Time to Leave the Ranch Somewhere I got confused! Put the wrong date on the last entry. But we’re back to August 24. This is the trip none of us is looking forward to. Sure, we’re all excited about getting to Greece - but it’s the “getting” there that is leaving us less than anxious to start the trip. Last night we packed up -- two huge canopies, equipment, moved benches and tables back where we found them, deconstructed the teepee David and Will put up on Thursday or Friday. Who can remember? And we packed our stuff, took showers and made arrangements to get an early breakfast. You remember -- bread, cheese lunch meat, butter, jelly, coffee and scrambled eggs. I think. Friday? I know we’re still in Germany but it’s hard to keep track on how many days we’ve been here and I’m too lazy to try and count backwards. Today was supposed to be the first day of a three-day pow wow. “Supposed to be” are the operative words. It rained. Hard. Thunder and lightning. The starting time was scheduled for 10:00 a.m. with Grand Entry at 12:00 p.m. The guys were getting dressed when it started to pour. And it rained all day long. We sat around and played cards. A public broadcasting crew came to do a live six minute feed about the pow wow and the Ranch. You just can’t imagine how many people it took to do this. We were to be on the road at 9:00 a.m. to head for the Wild West Ranch. Things happen, you know. There was press coverage on the internet of the pow wow. They showed a few seconds of Pumpkin Vyne and then the rest of the hobbiests. The teepees, the old timey outfits, the woman chopping wood outside the teepee (you know, that’s the way it is, at least per the German bible, “Dances with Wolves“). We are beginning to understand a little about the Indianner philosophy of Europeans. But we manage to rearrange the trailer and get everything inside. May 17th We finally made it to the German border and the famous Autobahn. Pete proved his manhood and reached speeds of over 200 kilometres per hour at one stage but progressed at an average speed of 160 k/p/m. Extreme Pete rocks!!!! We spent the night in Rorhenburg..a beautiful medieval walled city. 40 percent of the city was destroyed in WWII but has been restored to a charming village. It has many christmas shops one of which was like walking into a fairytale. Room after room of christmas trees and decorations and displays. Pete said I was like a kid in a candy shop. First taste of driving on the Autobahns, quite an experience to be travelling so slowly at 140k/hr. Some cars must have been moving at least 200k/hr. So as well as mastering driving on the right, added the extra skill of changing gears with the right hand. First stop was the city of Wurzburg, with it's magnificent Residenz Palace and Marienberg Fortress. The Palace was mainly destroyed during the later years of World War II, but faithfully restored, with most of the original fittings and furnishings saved. Now started on the Romantische Strasse (Romantic Road), lunch stop being Tauberbischofsheim, with it' s typical rural marketplace, Rathaus (townhall) and colourful half-timbered buildings.
