I feel a need to give an update on the politeness of Germans. Many are still not polite. At all. Many grocery store cashiers are still rude. And many salespeople in stores size you up when you come into the store, and then (if they don't think you're worthy, as I suppose they think about me) look at you as if to say, "What are YOU doing here? Don't bother me." BUT there is hope. In the past few months, people have helped me lift Kaan's stroller onto the tram, they've asked me if I want to go ahead of them in line because I have a baby and only one thing to buy, and they have offered Kaan cookies in bakeries because he smiled at them. In one store, Kaan was just being his cheerful ... read more

I got up early early to catch my 6am train to Munich, the italian name for it is Monaco just to keep you on your toes early in the morning. i had a ciccilian family in my carriage today and they were very friendly and invited me to stay with them if i make it down that way. The scenery through the mountains from italy to Germany is stunning, some of the bridges and roads they have constructed are quite amazing, just hanging off cliff edges etc. Now prior to leaving Nice i had checked for accomodation and there were plenty of places, so for the first time i was arriving somewhere with no place to stay. We got into the train station late i headed to an internet cafe to find a place and sure ... read more

hey everybody, didnt really get to tel you guys much about amsterdam... we took a tour into a smal village called volendam, where we went to a clog making factory as well as a cheese factory. was relatively interesting, but our tour guide was a bit nuts. one of the highlights was finally buying some clothes from a store called H&M spending our final day in munich.. to be honest, we're not all that impressed with the city, its actually a bit of a hole compared to the likes of london and paris.... also a very poor sense of style overall. the only worthwhile thing we did was going on a tour to neuschwanstein castle, built by eccentric (sometimes called mad) King Ludwig II. its located among the stunningly beautiful bavarian alps, and we definately got ... read more

We are on our final lap on our way back to Munich. Will be in the RV this weekend and then in a hotel the last 2 nights before heading home. The weather has taken a dramatic change. The heat wave is over and in fact the temperature has dropped by about 20 degrees so feels very cold after all the heat. Is also raining and forecast is the same for next several days. Was raining when we came and appears it will do so when we leave. Had a good time in the northern area. As we have done several times during the trip we changed our plan. We left Berlin headed for Lubeck via Rostock, but decided it would be too much driving for time left so we turn a turn west and went ... read more

Ok.. so a few notes about my last email.. even I had a pretty good laugh reading it.. don´t hold it against me.. k.. Also, I was off by a day.. My birthday was Day 69.. also officially my half way point (wasnt planned this way, just happened).. Day 70: Monday, July 31: Vienna Markus and I slept in and enjoyed the incredible facilities at our wonderful hotel room. We first headed off to the Fine ARts and Natural History museums.. We didn´t visit them, but the square was very pretty. We headed off to the Parlament Building and then the Rathaus (City Hall) where they are having a summer long outdoor film festival. After this, it was lunch time, we headed into a restaurant famous for their Wienershnitzels, so big that it was bigger than ... read more

Munich was an odd city. I found out that lots of "German" things- lederhosen, pretzels, weisswurst, etc., are actually Bavarian, which is conservative and talks different, so it is basically the it is like the American south. Except its in Germany. Munich was much more beautiful than Berlin, much more compact and less hectic. However, I couldn't shake the odd feeling I got when our great tour guide, Ozzie, "the only Black man in Munich," told us that although Munich has done a great job rebuilding from world war II, it has completely whitewashed its involvement. I learned a lot, we walked the same route that Hitler and 2,000 Nazis did in the Beer Hall Putsch of 1923 I think, which ended in a failure and during the jail term Hitler wrote Mein Kampf. It was ... read more

Guten tag! Right now we are in Füssen, which is about a two hour train ride from Münich. We came here to see the famous Neuschwanstein castle, but we are putting it off because it is really cold and rainy at the moment. We didn´t get a chance to finish writing about our time in Paris so that´s where we will begin... Afer the Opera house, (last Tuesday) we went to the Musee d´Orsay, which was amazing. We were told to go directly to the top floor, because that´s where all of the impressionistic paintings are, such as works by Van Gogh, Monet, Manet, Renoir and Seurat. I (Diana) loved it so much that I went back again on Thursday. I could stare at one painting for an hour. I love being in art galleries. They ... read more

We left off telling you about our glorious train ride from Paris to Münich. Aside from the complete privacy, comfort and space, we even had the opportunity to sit in the restaurant and share breakfast at the same time, for the waiter would not allow us to eat one after the other, which we were planning on doing because of our luggage. I (Diana) sat down to order for both of us and explained the situation. He immediately went to ask for permission to lock our room, which we were not even supposed to be in, and then insisted on going to get Lindsey so we could dine together. This was Part Two of what we will forever refer to as "Friday: The Day of Kindness." During the seven hour train ride, we fell asleep and ... read more

It all goes so quickly. One minute you're in Mainz lolly-gagging around and the next it's 7 days later in München. We had a heck of a time in Paris. From checking in to our ghetto hostel to marching the Champs-Eyleeses to getting drunk off 5 euro bottles of wine (that were better then the 50 dollar bottles in the US) on the lawn in front of the Eiffel tower to hiking Montmartre to drinking more wine in from of the Eiffel tower, we had our hands full. Everyone in Paris was much more friendly than we expected. All in all it was a great experience. James 'the count' and I headed back Sunday morning for 12 hours of train rides back to Innsbruck while Corissimo and Pagmina stayed late to watch the tour de france ... read more

Looking for home We owned our house in the US. It was a cute little red house with a barn/garage out back. It was around 1300 square feet, and was just perfect for us. It had two living rooms (one of which we used as an office) and three little bedrooms. It was built in the 1950s and had appliances to match. It was home. When we decided to move to Germany, Levent's employer provided us with a relocation agent to help us out. We had no idea how necessary that was. Without knowing German and without understanding the - I must be honest, very strange- system here, we would likely be living in a hotel. Limited selection There is not a whole lot for rent here in Munich. Pretty much anywhere in the States, you ... read more
