Quick Notes: 1. I found that the following is how NOT to make friends in Germany: Waiter: "So, why don't you speak German?" Matt: "Because we won the war" 2. Germans love the sausage. I ordered a plate of assorted sausages and I thought they were pulling my leg with all the different "wursts" they had Headed for the Rhineland because that is where Matts family is from and because its beautiful. we stayed 2 days in bacarach and would highly recommend it. we wandered the streets and ate in cute restaurants. you know how they try to make you think you are in a medieval village in busch gardens but it ends up feeling fake? well this was exactly like that! it was gorgeous. anyway, nothing exciting to report about bacarach, but it was quite ... read more

Guten Morgen! Last we talked, I think that we were in Delft about to go to the Royal Delft factory. It was amazing. They have enormous mosaics of tiles with Rembrandt reproduction paintings on them and vases that are 12,000 euros! Everything there was very expensive because of all the hand painting but we did find a few knock-offs to buy! We stopped in The Hague for a stroll through the town on the way back to Gouda. The Hague was very busy and there is definitely a lot of money in that town! Yesterday, we left Gouda for Germany. We were sad to leave the Netherlands but Germany has been great so far! It took us four trains and getting a little lost in the giant train station at Utrecht to get into town but ... read more

Hello everyone, Fussen is a pretty little Bavarian town nestled in the mountains. It was a five hour train ride from Frankfurt. But worth it to visit two amazing castles. The first was Hohenschwangau Castle. It was built in 1833 and used as a summer home and hunting lodge by the Bavarian royal family. It was influenced by The Knight of the Swan(whoever that is) and the literal translation of the name of the castle is 'Land of Swan.' There were swans everywhere--pictures, light fixtures, even the door handles were shaped like swan's heads. Narrow passageways were built into the walls so that the servants could be invisible. They could even feed the stoves from these passageways. The castle had hot and cold running water. It was nice, as castles go, but next I visited Neuschwanstein ... read more

Hello all, As promised, here is my blog. I may have to be quick as there is a host of people waiting for me. I arrived in Frankfurt on Monday, September 12 at 7am. Nice flight, good seat. Someway, somehow I was able to communicate my way to a train ticket and even make my way through transfers without a lick of German. And all this with the equivalent of my own body weight strapped to my back. Good times. I arrived in Bacharach, very cute little town packed with German tourists, and made my way immediately to my youth hostel, which was in a castle on a hill. Yes, you read correctly, on a hill. Please refer above to the amount of weight I was lugging around. Why oh why did I not pick a ... read more

We went on on a short Rhine River cruise today. We started in Bacharach and went to St. Goar. Unfortunately, the weather was very wet and rainy, but we managed to have a great time. We arrived in Bacharach at about 9:30 in the morning and we decided to was to climb up to the castle. The first few steps were steep, but it was a pretty easy hike. (Our two-year-old walked most of the way herself.) Once you get to the top, you can go in the castle for free. There's a few vending machines and a hotel inside. They also have a ping-pong table on the grounds, so make sure you bring a ball and some paddles! Sorry this entry is so short. I will write more later. I just wanted to go ahead ... read more

As some of you may be aware, my girlfriend Becca has joined me for the end of the trip.  We began together in the small german town of Bacharech on the Rhine River. We have spent the last two days siping local white wines, riding down the river in a boat, touring ruined castles, and staying with an old german lady how cooks a mean breakfast. We are having a great time and wish you all well!... read more

From Amsterdam we worked our way down to Germany's castle-studded Rhineland. Along the way, we'll stop in Arnhem to visit the Netherland's first and largest open-air museum. This morning, after a yummy breakfast at the Hotel Kranenturm we'll take a walking tour of Bacharach. Then we'll head to St. Goar and hike up to the mighty Rheinfels castle, overlooking the Rhine. We'll tour the castle and cruise the Rhine. ... read more
