Wow. I've had a couple of amazing weekends, and the week between was pretty incredible too. Weekend before last Me, Nick, the Rutgers crew(Frank, Rob, Cait), Bec and John went down to Killarney to see what we could see. It was probably some of the most fun i've had in Ireland as of yet. The town is a gorgeous little hamlet nestled between the views of the ring of Kerry, a 100+ mile circle of beautiful little towns in some of the most beautiful parts of ireland, to the west and a spectacular national park to the southeast. After a hefty train ride, it was really a treat to have such views readily available on our disembarking, as well as the charm of a small town. I will admit that after an extended period, even Dublin ... read more

We drove down to Ingolstadt and rented a hotel room there because they were a lot cheaper than staying in Munich even at a hostle. We cheked in there around noon and then got on the train to Munich. When we got off the train we simply followed the people in leiderhosen (I have no idea how you spell that). Once we were there we found the beer gardens but we couldn't figure out how to get beer. There was no way we were getting inside them because aparently Germans start drinking at 8:30am! There was no room outside at the tables either. Finally we asked a German girl if she spoke english and she did. She told us to just grab a waiter or waitress and tell them how many beers we wanted. Once we ... read more

What European holiday would be complete without visiting the biggest beer festival in the world? So we decided to make a day trip to Oktoberfest. Germany had a 4-day long weekend, and it felt like every German was there. Shoulder to shoulder mayhem. What was really cool is that the locals all get into the spirit and wear traditional dress. Hit the beer halls early at 10am and managed to nab a seat, which was lucky. Great festive atmosphere with people happily downing 1 litre steins, and every so often dancing on the benches and tables to the live band. Lined my stomach with some wursts and even then could only manage 2 steins. No hangover as they don't use any preservatives. Mini didn't drink at all; she was more than happy to take photos. After ... read more

So, we hopped on a train to Munich, not knowing what to expect, and braved not only the city itself, but its most famous and infamous institution: Oktoberfest. There is really not much to say, I think, except Oktoberfest can be fun, we didn't get robbed, and we escaped OK, and people in Austria hate Oktoberfest and find it a disgusting idea. I am of the personal opinion that the largest beer party in the world must have some merits. Agree to disagree. While there we saw a few interesting things: a man who sat with us and told us he is "not a nationalist at all, but when it comes to beer he is," who claimed to have had twelve beers at Oktoberfest one year. (I believe it). A Sixteen year old's first Oktoberfest, at ... read more

Still hanging in there in Germany. Not too much has been going on, a lot of teaching preparation, and figuring out TWS stuff. I am going to do my unit in Math over Number Sense. So it shouldn’t be too bad. I hope. We have hung around H-berg lately, and are working on planning other trips. We went on a Volksmarch a few weekends ago, and it is an organized hike up the hills and around the city. AO and I went with two of the upper elementary teachers from my school and we had a good time. We walked the 11 K and got a cheap beer stein out of it so it was fun. We’ve been downtown a bit, hanging out at cool places and checking things out. This week we went with my ... read more

For the last weekend of September Alison and I headed off with four of my old work mates for the most unlikely event I'd ever imagine I would voluntarily attend - Oktoberfest. And I loved every minute of it. We stayed in a tiny picturesque town in the Bavarian Alps called Bayrischzell. Set against a backdrop of lush green hills, and lined with gingerbread style houses with window ledges filled with flowers, it was like being in a fairytale - particularly when we stumbled across a group of brightly decorated cows being paraded along the road by cow herds dressed in traditional Bavarian costume. We were lucky to have Meredith and Robert with us as they acted as our interpreters and local guides - taking us to the most beautiful lakes and hills and the best ... read more

It was now time to make a move and head on over to Stuttgart for a welcome recovery with my family. But before I left Munich I still had one more drinking task ahead, the AFL Grand Final at 6.30am in the morning! Go the Coast!... read more

We meet up with Julie and her boyfriend Mat at PHV and start out toward München at 0730. The temperature is in the low to mid 60s F, the air is foggy, and the ground is wet. Half way there we stop at a Burger King for snacks and a bathroom break, but everything tasted awful (burnt onion rings and a powdery milk shake), so we had a rough start to our day. Lack of caffeine turned out to be my problem. A little Nescafe chocolate coffee greatly improved my morning. Anyway, we arrive in Munich, but way of an unsuccessful detour to find the Esso station on the outskirts of the city, about noon. Then we spend awhile driving in and out of the city limits, up and down many streets, through the suburbs and ... read more
