Up early to have breakfast and finish packing. There is a bus that leaves from very near to my hotel so I planned to get the one that left at 9:15. All good - you just pay the driver €2.80 and you're off. The bus arrived at the Central Train station about 15 minutes later so I had plenty of time to find my platform and where I needed to be standing before the train departed at 9:59. The train journey took 5 hours but it was very pleasant and a good way to see some more of the countryside. I arrived at Köln station just after 3pm and followed the instructions my cousin Tony (or Tonz as he is known to us!) to the platform for a train to Bergisch Gladbach. I missed one step ... read more

We arrive in Cologne (Köln in German) around 8 am. It's beautiful day weatherwise. By 9, we are beginning a walking tour of the city. My guide is a young man named Chris who likes to keep us amused with odd little stories. Cologne (Köln in German) is one of the country's largest cities. For much of its existence it occupied the west bank of the Rhine only. In fact, during Roman times it was a bastion of civilization against the Germanic tribes on the opposing bank. The city now straddles both sides of the Rhine. Cologne was heavily damaged, in fact almost levelled, during WWII. Its famous centrepiece, the Cologne Cathedral, is so large that it was used by allied bomber crews as a key landmark. The cathedral itself sustained heavy damage but remained standing. ... read more

The massive Cologne Cathedral dominates the skyline of the city. It was thought to be the highest structure in the world from 1880-1884. Constructed off and on over a period of more than 600 years, it was begun in 1248 and is reputed to be the final burial site of the bones of the three kings who visited the baby Jesus. Although it exterior is blackened from pollution, efforts are being made to restore it, but this is extremely difficult to do without damaging the stone from which it's built. Our cruise-supplied guide led us around the old city and then we decided to take an additional tour of the inside of the cathedral.... read more

Our last night was plagued by thunder and lightening so the planned pleasant stroll in the Saturday Market nearby and breakfast at Winterfelt was not looking promising. And it wasn’t. The cafe wasn’t open and the rain barely allowed time for a quick look, buy some supplies at a bakery for the train ride to Dusseldorf and have breakfast at a popular cafe that took your order at the counter and then the waitress came empty handed to the table to tell us it was ready to pick up. It was obviously popular because the coffee and food were good; there was no service. The public transport in Berlin is very organised and efficient. We had been on and off trains and buses many times and never waited more than 4 minutes for a connection. A ... read more

2017 was a year of major change for me. Eight years ago, I had moved to Hamburg to start a new job with cut-e; almost four years ago, I had moved to Singapore for a year to work in our local office there; and almost three years ago, I had returned to Hamburg. I had always been happy with my job, had found it fulfilling and fun, loved to work with my colleagues. But about a year after returning from Singapore I started realising that I was enjoying my job less and less. It became clear to me that the way my role had developed and the way I had developed were no longer aligned. My role there had been a mix between research and consultancy, which I had enjoyed very much since it reflected my ... read more

We flew from Belfast to Eindhoven yesterday, heading for Emmerich on the border between Germany and Holland in the Neiderrhein, to meet up with our friends Rita and Holger, and to do a bit of cycling and exploring of this beautiful area. We're staying at their lakeside cottage on the Wildweg lake. We had a fantastic welcome from Rita and Holger, and great advice for our travels, not to mention a fridge full of best German delicacies, beer and wine! Sunday 24th Oct Rita and Holger have lent us their bikes, so we headed out to explore our neighbourhood. Unusually for this flat terrain, we found hills! The route took us to Hochelten where we made careful note of the pancake cafe for future reference, then downhill to Elten, and on to Beek. From there we ... read more
