Sleeping in was getting up at 7am for our morning city tour of Berlin with Benny, a local guide. We went past CHARLOTTENBURG GATE, VICTORY STATUE, Parliament, a canal, Berliner Dom, a massive train station and lots of graffiti. Our first stop was Brandenburg Gate. It just seemed massive against everything else around it. There was a man and woman in military dress posing in front of the gate which did make for a nice picture. We also rode by the TV Tower, town hall, Opera house, Parliament, and embassies of Saudi Arabia, India, Africa, Netherlands and Italy. We also saw a building with numerous bullet holes that was the Traffic Ministry Building and Hitler's old bunkers are underground near here. I have an aunt that was born and raised in Berlin. She was shot in ... read more

Note: This message was written at 11pm, Sunday evening (May 13) I smell like drunk men. Even after I’ve washed my hands five times. Why, do you ask? Well, it’s a rather long story, but here’s the short version: after a pleasant visit to Bonn, my travel buddies and I got stuck on a train ride back with drunken soccer hooligans. Didn’t matter which car you were in, you couldn’t escape them. The car in which we happened to find seats also featured a CD player blasting German football songs—complete with loud, drunken hooligan singers—and enough beer cans to fill a landmine in Vegas. Literally. To make our experience even more enjoyable, five Irish guys behind us—drunk, of course—were pleasantly and robustly singing/telling the IRA where they could shove their ideology (hint: it’s a body ... read more

I just bought two cuckoo clocks! Ever since I got here I thought it would be cool to get one because they're so neat and distinctly German. So, today Angie took me to a cuckoo clock outlet in Kaiserslautern (called House of Clocks Gifts and Collectables--www.houseofclocks.com) and we looked at the clocks. While looking at the clocks, I learned a lot about them. The store we were at had 3 types. The two more traditional types with all the gears in side that need winding every once in a while are called one day and eight day movement clocks. They sound the best and they have the traditional "tick-tock" sound to them. The one day movement ones have to be wound every day, and the eight day movements only have to be wound once a week. ... read more

6am came too quickly as I got about 3 hours sleep. While we were stopped waiting for the elevator to go down to breakfast, some short dark haired girl yelled out to her friend, "We'll have to find another guy to buy us dinner tonight!". She then looked at my friend and me and stated, "Some guy bought us dinner last night". I honestly didn't hear her so I looked at her dumbfounded while Suzi said "Uh huh". Really what were we to say. When we went down to breakfast, 2 very long lines awaited us and after given our room #, the longer of the 2 was ours. By the time we got to the actual buffet there was no butter, no buns & only one type of bread and some cheeses and like one ... read more

Past Jena, we arrived in Berlin about 4:45pm to our hotel, Econtel which was odd looking yellow/green with murals painted on it. This funky looking hotel was in West Berlin and had free Internet in the lobby. The rooms were plain with no ac but luckily it was cool out, so we kept the window open. Each time we took a shower, the floor got wet because it was nothing more than a drain in the corner of the bathroom with a curtain going around! It was clean and a decent size and was quiet. We had our 1st optional excursion; a "BERLINER DINNER" in East Berlin at Wirtshaus Alte Stadt Mauer. This would end up being the only place where we would get a choice of appetizer, entree and dessert for the entire trip. The ... read more

i thought about making a list of places i don't want to go, but i couldn't come up with anything ... a person could travel to the same place 20 times ... and see 20 different things they didn't see the first time meet 20 different people they've never met before ... have 20 different experiences ... ... see the pattern here. "there" is every place i want to be. there will always be something to see, new or old so i'm done with lists less thinking + more action = traveling hmm, more math!... read more

Here you go mom, this is just for you, and I should add that although JO was doing the typing, I was there helping. I don't think I was mushing, unfortunately there hasn't been much of that. But things on my end are going really well. Today was a really good, day and already I and finding myself much more comfortable in my surroundings I rode a bike to and from school today and got lost twice. The second time I didnt know I was lost. The first time I went straight instead of turning and I went only a blosk too far. THe second time I passed my house and didnt notice. The my host father drove by, just a coincidence, and told me. I was a little embarassed but found it very humourous. Today ... read more

We arrived in Frankfurt earlier than scheduled, around 9am rather than the original scheduled time of 9:30. So the answer to question #1 is yes. During dinner I watched the movie "Because I said so" with Mandy Moore. I thought it was cute. Our flight also had a bit of "eye candy" with a group of handsome soldiers. One young man was in our row and was a fun talker. Once they landed they had a 5 hour bus ride to their station. There was also a "High maintenance woman" in front of me. Nothing seemed to please her and she made a rude comment about how can all these Americans afford to go to Germany. Question #2's answer was approximately 30-45 minutes of a twilight sleep listening to the music of King Arthur on my ... read more

In two weeks, my family and I are to set out on our biggest home exchange adventure ever. No agreement forms have changed hands. We barely have an address of the place, not to mention a key. And yet, we are totally convinced of the success of this unusual home exchange. How is this possible? The picture that I gained from our home exchange partner through our correspondence is of someone trustworthy and reliable. Home exchange is all about trust! The object we are exchanging our home for is neither a house nor a boat. But what else could it be? Here is a hint: it is ancient and made out of stone. I'll keep you posted! ... read more
