Burg Stahlek, one of the many Robber Baron castles on the Rhein is now a Youth Hostel. The interior has been beautifully redesigned while the outer castle has been restored to it's original form. We ate supper at the Youth Hostel. The menu said "Turkey Curry". It had no noticeable curry nor chilli ... it was really a stew with potatoes and turkey and some vegetables. But, pretty good value nonetheless. ... read more

Left the graffiti strewn Paris train station behind enroute to the heart of the Rhein valley. The German ICE or Inter City Express trains don't go quite as fast as the French TGV, but are very punctual, quiet and smooth. They indicate the current speed on a small screen at the back of each rail car. The maximum speed we noticed was around 160 kmh, but it probably went a bit faster on some of the straight bits of track in France before it got to the hilly German Rhein country. ... read more

Guten Tag. May 3rd was a wonderful day, but I had to postpone my blog entry until today. Let me explain... I started out the day in Rothenburg. I woke up in my bed and breakfast for... what else? Breakfast. By the way... it's happening again. When I was in Italy for about a week, I began to comprehend the language better, and begin 'speaking' Italian. I have now been in Germany for about a week, and I was able to communicate purely in German to request my breakfast! Very fun! A wonderful bounty of meats, breads, a boiled egg, coffee, and milk. I learned that the 'cranky older woman' that I met last night was Frau Riedel, the person that the B&B was named for. I officially met her and her son (he's about 60 ... read more

Welcome to Germany trip 2009! This trip was a Christmas present from Mom and Dad-got to go with Dad and his coworker George on a business trip through Southern Germany. I don't want to forget anything (though I'm afraid I already have!) so I'm starting this blog to keep track of and share my experiences. Hope you all enjoy it. Day 1: Plane flight over was so painless! We got to ride in business class, which was AMAZING!!!! As soon as we got on board, they offered us free drinks. The goody bag with little travel bits was so neat (I especially appreciated the eye shades) and there were lots of movie options, etc. We even got a gourmet dinner (with wine, I might add...). Talk about the celebrity treatment. Anyway, we got into Frankfurt airport ... read more

Aug 27, Wednesday Up at 5:45 a.m., suitcase out at 6:20, bkfst at 6:30, on bus at 7 a.m.. Rest stop at border, 50 cents. Got to Cologne about 10:15 to go to Cathedral. Had a “big hour” (Marieke's term) to get a snack, use restroom, and visit Cathedral. Cathedral is very large, huge stained glass windows; bought two postcards (E1,80). Used RR at MacDonalds (.50) and got small cheeseburger and small soda (E1,00 each) (Sprite - had a little uncomfortable tummy on long ride - one pill from another tourite, and borrowed a wrist band from Cindy). Another lengthy time in bus to get to St.Goar for boat cruise on Rhine. One photo stop along the river at Remagen for bridge towers - of “end of war” fame, before getting to boat. Cruise was very ... read more

When people talk about 'Cycling the Rhein', this is the section they talk about from Mainz down to Cologne. Just beyond Mainz, the river narrows as it passes through a range of hills, and because of this the current speeds up. I think the story goes, that some bright spark thought, 'Hey, the boats all go slowly here because of the currents, and I need some money, so I'll stop them and tax them for passing through my land". So he built a little castle, and put these bridges out in the river to slow everyone down, and proceeded to collect his tax. All of his neighbours, rather than tell said so and so, to stop being a prat, and let the boats go past for free, thought this was a jolly good idea, and ... read more

We flew into Frankfurt then took the train (others went by van) to Bacharach. Those of us who went by train had a delicious and inexpensive meal in town before going up to the castle. The next day we enjoyed a river cruise before leaving for Italy. Patrick... read more

This past weekend, 6 of us from the CDC Language school took off (some slightly hungover from the kneipe tour...yours truly included) for the small and beautiful town of Bacharach. Bacharach is on the Rhein south of Koblenz and north of Mainz. It is one of the prettiest sections of the famous river. We took the train to Koblenz and then switched to another train to Bacharach. I think in total the trip was about 2 hours. We got a Schones Wochenende ticket which basically means that you can travel anywhere in Germany on the Regional Trains with a group of people for 35 Euros, up to 5 people. So it was super cheap to get there. When we arrived we found ourselves a quaint little German restaurant and had a fabulous traditional lunch. From there ... read more

July 6, 2007 More fun than Disneyland…no electricity required. I earned my hot apple strudel with ice cream today. I never stopped moving the whole day! We woke up and right after breakfast rented bikes. Our goal was to ride up the Rhine to St. Goar (2 towns away) and explore the local castle called the Rheinfels Castle from the 11th century. Before I tell of this fun day we are now in Germany! Yesterday we left the Netherlands for Germany. We were going on car trips of “no more than 2 hours” said Scott. So far all trips have been 4 ½ hours from one destination to another no matter what…this trip included. When we arrived however I was awe struck at the beauty. We are in the Rhine River valley. It is gorgeous. ... read more

We headed for Fussen early, and checked into our B and B (which is slightly better than and B and N). We wandered the relatively small town, wandered right out of the town and towards a waterfall, viewed said waterfall, then followed the flow of the river towards a big lake (which was disappointingly low in terms of water level, however the water was beautifully blue - being glacier water). Back in our room for the evening (after much too much work and walking for so few sights) we watched CNN world and MTV Europe on the ol tv, at groceries, and got to bed early. The next morning a delightful breakfast was brought directly into our room on a tray (I felt awkward, but it was cool nonetheless). The goal for the day, see Neuschwanstein ... read more
