Today we decided to finally be true tourists. We rented a car for a day trip to Chichen Itza, Il Kil, Coba, and whatever we had time for in between. We opted for the rent-a-car because it seemed cheaper and we're not fans of going on group tours. Alamo showed up right to our hotel with the car, we quickly filled out the paperwork and went on our way. It was an easy drive with a direct route, however a little boring. You're driving through miles of tall grass, but I didn't care too much, just happy to be traveling in another country. When we arrived to Chichen Itza, the entrance was jammed up with buses and cars, so we reluctantly paid to park in a dirt lot close by. I suppose it was better than ... read more

North America » Mexico » Quintana Roo » Tulum April 13th 2017

We spent the last couple days just lounging on the beach, drinking beers, and eating amazing vegan food. Our hotel, VILLA PESCADORES, had a great beach and restaurant set up just steps away from our bungalow. It was easy to score a beach lounge bed and post up all day there. We would have never left if it wasn't for our need to get food. They had plenty of food there that looked amazing, but unfortunately not super vegan friendly. The chips and guacamole were great and they did have a veggie sandwich that we ordered from the main restaurant. We especially enjoyed the presence of all the animals on the beach. A few dogs and one cat we would see on occasion. One dog in particular, named Boxita, was really sweet and she seemed to ... read more

North America » Mexico » Quintana Roo » Tulum April 11th 2017

Last night we stayed at a Comfort Inn in Cancun near the airport due to our long day of travel. Coming from Los Angeles, we had a 4 hour layover in Mexico City that really spread out the day for us. So, overall, our travel day was about 12 hours. This morning, the hotel called a Taxi for us so we could catch an ADO bus at the airport. The driver said it would be around 320 pesos to get to the airport, but he would only charge us 1000 pesos to go all the way to Tulum. It sounded like a pretty good deal and even though the bus would have been cheaper, this saves us the time and hassle of having to catch two seperate buses down to Tulum as well as another Taxi ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu August 31st 2012

We were a little bummed that we didn't plan our trip enough ahead of time so we could do the trek up to Machu Picchu, but minus a few obnoxious fellow tourists, the train ride to the base town of Aquas Calientes was pretty spectacular. The town itself can be described as "cute" being nestled in the base of the mountains with amazing greenery surrounding it and lacking any kind of access from public roads. This town is the only jump off point to going to Machu Picchu, so obviously is pretty touristy and not lacking in the touter department. Our hostel was super ghetto, but we weren't too concern because we were only going to sleep for a short while so we could catch the first line of buses up the mountain to Machu Picchu. ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca August 26th 2012

08/24/12 When arriving to Puno, we were really started to feel the altitude at this point. We checked into our hotel and the front desk were super nice about hooking us up with some Coca tea to ease our ailments. We walked down the street to the main plaza and of course there was a parade! This parade was rad because it was little kids with their pets, whether it be a dog, parakeets in a cage, or even fish in a fishbowl! The market down the street was interesting and we managed to track down some Chicha Morada and it was pretty amazing. Chicha Morada is a warm drink prepared with purple corn with the addition of fruit, cinnamon, clove, sugar, etc. I believe it was called something else, but I can't remember. As far ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa August 23rd 2012

08/21/12 Not much sleep on the overnight bus to Arequipa...too many twists and turns, and little on the chilly side. However, arriving in Arequipa was well worth the ride. It was very picturesque: snow capped mountains, rivers, cobble stoned streets, and baroque style architecture. By now, I'm starting to feel the altitude. It was a bit strenuous to breathe normally and I was getting mild headaches. When we arrived at the hostel, all we wanted to do more than anything was to take a hot shower, but our room wasn't ready and we ended up waiting several hours. In the meantime, we were too exhausted to do anything, so we just hung out in the lobby and used the internets. I Skyped with my nephews and nieces, and Megan probably just looked at fashion magazines and ... read more
