City of Lions
Rub them once, twice and thrice but never more! I got up early early to catch my 6am train to Munich, the italian name for it is Monaco just to keep you on your toes early in the morning. i had a ciccilian family in my carriage today and they were very friendly and invited me to stay with them if i make it down that way.
The scenery through the mountains from italy to Germany is stunning, some of the bridges and roads they have constructed are quite amazing, just hanging off cliff edges etc. Now prior to leaving Nice i had checked for accomodation and there were plenty of places, so for the first time i was arriving somewhere with no place to stay. We got into the train station late i headed to an internet cafe to find a place and sure enough nothing had vacancies that night, surprisingly i didnt really care and was thinking about a night in the trainstation when i found a flyer for a place called The Tent a little bit out from the city centre near the Botanisch Gartens, called them up and they had plenty of beds.
But when i got there i found it was actually two
giant marquees and you could save yourself a few euros and sleep on a bedroll with blankets on the floor in one of them. Perfect. The place was actually really cool and has been around for ages apparently, good facilities, with kitchen and restaurant type dealy and you could camp there too if so inclined. The restaurant was great, you could eat well there for less than 10 euro a day for 3 meals, everything was basically at cost so it was perfect, and they sold cheap beer!
i met a group of irish girls to hang out with that night, Fionnghaile (Fanilla), Jane, Emily, Clare and Connie, we had a few drinks and they thought it would a good idea to introduce me to the game “slaps” to start the game you clap out:
“Whats the name of the game, slaps!
Whats the object? Get fu*ked!”
I think you can see where this is going!
The previous loser starts off touching their shoulder for direction and counting “one”
the next person in that direction counts “two” and touches a shoulder for the next direction.
On “seven” that person must put one hand above the other and the
top hand sets the direction and on “ten” that person must point at someone else and they have to drink for 10 seconds. But if anyone makes a mistake along the way they must drink for as many seconds as the number you were up to.
Very simple but still easy to make a mistake and you know the object of the game? Yeah so that was a fun night! We were all a little worse for wear the next day and the weather was miserable, it was actually cold and raining. This was the first real rain and bad weather i had seen all trip. i took this opportunity to reach the final world in the New Super Mario Brothers (yes!) do some washing and catch up on my diary. That afternoon i met a crazy Canadian girl Tori, she is tiny and we discussed making some sort of turtle based backpack that she folded out into a small tent too so she could live in it. i still think the idea is worth pursuing so dont get any ideas, patent pending, patent pending, patent pending!
That night i discovered why floor sleeping space is cheap, it
was really cold, hard and uncomfortable, i didnt sleep well and decided for an extra few euro a bed in the other tent was probably not a bad idea!
So me and Tori decided just to wander the next day, which i definately think is the best way to spend your first day in a new city. it was still cold but not raining at least, i was starting to think perhaps my european summer had finally come to an end :/ Munich city is pretty cool, very clean and almost has a sterile feel to it though there is plenty to see and do here.
Jim was coming to visit me in Munich for a pre-birthday party weekend so on Saturday we met and went for a few beers and a good chat at a beer garden in the city before heading to do a cycling tour of the city (after a few wursts) The tour we did was with Mikes Bikes and i can highly recommend it. They give you a bit of the history of the city along the way and you can cover quite a lot of distance pretty quickly and easily (no hills!)
allowing you to see all the sites. Having a few drinks beforehand probably helps to have a good time, i felt like a kid again on the bike doing skids along the way and being a general larikin with Jim. We got to see the river where there is a standing wave that people surf on and all the historical sites, including a stop at a huge beer garden for a stein and some food. We “aquired” a mug here as a souvenier before heading back and being invited by the aussie guide Justin to a bar to watch the Aussie vs South African tri-nations match with them. We had more drinks, talked alot and went to another bar for more of the same before calling it a (very late) night.
The next morning was a bit stressful Tori was really not well so i hung around to help her get her stuff ready and call an uncle that lived close by to take her to a doctors. i needed an afternoon nap and watched some seinfeld on my mp3 players before having an early catch up nights sleep. My week in Munich was up and i had to
ship out the next day to Berlin.
