Geo: 49.0165, 12.1009We're up by 7 and Mom begins her grueling task of packing. It gets more difficult each day as her Christmas goodies look for a free ride back to the USA. Now she says she's going to leave some of the clothes that she packed for the poor people here in Germany. Ah, that's why we brought all this stuff. I take a few pictures around town now that the crowds are gone. When I return, we have a delicious free breakfast compliments of our hotel. I bring down one big bag down from the 3rd floor and the kid brings the other. The taxi takes us to the train station to catch the 10:06. to Regensberg, another three train event. The Main part of the city began in 12th & 13th centuries. Regensburg ... read more

Whew, what a day today! We toured Regensburg and passed through one of only two remaining Roman gates in Germany into the city. In 179 AD the Romans decided to build a fortress of stone where there was previously a Celtic Settlement on the bank of the Danube. Yep, 179 AD! History lesson (feel free to skip this part, but it's my favorite part, naturally!): "During the Middle Ages, the old Roman buildings were adapted to suit the needs of the growing city, which became the economic center of Bavaria. Strategically located at the crossroads of important trade routes, Regensburg played a major role in trading with eastern Central Europe and the Balkans, eventually developing contacts with Northern Italy, most notably Venice. Incredible wares passed through the docks on the riverbank and merchants traded, crafted, manufactured ... read more

Geo: 49.0165, 12.1009It was about a 15 minute walk from the ship along the river into the historic town of Regensburg. There has been a town here since Roman times but there is only a little evidence of a Roman gate. Most of the town is medieval and came to fame as it supplied salt to the surrounding areas. Salt was known as white gold as it was the only way of preserving fish and meat during the winter. The town also boasts a 900 year old stone bridge, which unfortunately was being restored when we visited so we only got a partial view. There are several rich merchant houses with towers- the higher the tower the richer the merchant. The tour ends up at the cathedral which has a huge organ inside- fortunately not playing! ... read more

We had originally planned to go to Munich today but Dieter suggested a new plan to visit a festival in a little town called Ransbach. This festival is a week- long festival to celebrate the church with traditional dances, food and drink. We thought that it would be fun to go to an authentic festival as Munich will always be there We packed up kids and followed Dieter in his car, taking a scenic route to the town; passing fields of golden yellows and greens with trees all around. We took a side road and then went over a bridge. The town is very small, located SW of Amberg, unfortunately I could not find any link to this city. A small road led up to the town, and parking was along the very rocky field of ... read more

Hi Guys and Gals Since we last spoke we were heading off to Vienna. So where do I begin. Vienna – We arrived around 5.30 o’clock. We went to the Liechtenstein Palace for a Viennese Concert that was a tribute the music of Strauss. Everyone got tarted up, I wore my suit and all the girls had there sparkly things on. The show had a bit of everything, Music, opera and some dancing which was well performed. Show went for 1 hour, then back to the ship for evening drinks and planning for the next day. We went on the Schonbrunn Palace tour which was good, had some free time there so Gaynor hit the Christmas markets in the forecourt and I went for a walk to get some more photos. Had a squirrel crawl up ... read more

Geo: 49.029, 12.0884A cold, grey day.Regensburg's AD 179 Roman city gate is still functional, as is the oldest operational stone bridge in Europe (completed in 1135). Pretty amazing when you consider this predates the stone bridge featured in Ken Follett's successor to his "Pillars of the Earth" novel, and it's such a substantial structure!I have learned that it is no longer correct to refer to the "Dark Ages". Historians have decided that it was unjust to call this period "Dark". The period from the end of the Roman Empire in the 5th© to about the 12th© Is now referred to as the Early Middle Ages, with the Middle Ages ending with the Renaissance.Mini-drama on board with a lady taken to hospital last night with gastro. After a fascinating tour, it wasn't long before I programmed the Navigation from my car and routed me from lngolstadt to Regensburg via the Altmuehtal Nature Park. For this segment I avoided the Autobahn since I was interested in seeing the winter beauty of the countryside and enjoying my driving vacation. I went through Kosching, Bettbrunn, Almanstein and Kelheim and ended up in Regensburg, my destination for that day. It was not the quickest route, but it gave me the chance to enjoy the view and tested my skill drive in winter. After several hours of driving, I arrived at the ornate and historic Maximilian Hotel which opened in 1891. After an excellent four-course dinner at the hotel, I retired for the night, eagerly looking forward to the next day's drive. The next morning I plotted ... read more
