about 30 desks in it for students who are learning basic German grammar. Luckily, I’ve moved just down the road. Not too much further! I’m staying with 2 girls from Germany and ... read more

BerlinJulie J Vanover I arrived in Berlin much later in the day than I had planned because of my visit to St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. I didn't get checked in at my hostel until about 9pm and I still needed dinner. So I headed over to the main street a block away from my hostel and had an Indian Buffet. While I was eating I ran into two girls that I had stayed with in Budapest, they were on a pub crawl and seemed to be very much enjoying themselves. As I was walking back to my hostel I walked past a building that at first glance appeared to be a vacant building. Upon further inspection there were many red lights in the back of the building so I wandered back there to see what ... read more

Auf Wiedersehen Deutschland Europe » Germany » Berlin By sfkarenJune 6th 2007 Well, we are in Berlin and we have reached the end of our trip. While we will miss the amazing architecture, rich history, and wealth of frothy beverages, (oh, and the David Hasselhoff shrine here at the hostel) we are really looking forward to being back in the good ol' US of A with all the funny little comforts of home that we took for granted. It has been a long journey through two amazing countries (long enough that Grant would like to report he has grown a full beard--he's very proud). We can now say we've stayed on a farm in Iceland, driven the autobahn (and survived), gotten an exclusive tour of the Porsche Factory... read more

Well....where to start... I spent about 10 days staying with Sue in Berlin which was very spoiling to me... I ended up crying the day before I was to leave in a Turkish internet cafe... my first real break down on this trip - not caused by the sights :) Berlin is an amazing city filled with so much old and new architecture...so many scars throughout the city...marking their war torn past. The first night in town I was walking down the street with Sue and her friends when I realized that the grafitti decorated wall next to me was the one and only Berlin wall...which I had watched awestruck as a child being torn down, worlds away over the TV. Berlin is crazy like that...filled with things that I had only heard about or ... read more

The last three days have been very nice, slow days. In fact the days have been so slow it isn't worth writing up each day individually so I will lump them together here. I have had a chance to simply hang out with Kris, Thom and family, and see a little bit of daily life in Germany. Well, ok. To be completely fair, I am not sure that Kris and Thom represent "native" Germany since they live in Army housing and spend much of their day interacting with English speakers rather than German speakers, but it has still be a nice experience. Sunday we drove about 45 minutes from Weisbaden to the town of Schollkrippen where we visited the Brauhaus Barbarossa. This restaurant/brewery was recommended by one of Thom's German employees and it was a nice ... read more
