We all woke up late, well we didn’t get in until late. I woke up and already had 4500 steps for the day. We tried to be quiet since Dennis and Vinnie got in even later. Their poor cat was outside meowing. This cat was even more shy than Izzy. We opened the door to let the cat in, “you’re not my master”, poof gone. We felt bad. I moved the food and water to the porch as I knew the cat had to be hungry since it just wasn’t coming inside because of all the people. A few minutes later, I saw her coming up and eating. The kitchen counter was covered with pans of food from last night - we will have food today. Dennis and Vinnie wake up around 1 and we talk ... read more

This should have actually gone in yesterday’s blog. So, I called to get the pins for my credit cards. Susan said they were able to set the pins for their USAA cards on line. I tried getting it online but couldn’t find out how, so I called American Express first. This was for my Delta Reserve card. You know this is a card many businesses travel with. So, I got an agent and ask him how to get the pin. “we don’t have pins”. What, “nope, we don’t have them and you just need to find someone that will take your card and not sue a kiosk”. Are you kidding me, this is a travel card and I can’t use it at any kiosks??? I keep asking and I tell them about the USAA cards. He ... read more

Wed late afternoon I drove to Charlotte to stay in a hotel for the night. My flight was much cheaper (like in the $700 cheaper range) to fly out of CLT over RDU. The flight didn’t leave till 4 and I didn’t want to waste a vacation day driving so I headed to Charlotte to stay in a hotel for the night. The next morning, I got up early to start my work day and about 9 my boss sent out a request for a meeting (conference call for me meeting for everyone else) for 1pm. Hum, that was the time I was going to leave the hotel. Change of plans… I left for the airport around 11, finally found a long term parking place, checked in for my flights, grabbed a lunch to go and ... read more

Hannover was a complete unknown to us but as it revealed itself in playful statues, fossils and dinosaur bones, stately half-timber buildings and a lively streetlife in the evenings, we felt lucky that we had chosen to visit it.... read more

When planning our trek west back to Amsterdam and our return flight to Australia, Hannover appeared to be close to the halfway point from Berlin, so we decided to break our journey there. We had no idea what to expect, but booked a 2 night stay as we had done in Bratislava and Brno, and again we were on a tour of discovery.... read more

.The weather forecast for today was excellent. 26 degrees and dry. Therefore perfect for a scooter ride to Braunlage and the Wurmburg mountain top by cable car. An easy scooter ride. Road quite wide and only a couple of proper bends as we climbed up through the rather nice forest road. We arrived at Braunlage in under half an hour, drove past a lot of cafes and interesting shops to the cable car station. Fare to the top and back was €13 each which was a pretty reasonable price for a very high tech ride. No queue, just got into the next gondola round the wheel and off we went. We noticed that about 1/5th of the gondolas were special bike carts which were transporting cyclist’s bikes up the mountain and also returning hired Monsterwheels back ... read more

Off to a brilliant start today with a swim, 20 lengths, before breakfast then we breakfasted in the sunshine on sunflower seed rolls with sour cherry jam. Campsite reception had told me that if we took the path out of the back of the campsite and headed left we would come to the old East German border so off we went. A perfect day for a walk, first along a tree lined path then out into the sunshine. We came to the ‘border’ after about a mile and it was clearly marked by a wide path of massive concrete slabs with holes – presumably where the fence slotted in. We could almost imagine the people on the wrong side of the fence desperately trying to get across to the West with machine guns trained on them. ... read more

This stone marks the division of Walkenreid to the West and Ellrich to the East. I think the tree was planted as a memorial of the day the two were reunited.
