It has been snowing gently all day today. Finally I get to use the gortex hiking boots, merino thermals, polar fleece parka and gortex jacket that we were obliged to equip ourselves with before bushwalking in Tasmania. On that occasion we actually wore short-sleeved T-shirts and took off our boots and paddled in the sea most of the time along the Bay of Fires! Today, however, I was glad of them all simultaneously. After class I set off on a different route, clomping carefully through the snow and ice, through the old town to the shopping mall near the station where the shops are said to be cheaper. Mostly I bought stationery to try and organise my studying. I also tried to buy some kiwi fruit from Italy in a huge food barn. But it appeared ... read more

Sunday morning after a wake up a call I took the Paddington -Heathrow express back to catch my flight to Munich. From there there was a connecting bus to a station called Fleising and the local train about 1 hour to Regensburg. The entire carrige was rather entertained by the conversations of four American servicemen returning to their local base from a weekend's snowboarding in Austria. They have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since this trip has been rather hectic in its preparation up to now, it was only on the train that I realised that I had not printed out my instructions for finding the language school. I knew it was in the old city near the famous bridge across the Danube and the cathedral. So, with my pathetic German and aided by a kind ... read more

Regensburg Regensburg is a perfectly preserved medieval city right on the banks of the Danube River dominated by the spires of its impressive cathedral. The charm of Regensburg lies in its narrow alleys and quaint squares and little shops. You need to take the time to explore the tiny alley ways or you could miss a fabulous shop. I love the pastel coloured facades, and there were still some window boxes with flowers blooming. It was a drizzly day but that didn't stop us from enjoying the beautiful city of 150,000. The dining room on board the Amadolce celebrated the local Bavarian food. We enjoyed sausage, saurkraut, German beer and wine, suckling pig, ham, potato salad, spatzle, cakes, cakes and more cakes. I'm sure I missed something but left whistling “Roll out the Barrel”...... ... read more

Trip: 4 Regensburg Day 1 Frank had to travel to Bavaria for work for 21/2 weeks. Since I am not working yet I decided to visit him on the weekends. We were lucky enough to find a hotel in great town called Regensburg. Regensburg is a beautiful town that has historical sights dating all the way back to 1000 years ago. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some people we met here claimed even farther back but it hasn't been scientifically proven YET. We stayed at the Marriott Courtyard hotel in Regensburg. It is a little farther out from the old town center but easily within walking distance. Regensburg has walking trails everywhere so it was very easy to walk anywhere you wanted to go. The first day I ventured into the old part ... read more

Let's see -- We have been in the Munich area for 4 days so far... We met our friend Joe at the airport and had dinner with him in Moosberg. A small town just north of the airport but might as well be a different planet, it is rural and has a great cobblestone street atmosphere. The next day we did OKTOBERFEST!!! It is the 200th anniversary. Liters of good German beer, sausages, radiches, sauerkraut, and of course a pretzel. Will we, in America, ever learn to make a good pretzel roll? We went back to Moosberg met some of Joe's family friends from California for dinner. Gunther and Sita are from Germany and come back here at least every other year. It was fun to have someone that speaks fluent German help us with the ... read more

This was our Bavarian day. Our later start to the morning consisted of a breakfast of tea, fruit and toast for me, because our lunch was at 11:45: white sausages, honey mustard (very sweet), and excellent sauerkraut. The keyboard player gave us “umpapa” music; some of the staff wore Bavarian dress (real thing – they don’t approve of fake Bavarian costumes); and, the tables were decorated with serviettes and balloons in the Bavarian colours – blue and white checks. We walked off the ship to meet our local guides – ours never introduced himself, but he was enthusiastic, striding along (tall and thin), talking all the time. I couldn’t keep up with pictures and notes, but I tried. The history of middle Europe is so complicated, with wars and lords and borders! The buildings continue to ... read more

Regensburg Regensburg is on the Danube. The boat could not go under the Steinerne bridge so it had to go around it in a canal and reverse into the river berth. The bridge is now only for pedestrians and cyclists. It is said that the bridge builder promised Satan the first 3 souls to cross the bridge if the bridge was finished before the church. The bridge was finished first but the builder shooed a dog, a cock and a hen across first. Satan was furious and punched the bridge upwards in the middle to break it, but failed, resulting in the raised centre. Knights of the 2nd and 3rd Crusade crossed this bridge on the way to the Holy Land. Our guided walk took us past the historic old sausage shop (Wurstkuchl) that was built ... read more

Well here I am in my very own Bayerische Groundhog Day adventure, for the third time in Regensburg ostensibly learning to speak German. Füssball fever has really hit the town with the Weltmeisterschaft only a few days away, and the black, gold and red German flags are springing up everywhere, hanging from windows or adorning cars and even bicycles and perambulators. However the big question on everybody's lips is 'ob Deutschland gewinnen wird' - whether Germany will win... The Regensburgers are curiously apprehensively confident about Germany's chances, a little doubtful initially, but then exuding an unwavering certainty that the team will do well. When they quickly discover you are an Auslander - usually as soon as you say something to them - they anxiously ask your opinion, and then look most downcast if you say you ... read more

From Prague we caught the train to Regensburg. It was a nice trip through pretty countryside. We had planned on going to Munich but had to delay this for a couple of days because there was a trade fair on and accommodation was out of our price range. We arrived in Regensburg late so didn’t get to see any of the town straight away. The next morning we went on a day trip to Nurnburg. We had perfect weather, probably the hottest day we’ve had on our trip! Nurnburg is surrounded by a restored medieval Alstadt (old town surrounded by a wall). The old town with it’s squares, cathedrals and rivers/canals is really pretty. We went into a couple of cathedrals - definitely the coolest places to be on a hot day! We had a ... read more
