Geo: 52.3721, 9.73569Today was our last in the Netherlands, though we wouldn't be leaving the country alone. We organized to take a living souvenir with us on a temporary basis. Not kidnapping, but an arrangement for my cousin Marielle to join us for a week in Germany. We woke, had breakfast and packed our things. We left Jonathan's beer glass and bunch of souvenirs behind with the Vonks for postal to Australia (Mum and Dad, expect another package). It was time for another goodbye. We had really enjoyed our time in Heteren with Jan and Joke. We really enjoyed their company and appreciated all the kind hospitality.Again, we caught the train from Ede to Amsterdam. We met Marielle and boarded a train bound for Germany. It was a long ride. Two trains; the first was just ... read more

Day One: fter having an early night on our last night in Hamburg (and missing out on having drinks with Pat Rafter, Lleyton Hewitt and Tomik , yes we were disappointed to find out the following morning and even more so when the photos appeared on Facebook) we were up and ready to begin our Road Trip! The main idea behind a road trip was being able to visit the small towns that are not accessible by public transport. We were also getting very tired of jumping from city to city and not being able to get off at some of the wonderful little towns we would see along the way on our bus journeys. I also have a sneaking suspicion that Aaron wanted to feel the need for speed on the Autobahn which I am ... read more

What do you do when your school asks you to if you want to, again, spend a month of your summer vacation in Germany? Of course, you say "Yes" and then spend the month while your there analyzing if this is really your reality? While not being a German teacher, I am lucky to have made this trip not just once, but twice in the past three years. It really is the most awesome and unique experience. While I have traveled to a number of places, this trip stands out as being so special because I was actually able to become apart of the community and make connections that continue to each to grow each year. This exchange between Shaker Hts. H.S. and the Ratsgymnasium in Goslar Germany has been an reoccuring event for the last ... read more

Last weekend, Christiane and I went to the island of Langeoog, one of the East Frisian islands, about a three hour drive from Hamburg. The island is small, only about 15 km long and 5 km wide. There is a little village in its north western corner, some scattered houses and farms to the south of the village, and almost nothing to the east of the village. There are no cars allowed on the island, which you immediately notice because the background noise of driving cars and trucks is simply not there, and so it is amazingly quiet. Christiane and I caught the ferry from Bensersiel on the mainland on Friday afternoon. The trip takes about half an hour. The ferry stops at the southwestern end of the island, and from there, a train takes you ... read more

Ok so I have to be brief with this entry because I have 3 hours until I leave for Prague! Just as I predicted, this week has flown by and we have done all sorts of things we never thought we would ever do. Class was normal this week. I'm getting better about staying awake the whole time, and I really do find the subjects interesting. Monday morning we took a field trip to the European Parliament, and Tuesday morning we went to the Council of Europe. Both of these buildings are in Strasbourg so it was cool to see how much of political center Strasbourg really is. Tuesday night, Dr. Gaspar took us to Kehl, Germany which is right across the Rhine from Strasbourg. That was a really cute town, and we ate dinner at ... read more

Hey guys! Hope you enjoyed the Jubilee Weekend! I managed to see most of it whilst I was here, and it looked great, even if it did make me a little homesick - although its only two months until I'm back properly, and a month today until my weekend at home! As before, the weather is generally the same as at home, just slightly warmer, and so yes, we have also had plenty of rain (the most I've ever seen here) which came as a bit of relief at first after the sunbathing weather of two weeks ago. At first I was so pleased to be reminded of home, that I announced during my German class that I actually quite like rain, as it reminds me of home - to which they all laughed! It also ... read more

Hey guys! Hope all is well for you all! It's now the end of January, and less than 3 weeks until I'm back in the UK. Tomorrow I have my last classes for this semester, and then 4 exams in the coming weeks. Seems like just the other day I came here, and already half my time is over! On Monday I took a break from my studies to visit the world's most leaning building - The Leaning Tower of Suurhusen. And even better - it is covered in the semester ticket, so I didn't have to pay anything to get there! Who needs Pisa, when you can have Suurhusen? The tower is in a small village literally in the middle of nowhere, and with a bus turning up only once hourly, and it pouring down ... read more
