Early start for getting an 8:00 bus along the Romantic road to medieval Rothenburg. Again we disembarked at another port (an industrial dock nick-named “Stinky Port”). Skirting Würzburg, we drove through lots of small, neat towns and fields, eventually turning onto the Romantic Road – part of the 400 km total. Vistas of fields and trees unrolled along the gently curving road. In Rothenburg, we parked with many other tour buses just outside the old city walls. Eric was our guide again, so we heard lots more anecdotal history. This time about 60% of the city was saved from artillery barrages by an American officer who was aware of its history and a German officer who offered to and did retreat without firing. (40% was bombed the day before.) Walking along the cobbled road to the ... read more

Last night I got talking to a mother and daughter who were from Hamburg. We ended up playing Rumikue or whatever it is called. It is a games we use to play all the time as kids. The little girl Zoe kicked out asses three times in a row. I got the train at 8:31 this morning and exchanged train three times before getting to Rothenburg ob de tauber at 12:30. I started walking the direction I thought was the right way, I even asked a few locals and no one knew where this hostel was. Some one finally pointed me in the direction of the tourist office. (finally made it to an internet cafe - no connection at the castle. It's 2pm friday) So I’m writing this Fri a.m. as I sit in the nook of our castle room - I can’t get enough of this spot, as you'll see from the pic, best seat in the burg. J’s last day with the team was great. They gave him a warm send off with a team jersey signed by all the kids and “thanks for a great week”. He started with 29 kids and 1 pro, by the end of the week word was getting around and he had 46 total, 13 of them pros. So - they loved it. How he managed that many guys for a 1 hour workouts 2x/day is beyond me. The week was a success and now his ... read more

Well, now that the group trip is over, it is kind of tough to remember the first couple of days, especially the first day. It seems so long ago. But first, before I get into the specifics of day 1 of our group trip through Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, France, and Lichtenstein, let me just say that it was an amazing trip. I saw snow-covered mountains, beautiful lakes, castles, forests, and had some experiences and saw some places that I will never forget. First was breakfast. The cafeteria people had packed our breakfast the night before, so I was eager to see what they packed. It was rather interesting. A cheese sandwich, a ham sandwich, an apple, a Capri Sun pouch for juice, and…a Snickers bar. Now everything else I can understand, but a candy bar ... read more

Geo: 50.3118, 11.7712We are on the autobahn to Rothenburg, having left the hotel at 8:30. It's raining again, and I think I'm coming down with a cold. Ick.At our first rest stop (where, by the way, you can buy jewelry and a fine watch), I made sure to watch my toilet after waving my hand in front of the sensor to flush it. It's amazing. A mechanism comes out from the tank and hovers over the seat and bowl. It squirts cleaner into the bowl, while the seat spins around on top of the bowl to be cleaned by a sponge (or something) on the underside of this mechanism. It's pretty cool, and I don't mind paying the 50 or 70 eurocents to use a clean restroom at a rest stop that comprises various restaurants, coffee ... read more

On Tuesday, March 16th we arrived in Heidelberg, Germany. Arriving a little later than we had planned, time was limited but the highlight was visiting the Heidelberg Castle. Construction started before 1214, the long history of the castle and city deserving a book not a blog post. At night the view from the castle overlooking the city was absolutely amazing. Once checked in at the hotel most of us ran out to grab a bite to eat then returned to the hotel bar. It was a nice relaxing evening, drinking and trading stories with the bartender. Wednesday, March 17th we had a nice breakfast at the hotel restaurant then boarded the motor coach. We arrived in Stuttgart, Germany for our class program. The program was entitled “City for Children” and was put on by the City ... read more

Yesterday, I spent my day in Rothenburg. Rothenburg is famous for two things. Christmas decorations and Mideval everything! We began the trip with a freezing cold hike around the city but it was worth it. We got to see lot's of the lanscape and walked inside a mideval wall. At around noon, we were in the Marktplatz and saw the figurines pop out of the town clock at the Rathaus. Yay Glockenspiel! We went to St. Jakobs church but we didn't really get to see a whole lot. After touring the city, we went to a Pizzeria. I had one of the best ham pizzas in the world. The hot chocolate and apple strudel topped it off really well. In the middle of dessert I heard what sounded like a marching band coming down the street. ... read more

As you may recall from yesterday's journal, Carter lost his first tooth. Renee had explained about the tooth fairy and Carter was concerned that the fairy would come and steal his tooth! He didn't want to give it up, so Renee suggested that if he wrote a note and asked if he could keep it, then maybe the tooth fairy would leave it. Well, as you might guess, the note worked. Carter woke up and his tooth was still under his pillow, plus there was a five dollar bill (I guess the tooth fairy doesn't do euros) and there was a note from the Tooth Fairy. Carter opened it up and it said "Just this once!". As an added touch, there was shiny fairy dust on the note and on the pillow. Carter was very impressed, ... read more

We woke up on Day 6 and started the packing process as today we were due to take the train to Rothenburg. We went downstairs for our usual delicious breakfast, then finished the packing. Once again we were ready to move, with our huge backpacks on and pulling our rolling duffel bag. Renee was not interested in walking all the way back to train station (come on, it wasn't that far!). So we trundled over the walking bridge and into the main city until we found a Strassenbahn (trolley) stop. Just after we got there a trolley showed up, we were about to jump in, but I saw a big sign on the side that said "No entry without a valid ticket!". We stepped back and found the automated ticket machine and worked our way through ... read more

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is totally over the top about Christmas - but that makes it a great place to visit at Christmas time. I kind of imagine the locals must be something like the Who's in Whoville (from How The Grinch That Stole Christmas) who must plan for Christmas all year. When we visited Neuschwanstein and the Romantic Road in September, on a whim we drove home via Rothenburg ob der Tauber. It was so beautiful (a medieval walled city, almost 1000 years old) but being 5pm on a Sunday afternoon, nothing was open. We decided we would come back in December, assuming that like all good Bavarian towns there would be a cool christkindlmarkt (Christmas market). Turns out that was a bit of an understatement! We had booked into a hotel that was actually ... read more
