After logging in yesterday, I went down to finish up laundry and get Bradley, but the door was locked. Somehow, I talked the staff into letting me into the service elevator (the bottom floor was supposed to be locked for the rest of the afternoon with no admittance for cleaning), and wandered aroiund the cavernous basement to find the bro. We gathered our belongings and set out for a monestary outside of town I had read about (supposed to have the best beer in all of Bavaria.... which says quite alot). It turned out to be alot more out of the way that I thought. Tucked neatly within a sidestreet, we stepped within the Hofbrauhaus and were instantly overwhelmed: a cavernous series of rooms filled to the brim with tables and benches and germans and tourists; a confusing szstem wherebz certain tables are reserved for local regulars and theres no telling where and how to sit down; the promise of beer too good to allow ourselves to be driven to an easier place. A table cleared and we grabbed it - just the two of us on benches meant for 10 or more. We ordered our drinks (onlz available in HUGE liter mugs), a helles and a dunkel. Kaley, Carla (The girl we met in Venice who is from L.A.) and I took the night train from Venice to Munich so we arrived in Munich very early which actually worked out perfectly because we got to the hostel and realized that since it was also carnival in Munich that most touristy things would be closed the next day. Since we really wanted to see Neuschwanstein (the gorgeous castle that inspired Disney’s Cinderella castle) we had to go the day we arrived so we just dropped our bags off and headed for the train. Again, we saved some money on this excursion because in Bavaria they have a thing called a Bavarian Pass where up to 5 people can ride the train to anywhere in Bavaria and back for only 29 euros. Day 19 Sunday 4th February 2007 A very early morning as we were going via Mauthausen and Mondsee on our way to Munich, Germany. Mauthausen was one of the worst concentration camps during WW2. Adolf Hitler was born in Austria, his father was in the military and Adolf was to follow in his fathers footsteps. His father died when he was 14 and his mother died when he was 18. His mother was under the care of a Jewish Doctor and some believe this is where his hatred of the Jewish race started. Hitler believed the Germans were the best race and deserved the best.
