Our first night in Munich was really just a night. We met a girl from the states on the street and decided to have dinner together in an Italian restaraunt right across the street from the hostel. Hey it was convenient. The next day was spent on a free walking tour. Three hours of walking and fun facts about the city. The best part was our doggie mascot that walked with us the whole way. The tour guide walks her dog during these tours. And in a Bavarian theme, we ended the tour in the beer garden. Good cold bavarian beer and pretzels. A little siesta came afterwards. And then it was off to the English Gardens for a little surfing entertainment. People actually wear their wetsuits and surf in a certain part of the river ... read more

This blog entry is not about traveling to fancy cities or resorts in planes and trains. It's about another kind of travel: immigration. My husband and I are immigrants here in Germany, and we are here legally. When my husband was an immigrant to the United States, he was there legally. A little paper stuck into our passports gives us the right to live here, and in my husband's case, to work here. But not everyone here, and not everyone in the US, has that little paper in their passport - in fact, they don't even all have passports. Given that "Illegal immigration" is a topic frequently discussed in the media, and thus in society, these days, I thought I'd write about my personal view. Yes, it's political, but this is my blog and my place ... read more

I never knew Munich was so high-class. It´s like Florence in that every high end store yuo´ve ever heard of has a store here. Like Cartier, Tiffany, Gucci (all the designers really) etc. etc. E & I feel a little tacky in our well-worn travel clothes. After 7 1/2 weeks the backpack is getting a little gamey. We´re still shopping though, though not buying much..I don´t want anything more to carry!! We had to buy an additional roll bag in Italy just to carry all the stuff we´ve accumulated. This is another city that has been extensively rebuilt after WWII, but unlike others they put it back the way it was exactly. They have NOT forgoten the war here, every church or historical structure I went into today had pictures up of what it looked like ... read more

well, we came, we saw, i drank beer. silly me, last night i ordered a large beer when we went out, don´t worry i have pics, it was, yeah a huge beer, gigantic. but, i finished it, even if i did need to stop in the middle and eat some nachos so i would have something in my stomach. we only have 3 days left of sightseeing, before the long trip home, and i can only imagine how woozy i am gonna feel when we get there. jetlag was killer when we got here weeks ago. funny it doesn´t feel like i´ve been away for 7 weeks, and somehow it does. well, not too much more to say, we got to parid tonight on the night train, but of course, no sleepers, which is rough, that ... read more

I've been in Munich for 4 days now, its a kind of large city, with the biggest city park in europe. Where people surf in the river. We went to a concentration camp the other day, it was quite a depressing but interesting experience, we saw gas chambers which the nazis tricked the prisoners into believing were showers so as to make killing them easier. There were Huge crematoriums and the whole place was generally depressing... over 30,000 people were killed here during the nazi era! Munich is a place were everyone drinks beer, in huge amounts.. I went to Hofbrauhaus, which is a famous beer hall and one where Hitler frequently had National socialist meetings etc The hostel is nice, extremely hot in the dorm. I've met some awes*me people and Im having dandy fun... ... read more

Munich was always going to be our major comfort stop on our trip, as we were going to be staying with our great friend Vicki from back home in Australia. Vicki bravely moved from Sydney to Munich 6 months ago for a 18 month stint for work. One of the funniest and most frustrating parts of our trip happened before we even got to her house after the half day drive from Lucerne. We had an address but no real directions to get to her house, and our maps are really designed to get you from A to B and seeing the major sights in the cities, not finding a specific house on a small street just outside the city centre. Anyway, after a couple of texts, calls and a few u-turns we discovered the problem ... read more

We left Venice this morning at 5:15AM and arrived in Munich at 9AM. We dropped our bags at the Creatif Elephant Hotel (interesting name for an interesting place...) and then headed right to Neuschwanstein Castle. We were expecting there to be a lot of crowds, but there actuallz ended up being hardlz anzone there. I posted a picture of the bridge overlooking the castle just to prove the lack of people for anzone who cares... Anzwazs, we didn´t tour Neuschwanstein, but we did tour Hohenschwangau, which is the original castle of the familz (Ludwig´s parents). It ... read more

When we got to munich the hostel was right across from the train station, and we arrived just in time to watch the end of the world cup game. The bar in the hostel was hopping, and beer was cheap and flowing. I took some pics too of peoples reactions. The party in the streets was intense too, with people going crazy and waving flags, honking, no flashing though. Renata wanted boobies. We met a young couple from Minnesota in our room, and also some people from South Korea. In the lobby we found a brochure for the New Munich walking tours. Free Tour? I'm in! We decided to go on the tour the next day, since it was stopping by right in the lobby. Next morning we took the tour, which was actually really awesome. ... read more
