I arrived in Paris late in the day and jumped into onto the metro down to the Eiffel Tower where the hostel I was staying in. I checked in, planned what I was going to do tomorrow. 27th Feb I arrived early at Notre Dame and had to join the queue that had all ready started to form. When we got inside we climbed up the narrow stairwells up to the top of the cathedral. Eventually, breathless we reached the top with views of across Paris. I found on top my long lost cousins (one of the gargoyles) and had a picture with him before returning down to the ground. For most of the day just wondered around soaking up the atmosphere, not really going any where. My next stop was the Arc Du Triomphe, I ... read more

After a few days of war stuff at Normandy it was time for a change of scenery, time to stop and smell the roses. So we headed for Giverny, home of Claude Monet´s house and garden made famous in his "Water-lillies" series of paintings. The house was a little disappointing as there was none of Monet's artwork, just his collection of other artists works, but the garden was every bit as pretty as his paintings and we took lots and lots of photos. It is easy to see where he got his inspiration from and why he loved this place so much. It must be even better in Spring when all of the flowers would be at their best. ("I'm not sure what all of the fuss is about - it's just a garden of flowers" ... read more

Well after a couple of days fighting either cold or flu symptoms I finally managed to get on my way down to the ferry at Portsmouth to make the crossing to Le Havre and the start of my holiday to France, Germany and Austria. I took my usual route down to Portsmouth avoiding any motorways and allowing more time for stop, the run was quite pleasant and uneventful although it was damp conditions but with only occasional bits with heavy spray. I arrived at Portsmouth with 1 ½ hours to spare which gave me time to chill out and have a drink and pick up an electrical adaptor before boarding the ferry for the crossing to Le Havre. Once off the ferry and heading out of the port, I was amazed at the queue of trucks ... read more

This Autumn we fulfilled one of our dream holidays by visiting Frances’ southern wine growing region of Bordeaux…during the Rugby World Cup! Australia vs Canada was the game we were to see but we thought whilst there, why not see the sights and taste test the produce? On our first evening in Bordeaux we found ourselves wandering the streets gazing at the historic buildings, narrow laneways and grand churches in search of the perfect first meal in France. We found it at an outdoor restaurant looking onto one of the numerous atmospheric squares (place de something-or-other!) in Bordeaux after checking out a local wine bar. The cliché of good French food is one stereotype that we’re pleased to report is actually true, unlike the reputation of all French people being rude and unwilling to communicate in ... read more

I met a young French couple (24 years old) yesterday just by leaving the door open in my auberge (hostel) while I was in the room. I had been out walking all day since we can’t be in the hostel between 10 and 4 anyway, so by the evening I was sort of burnt out on walking around alone. Since I didn’t really have anything else to do, I was just going to read some and try to go to bed (it was somewhere between 9 and 10 at that point). However, the couple stopped by and wondered if I wanted to join them for a walk and a drink somewhere. And I did. And it was great. We talked a lot about cultural differences, and how we thought each culture became what it is today. ... read more

Let me just clear something up for all of you who think that you can become fluent in a language from hardcore studying in school. You may get damn good at the language itself, but you cannot become well-versed in culture, which you need to call yourself anywhere close to fluent in a language. What brought this one? “Si vous voulez bien patienter quelques instants…” Literally: “If you’d be willing to wait a moment…” That, however, is not an accurate translation. I waited two hours and fifteen minutes, not a moment, to see the director of La Résidence Bethany, a sort of dormlike residency for les jeunes travailleurs de Lille (young working people in Lille), with zero apologies. And that’s normal. Waiting “just a moment” in France can mean a moment, but it can easily mean ... read more

First things first...Ed is famous :) Remember the photos in the first blog. They have been around. Not only have random people received them via mail, no, they have also been published by the Sun, haha. I am not sure if this is good or bad news though. Anyhow, on to the Paris adventure. Day 1: Picked up rental car, shitty Opel Meriva 1.4. If you're ever been offered this car....run!!! It's a piece of crap. It eats petrol like a big one and is so slow, it's unreal. Payed €25 toll to Paris. Checked into hotel and Ed gets wallet stolen. Wallet turns up but minus €150 :( Bad start but it's getting better, right? Yeah! The hotel is nice, it's a stone throw away from the Moulin Rouge and the room is ok-ish. Sure ... read more

Arrived in Paris 2 days ago. We spent the first day exploring the surrounding streets where we are staying and the headed over to the Eiffel Tower. The views are amazing from the top floor!! Unfortunately it was raining and there was heavy winds. It also rained the second day so we went shopping. The shopping complex was huge and there was also an area for outlet shopping. ... read more

Montpellier. The Wobblies are based there and so too did we for 2 nights either side of the game against Fiji. The win was solid but exposed a few deficiencies. The highlight was Montpellier itself. A biggish city with real charm and the most psychodellic of trams. We also caught up with our mate Rod who was over with a few of his Londoner comprades. All nine of us had a wonderful night out after the match in a restaurant tucked into the corner of a quaint plaza somewhere in the back streets of Montpellier. The food in the restaurant was another story. In my experience, a menu's BBQ plate would indicate the kransky would at least be waved enticingly close to something hot before being placed on a plate and served to a customer. The ... read more
