Somehow, one of my pictures got left off yseterdays blog so the last three captions got out of sync. I'll repost the missing photo and you can figure out the long walk was Elizabeth walking through woods (NOT the creek as caption would appear) and the reward at end is my dessert.... read more

It's Thursday and I haven't posted due to a lack of an internet connection. Actually I would have posted Tuesday's blog before leaving Germany, but I was abruptly reminded in the wee hours Wednesday morning of the Cardinal Rule of writing electronically: SAVE EARLY AND SAVE OFTEN. I'm not sure what I did, but it doesn't really matter now. Suffice it to say that after writing a near epistle, this handy dandy little iPad slipped and one of my fat fingers (it's a good thing I didn't become a proctologist) hit something and "poof" everything was gone! But I was able to summarize it, more or less, on the long train ride to Paris yesterday (Wednesday). Basically, Tuesday was long. We saw lots, I mean LOTS, of castles. We started by cruising down the Rhine, then ... read more

Well, we're here! We had an uneventful, if cramped, flight. I think I am going on a diet before I attempt another overseas flight! Seriously, it was much more uncomfortable than it used to be. I must be getting old. Elizabeth couldn't get to sleep, so she was pretty tired today. She carried on like a real trooper, though, and I was real proud of her. I kept her up until 7pm (I was trying for 8), and when she collapsed her last words were "I promise I won't wake up" becaused I had warned her about going to bed too early and then waking up at 3am. She said our most interesting experience today was lnavigating the train station at Mainz. Our train from Franknfurt was delayed in route, and we missed our conecting train ... read more

This morning I woke up without having anything planned for the day. I had to add an extra day to the trip before eschwege because of a mix-up of arrival days and I added it here. I threw some clothes on and went to breakfast (which was really impressive for being included in the price of hostel, all you can eat, meat, cheese, rolls, joghurt, cereal, and made-to order coffee). I went to sit down and noticed the only other person in the room. I had a split second decision to make: should I just say good morning and sit at my own table… or should I sit with him? I decided to sit down and talk and it changed my whole day! I found out his name was Hiro and he was a Japanese student ... read more

We visited Heidelberg on route to the Rhine Valley. Its castle was pretty to look at from far but there was not much inside it. The “philosophers walk” on the opposite bank of the river gave good views of the town. Unfortunately, the shops were closed on Sunday. We had our pork knuckles and fresh beer before we arrived at Bacharach at 1030pm. Our accommodation in this quiet town was in a castle! The idea of living in a castle excited us but we came to realize that living in a castle means long flights of steps up the hills and it wasn’t such a good idea with our packs in the dark. So we called a cab and arrived just in time to check in much to our relief. Bacharach makes a good base to ... read more

I said my good-byes to Katja, I will miss her she is an amazing, fun person. I was going to catch the train with only one switch to Bacharach but the train was going to be late 30 mins so I would not be able to make my connections, so I caught another train that was direct. It was longer but that's okay. I meet a mother and daughter from Californa who were going to Bacharach as well. When we departed I said "Might bump into you guys later". From the train I made my way to the information office. The lady there told me the hostel was just up some stairs just aorund the cornor. Up SOME stairs my ass, try 500 of them with a huge backpack on in really hot weather. I barely ... read more

We gots on the train to Germany! We stopped in Cologne...gots some coffee and checked out a bad-ass Cathedral! Good thing it was Easter or we may have not gotten in. We get on a train to Koblenz where we took a cruise down the Rhine river, passing different medieval towns with castles n'at, making our way to the small town of Bacharach. In Bacharach (I think their mayor's name is Burt...heehaw), we took a stroll, saw some hobbits and even ate dinner where we were served by a hobbit! It was all pretty cool, but kind of awkward, cause we were the only people there that weren't old.... read more

Spent the whole day going up and down the Rhein by boat and by train whenever we missed the boat. It was a rainy day, but we made the best of it. Cruising the Rhein on a double decker cruise boat, watching the myriad castles or remnants of fortresses is a nice relaxing day activity. We got off the boat to visit the town of St Goar which is at the base of the Rheinfels castle. Why is the Rhein consdered romantic? It's not like the Romans had much success in looting and raiding these parts. So, it's not from Roman barbarism. The Robber Barrons mastered the art of taxing Rhein river traffic, except when the river merchants managed to raise armies of sufficient strength to destroy certain fortresses. Not much romance there you'd think. So ... read more

The UNESCO world heritage site town of Bacharach was technically Germany's capital for a few years when the robber Baron of Bacharach was left in charge of Germany by his brother who was on his way to loot and pillage on another crusade. This is the same Baron who chose to elect an unknown Swiss castle owner to the title of Holy Roman Emperor in the hope of having a weak head of state. Turns out that Swiss Robber Baron was named Hapsburg, and he went on to found one of the strongest and longest running dictatorships Europe has known. Now Bacharach is a small village in the heart of the grape growing Rhein valley with picturesque and quaint castles dotting the countryside. Wine is an important part of the economy, but judging by the United ... read more
