After I got to my hostel in Cologne around midnight, I realised that I was the only one in the dorm room. There was no luggage, clothes, or any sign that anyone else had come in. The hostel was like a large house with three floors, and I think the owner lived on the top floor. I’d asked the owner that morning if there were other people arriving and he said he was fully booked. The reception closed at 8pm though, so if people weren’t here by now then they wouldn’t be coming. Well that was enough to freak me out! I was instantly convinced that this was some sort of scam to rob/murder single travellers. I had a key to the room, so before I locked the door for the night, I literally searched every ... read more

Today, it is on to Bacharach on the Rhine. We missed a train but quickly regrouped and found another. I have an app on my phone that makes it so easy to find which trains are going where we want to go. Bacharach is such a change from Amsterdam, so quiet and low key. We have a great room with a balcony overlooking the street. Flowers are everywhere. Our train trip was along the Rhine and the scenery was beautiful, river on one side and vineyards on the other. We settled in and spent the afternoon walking the town. We had a fun dinner at a Greek restaurant with singing and a little dancing. Afterward we walked up to the Postenturm which is a large tower in the vineyards in the hills. Great views of the ... read more

Sunday, Sept. 8 I woke up ready to continue my trip and laugh at my stupidity demonstrated last night. The weather was cool as I took off to roam the streets of Bacharach. Since it was Sunday, a few of the shops were closed, but the restaurants were open, and that was important. There were such amazing smells coming from the kitchens, and I was ready to eat. I stopped at a cute, quirky place run by a woman in her mid sixties who spoke very good English. She said that Joe Cocker had performed the night before in an open air amphitheater on top of the Lorelei Cliff very near Bacharach. She and her employees are big fans, so she shut down the restaurant on a Saturday night so they could all go to the ... read more

t's been a big day! I stayed in a little pension, which in this case means a few rooms above a business. My room was fine; I could turn around in the bathroom AND in the shower! However, the business below was a nice little open-air bar that had a party going until 4:00 a.m. I considered the addage, “If you can't beat 'em, join 'em”, but I just couldn't do it! I had breakfast on their little breakfast terrace. European breakfasts are always a little quirky to us Americans; there was an assortment of what we could call lunch meat, some cheese, and hard rolls. Cochem is a really pretty, traditional German town which sits on the edge of the Mosel River, and like most of these little towns, there is a castle on the ... read more

Monday 2ndSept Cologne to Pommern, Mosel Valley 96 miles RHINE & MOSELLE VALLEY Left the campsite at 9.15am and drove via Bruhl, Wesseling and Bonn (all very built up and quite horrible drive with a congloberation of motorways!!) and eventually got to Konigswinter, which in comparison was surprisingly quite pretty! Found the cog train comparatively easily, considering the lack of signs and paid the 10 euros for the return journey to the ruins of Kongswinter castle. Fantastic views of the Upper Rhine although still a little hazy in the distance. Not much of the old ruined castle left but still good to see! Drove through Linz and had our lunch stop at Bad Honnigen which also proved to be a pretty little village that went right down to the waters edge. Lots of old half timbered ... read more

After we left Dachau concentration camp we made our way up the Rhine Valley towards Bacharach where we would stay in a castle that night. It was pretty quiet on the bus and Kate could sense we were not in a fun mood so she showed us the video of Jordan (Australia) and Darcy (Australia) skydiving. Jordan and Darcy are sisters. I remember Jordan was 18 or 19 and Darcy was the older sister who also served in the Australian military in Afghanistan. They were brave enough to go skydiving each after the accident. Other people who considered it pulled out before paying the deposit. The skydive was in plane instead of a helicopter and I probably saw the plane in the air because they saw us paragliding. When they went up Jordan actually got sick ... read more

I've just had my evening meal here at the hostel, (the food is really good here). anyway, bit of an embarrassing episode. I usualy pay for my meal at reception and the lady ... read more

I'm in a bunk room with only one other person which is brill,. my roomie is a Japanese girl called Mika, who seems friendly enough. Thursday, July 26 Our plans for the day were to drive to the village of Bacharach and ride a river boat down river to St. Goar, tour the ruins of Rheinfels Castle and return up river to our car. From there we planned to drive down to the Mosel River to find a hotel. The village of Cochem was our target. Once again we were lucky with outstanding weather. It was warm enough for shorts as we toured the Rhine. We had R. Steves guide book to tell us the history of each of about a dozen castles along this section of the river. In St. Goar, we took a shuttle up the mountain to the Rhinefels castle. It was enormous and amazing to see how mighty it once was and how it is now. R. ... read more
