Dear family, friends, housepets, field mice, and other creatures: I am so sorry that it has taken me so long to write a proper blog! However, you will be happy to know that I have been busy practicing my German, meeting new friends, and wandering around all sorts of places. In order to spare you hours of time reading this blog (or minutes, really), I’ll only put down the highlights. First of all, two weekends ago (May19th), Meaghan and I decided to visit this tiny medieval town called Rothenburg ob der Tauber in northern Bavaria. Highly recommended by Rick Steves ( a traveler whose advice I find valuable), this tiny town boasts an impressive wall around the city, Riemenschneider artwork, and I believe they may be the only town that can say that the last ... read more

I am having a real shocker with emails and am about to send postcards to you all!!! Lets try again!!! COLOGNE PART II Before Berlin we had 2 days in Munich which is another interesting city. I think I had told you we were doing a Beer and Food walking tour, well it was a great night!!! Went to the Oktoberfest Museum before trying different types of beers and pretzels. Finished the evening at Hofbrauhaus with some other Aussie couples, surprise, surprise!!! We are staying here for a night and will check out the Cathedral before proceeding down towards the Rhine, hopefully to do a day cruise, then onto the Black Forest. We need to be in Zurich on Friday to fly to Athens to start our Greek Islands part of the trip!! Hope all are ... read more

Today we were together for the WHOLE day! It is a holiday weekend in Germany and today we decided to hit up a few museums in Kassel. First off we got a little lost in the rain and stopped to ask for directions at this delicious chocolate/cafe/breakfast place..which we would later return to. We went to the Orangerie and went into a Marble Bath Room which was very grand, but can never be and never was used as a functional bath...which was a little kommisch (weird)... There were all sorts of gorgeous marble statues and reliefs (sculptures) which depicted ancient greek myths. They were really interessting to look at. After that museum we headed back to the cafe and had a slice of cheese cake and some hot drinks. We bought some nifty little chocolates which ... read more

I don't really know where to begin. It's all been a bit crazy since I arrived, tired and sweaty, off the lovely (cough, splutter) Easy Jet flight from Edinburgh to Munich. I have to say, thoughts of "so...what if they're axe murderers...?" did pop into my head but I was warmly greeted by Veit (the father) at the gate and I felt a lot more comfortable trundling along in the big spacious car with the windows rolled down, being given a potted history of Munich by my employer/family member. It was a little nerve wracking to say the least when I arrived at their small but modern and bright house in Wolfratshausen. The boys pretty much ran away in fear but Magdalena (the mother, who is Spanish) greeted me warmly and it wasn't long before we ... read more

I'm writing this a week after being home, and Europe feels like decades ago! There was really only one weekend in between the last update and coming home, and that was the weekend that Annette, Pierrot and Laurent captured me and took me to the Mosel Valley. They picked me up Friday night, after I sorta packed and started to get ready to come home. We drove to a small village outside of Cochem, and stayed in a holiday apartment. It was really cute, with a wonderful bed and the village had some great food and wine! I ate so well that weekend, let me tell you! We went to Burg Eltz, which was a really cool castle where my camera ran out of batteries. It of course rained on the steep walk down and ... read more

Mittwochs sind ... read more

Whew! Arriving in Germany was a whirlwind. We had gotten used to freezing temperatures, desolate countryside, and locals who all spoke English. Yesterday we arrived in Frankfurt and found it quite a challenge. It is the extreme opposite from Iceland here. Germany is experiencing unusually hot weather, and English speakers are much harder to come by. Simple things like reading a menu are pretty impossible even with our translation guide.... so beer, bratwurst, and pretzels (and I mean PRETZELS), a few of the only things we do understand, are more than getting us by so far. We arrived at our hostel in Munich today. A beautiful city. We will spend 4 days here, which is a very welcome break from moving to a new location every day. And the prices! Paying a "normal" amount for ... read more

Guten Tag everyone and greetings from Berlin..... I don't want to make this an unabashed advert but believe me, there is more going on in this city than any other city in Europe. Even after 17 years, construction cranes are all over the landscape....especially in the eastern part. New buildings are going up, old buildings are being rehabbed, wall areas are turned into parks. Even areas that you'd think would never improve are being gentrified. It's not just in one area, but all over the place. There is a feeling, an atmosphere of growth, but also personality in all parts of the city. You can go to Kreuzberg, which has a big multi-cultural fair and parade this weekend; go to Prenzlauer Berg, an upcoming former part of the east and see all the alternative lifestyles. ... read more
