ok, advice first and foremost. if you are ever going to get a night train, make sure you reserve a seat. and, more importantly, make sure you reserve a bed. we didnt do either of these, and instead found ourselves walking up and down the train for an hour just trying to find somewhere to sit. eventually found somewhere, and sat. it's pretty damn hard to sleep in those chairs i tell you. so we spent 8hours in a carriage on a train, just sitting and trying to sleep. i managed to get a couple of hours, but this was only by lying on the floor of the train, half underneath the seating. it was bizarrely comfy, but this was probably only because the chairs where so terrifyingly uncomfortable. we survived though, somehow. OH!, before all ... read more

Hello! June 15, 2007 a group of four exchange students of Technische Universität Darmstadt (3 Finns & 1 American) rented a car and drove down to southern Germany to spend a long weekend near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Now after visiting the place I can tell it is a great place to spend a summer holiday - especially if you like outdoors activities like hiking, biking, swimming or mountaining climb. It takes about 4-5 hours to drive down to Garmisch-Partenkirchen from Darmstadt. We stayed on autobahns and trusted our way to the Navigator. "She" said to follow first the autobahn A5, then A6 to Heilbronn, then A81 to Stuttgart, then A8 towards München and finally A95 to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Estimated travelling time: 4 hours and some minutes. All went well, except for we got stuck for 2 hours on the ... read more

You can get anything you want at the KaDeWe Department Store on Tauentzienstrße in the center of Berlin. It has to be one of the biggest Dept. stores in the world and I've seen some BIG ones- Mitschoshi in Tokyo, Macy's in New York City, Jordan Marsh in Boston. One of the best things about the way Val and I travel is that we can take all the time we want to immerse ourselves in the culture rather than running around with a tour group seeing all the major tourist sites ( been there, done that and will do it again). But for these longer trips when we have the luxury of spending a week or more in one city, we can savor the pace and 'study' how people live their lives. Last year I was ... read more

We greeted our first full day in Germany with a lovely long lie-in that saw us emerging at gone 10am into the gorgeous summer sun. Gone were the rainclouds of yesterday and the world looked like a much cheerier place for it. We tucked in to one of my favourite German foodstuffs for breakfast - Bretzeln! They are like pretzels but much bigger, freshly baken and bready rather than crunchy. I was a happy bunny indeed. That´s more than can be said for my sister however, as she was looking worse today than she did yesterday despite sleeping for almost 12 hours. She was sick all through the night so didn´t put up a fight when we suggested she see a doctor. Glynn and I tagged along for the ride to the clinic and then ... read more

The first time I visited Berlin it was in early February 1990, a scant 2 months after the Berlin Wall had fallen. The city was still divided except for a a few cement panels that had been sledge hammered down to make a short passage way for people to crawl through. All along the wall there were ' maul peckers' - people with hammers, chisels and any other instrument they could whack at the hated wall. Students and kids were clammering all over the wall. The German friends I was with looked panic stricken as several uniformed guards approached the youngsters and told them to get down. One remarked that only a few months prior those students would have been shot by the same guards. They still couldn't believe the wall was actually coming down. Even ... read more

A mere matter of two and a half weeks ago we were arriving back in the UK after a year's worth of adventures abroad and yet here we are now, back on foreign shores and busy lapping up yet more history, culture and spectacular scenery. It´s good to be back! Our trip to the Black Forest in south-west Germany began with a very wet start to the day. We had intended to take the bus to Birmingham airport but it was chucking it down with rain and the prospect of gettng drenched on a 20-minute walk to the bus stop was far from appealing. Instead, we swallowed our financial pride and forked out a whopping £10 for a taxi that barely took 15 mintues to get there. To think that in South America we could ... read more
