Hi all Well we made it home safely landing at around 5 am this morning. Had a little scare when a passenger fell ill and we were warned we might be quarantined but all went well. We met Pete's parents at the airport before they hopped on a plane headed for Denmark. Hope you all enjoyed our blogs as much as we enjoyed writing them. Thanks for your emails...we looked forward to reading them every day. We pondered how to end our story. Our European adventure exceeded our expectations. We cannot really pick a highlight so we decided to list our highlights in each country. First stop The Netherlands. Green, fresh, cold, windmills, canals, tulips, licorice (double salted), bikes, dykes, and most importantly wonderful relatives who made our stay so much fun! Second stop Paris. Metro, ... read more

The last 2 days of our European adventure have been as action-packed as the rest of the holiday. We spent a day doing some local Danish shopping and tasting Danish delights. We left Denmark after a teary farewell to the other Warren clan and headed for the ferry to Puttgarden. We arrived 1 hr early for our scheduled ferry trip and were ushered on to the ferry that happened to be boarding. Last car on. What luck! we would be half way to Franfurt by 3 pm and have a nice relaxing evening at a nice hotel. 2 kms after disembarking we hit heavy traffic. It takes us 1 hour to travel 10 kms thanks to an accident on the only bridge to the mainland. Ok no probs. We can make up time on the autobahn. Travelling ... read more

Hi all We arrived in Denmark yesterday crossing from Rostock in Germany to Gedsard in Denmark by car ferry. A 1 hr 45 min crossing. We are staying in Copenhagan with Pete's brother, Darren who works here and his wife Karen and kids Matthew and Alyssa. Darren and Karen took us into the city to the harbour. We saw The little mermaid....a statue on the shoreline in honour of Hans Christian Andersen. It is quite small and is frequently vandalised. It has been decapitated twice in the past and now the haed is filled with concrete. We walked to the royal palace and saw the changing of the guard at midday. I believe it is only a simple version of the British event at Buckingham Palace. After lunch we took a cruise along the canals and ... read more

Today we took a walking tour of Berlin. Almost 8 hrs all up from the time we left the hotel Ambassador till we walked back. Great informative tour. The tour guide covered themes of Prussian, Imperial,Nazi, Cold War and 21st century Berlin all in 4 hours. We saw what remains of the Berlin wall. We stood on the site of the bunker where Hitler killed himself. We visited Checkpoint Charlie. We saw many museums. We visited the Memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe. We walked beneath the Brandenburg gate across the Death strip in the Pariser Platz. we saw the famous window of the hotel from which Michael Jackson hung the baby. We visited the scene of the famous Nazi Bookburning. So much history...the good and the not-so-good. A very thought-provoking day and very educational. ... read more

May 17th We finally made it to the German border and the famous Autobahn. Pete proved his manhood and reached speeds of over 200 kilometres per hour at one stage but progressed at an average speed of 160 k/p/m. Extreme Pete rocks!!!! We spent the night in Rorhenburg..a beautiful medieval walled city. 40 percent of the city was destroyed in WWII but has been restored to a charming village. It has many christmas shops one of which was like walking into a fairytale. Room after room of christmas trees and decorations and displays. Pete said I was like a kid in a candy shop. We found a BnB to stay in...or rather it found us. There are so many places to choose from. We loved this town and would recommend it to anyone. May 18th we ... read more

The last 2 days in Switzerland flew by. We spent time at the flea market held once a year near where we are staying and managed to find a genuine antique goats bell and bargain the price down with help from Max. It will make its new home hanging from the tree next to our spa. We browsed through a huge local second-hand store and found a souvenier for someone at home... you'll have to wait and see. We walked through farmland to see the huge stork nests well known in this area. Green fields with beautiful wild flowers and new-born lambs line the path and the farmers sell their produce and set up cafes in the warmer weather. Max cooked us up a delicious cheese fondue for dinner and we put on 3 kilos. Pete ... read more

May 14th Took the train to the Alpes today. 3-4 hour trip each way. We travelled past a beautiful aqua lake called Walensee. Huge steep cliffs on one side and the rail line and typical Swiss villages on the other. Cows with bells around their necks scatter the fields. The train slowly ascends towards St Moritz to a height of 1775metres. We crossed the Landwasser Viaduct-a world famous cast-iron piece of Rhaetian railway. It is currently under repair so the train slows to a crawl over the viaduct that reaches 65 metres in height and 142 metres in length. The viaduct is listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site. We stopped at St Moritz for a quick bite. The town is dead this time of year but in winter it is the playground of the ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » North-East » Zürich May 13th 2009

Hi All Today we caught the train to Zurich. Train again is clean, quite and runs on time to the second - not something we see in Australia!! When we get to central everyone stands back and lets you get off before they calmly get on. The history of Zurich dates back over 1000 years and there are Roman relicts found throughout the old city area. We walked across old Roman baths that were located between more modern buildings. As you would expect from Switzerland they are big on clocks and Zurich boasts the largest clock in Europe located on one of its church towers. Speaking of towers, we climbed to the top of one of the spires - first and may be the last time we will do this on trip! There are a lot ... read more

Hi All Today Margret took us to Lucerne, a great little city about 1 and a bit hours away. It is located on Lake Lucerne, and as you would expect, has hundreds and hundreds years of history. We visited the lion monument that was carved in 1820-21 to commemorate Swiss guards who gave their lives trying to protect the French Royal family during the French Revolution - needless to say a number lost their lives. As I have said before, I am not a student of art, but the size and detail of the lion is amazing. Following this we went for a wander through the town and its many shops - managed to find and sample some great Swiss Chocolate. As usual with Swiss towns, it clean, tidy and organised - with history all around. ... read more

Hi All Margret took us to Mythen Mountains. Took a cable car to the to the top ski station for a hot chocolate. Spectacular view from both sides of the mountain. On to Einsiendeln to a Benendictine Abbey. He has been burn down and rebuilt several times over many hundreds of years. The interior of the Abbey in my opinion even more impressive than the Sacre Coeur in Paris. It was truely something to be seen. It is home to the Black Madonna where several hundred thousand pilgrims visit each year. We were one of about 50 in the Abbey at the time so it was very spiritual and peaceful. The Abbey is also renowned for its horse breeding - magnificent stables sit on the grounds. In the afternoon we walked around the lake at Rapperswil ... read more
