It had been a while since I had seen a new town. Since lots of my friends have moved to a new town for internship I thought I would start my visiting. A good friend named Lori moved to a town called Röttingen. It is a tiny town in northern Bavaria near the Romantic Street. It is about a 4-hour train ride to her town but I always enjoy a nice train ride through Germany. I left on Friday and Lori told me I would meet her host parents in Würzburg since her town doesn’t have a main train station. I got there and met her host mom who is actually the same age as us and they drove me to Röttingen. The village only has 2,000 people and it looks like a stereotypical quaint little ... read more

Photos from our recent trip to Germany - we visited the towns of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbuehl, Feuchtwangen, Schwaebisch Hall and Backnang, in the states of Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg. Just the way to get into the Christmas spirit, continental-Europe style...... read more

Our Thanksgiving holidays were spent in Germany, totally immersed in the advent of Christmas! The three of us, Kate, (colleague, not daughter) Keith and myself, headed out of Poland to see what the Christkindlsmarkt was all about. Kate and I have been looking forward to shopping the traditional markets, tasting the "gluhwein", and eating hearty German food! And I think Keith was ready to get on the autobahn. I can hear some of you snickering! Yep, he was speeding down the highway! Well, speeding for him, we were getting passed left and right! The recommended speed limit is 130 km/h (81 mph), and true to his nature he barely exceeded that! Although he did over-take some of the trucks, and as Kate said, drivers that looked to be a hundred and one years old! Oh, and ... read more

Well, I owe my good mood and good spirits to Kyle, Jason and Thea :) Thanks guys! Without their messages and support I'd probably still be the lonely sack of American I was the first two weeks I was here. Well, I still don't have any friends, but I'm getting to be ok with that. It's nice to have "me" time and not have to worry about catering to other people all the time. I get up and have brekky, sometimes I walk around the town a little bit or go to lessons, and have lunch.. sometimes I do my own German lessons.... jump on the computer...watch at least an hour of German TV (although I did find a French channel, lol) a day... open the lounge and do it all over again! The hotel owner's ... read more

Day 5, Thursday, Aug 28 - “Whirlwind tour” A lot of driving today, with 2-hour stop in walled city of Rothenburg - very quaint, cute buildings, shop after shop after shop; bought an “eis” (E0.60, small, but enough) -- Baileys gelato, yummy, and a couple of postcards.. Then on to Munich for an hour stop in late afternoon - quick view of Olympic area drivng past, then to Marienplatz for a couple of photos, and a walk to the Hofbrauhaus. Munich was pretty much flattened during the war (we're hearing a lot about the war) and rebuilt with a lot of old style in between more modern looking buildings. HBhaus is huge; we tried different beers. I had HB “Dunkel” (dark) - very good, but only had a .5 liter, since we had more bus time, ... read more

Just a little play on words there... Bad is in relation to baths over here. If you hear of Bad Hamburg or Bad Kissingen (hate to live there! lol) it is because it is a place that has bath houses and stuff! Interesting, huh? But yesterday it was decided that the hotel needed a deep purge of a lot of the dust that had built up because apparently the maids don't do an excessive amount of work. So Pieter whips out this special vacuums that have special filters and are much better at getting up all the dust. So the plan was we were going to do the first and second floor in the day and be done with it. Little did we know that the dust had built up so bad that we had -quite- ... read more

Well, I've been here about 10 days now. The culture shock here has been different in a few ways from Australia and my Euro trip last year. In Australia, I hadn't expected any so I was sent reeling for a little bit, and throughout my 5 month endeavor there, things would still blow my mind. Example... last week I was there I tried to get some film develop and it was like 20 bucks! Euro trip was different still because even though I was going to all these new cultures, I wasn't really -experiencing- them the way you do if you live in a country. And, even though a lot of my trip I was alone, it didn't really feel that way because I was meeting up with fellow travellers and making new friends. But here ... read more

Well hello! After an extensive gap, I'm back to relate more of my travels! Here's an update! After I finished Uni in Australia, I came back and graduated from my beautiful Maryville College (which I heartily miss!). As a graduation present to myself, I took myself over to Europe for a little over a month! I saw Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales, France, Luxembourg, Germany, Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands. It was wonderful! Top two cities were probably Scotland and Berlin for beauty and history and the good times I had there. After a year of internships and working hard I was offered a job at the beautiful Goldener Hirsch hotel in Rothenburg ob der Tauber in the Tauber Valley of the Castle District of Bavaria in Germany by a friend I met while studying in Australia. ... read more

Geo: 50.3118, 11.7712I was actually the only person in the room last night, and had trouble sleeping because it was eerily quiet. I need to start requesting rooms with Spanish senoritas in them so that they can sing me lullabies until I fall asleep. I'd gladly pay any price for such a service :)It absolutely POURED this morning - hopefully it keeps things cool for the rest of the day. I quickly forced down breakfast at the hostel and left for the train station, once there was a break in the rain. Rotherburg - the hostel is located in a neat building, a former horse mill. The receptionist told me that I was in the building "next door", but I had to go back for directions because I had almost wandered into somebody's house. Turns out ... read more
