We took the TGV train from Lyon to Paris which like the Eurostar trains in Italy you could tell was going really fast! Our train was non stop between Lyon and Paris so it was a very quick trip of around only 2 hours. We arrived into Paris Gare de Lyon which is one of a number of terminus stations in Paris. (There are different terminus stations depending on which direction you want to travel to from Paris.) Like we did in Amsterdam, we were able to buy a 3 day travel pass in Paris which gave us unlimited travel in the 3 inner zones for 3 days. Accommodation within the inner area of Paris was quite expensive so we ended up booking another ETAP hotel (similar to what we stayed in at Avignon) which was ... read more

Monday 17th September Up at 8.30 and over to Mum's by 10.30, we caught the Metro out to Mont Martre, the highest point of the city and the nearest stop to the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. Not content with merely walking up the steps to get to the top, we decided to do it in style and hop in the funicular (which is like a elevator on tracks that goes up on a 45° angle). As it was overloaded with Korean tourists, instead of letting everyone get out at the top, the doors opened for about 5 seconds before closing again and the funicular started the descent back down to the bottom. The people in queue at the bottom were keen to jump in when the doors opened up but none of us were getting out. So, back ... read more

And I've certainly been doing plenty of that! Here are the hilights from my trek all over Versailles and Paris this weekend! Saturday and Sunday, I was mostly on my own in Versailles, because the de la Bigne’s had a family wedding in Normandie. Before they left, I got to see Thomas and Georges, two of my “French brothers”. Thomas is absolutely hilarious. When Chrystel admitted that she was the only member of the family who didn’t like “bandes desinees” (comic strips), Thomas scowled and told me “it’s a real social handicap, you know”. Apparently there’s a French television program with puppets that satirizes just about everything both at home and abroad, and Thomas told me that the United States is represented by a puppet of Sylvester Stallone, quelle horreur! So after everyone left on Saturday, ... read more

Hello everyone, Well we are back in London hoping to see the Queen this time. Her Royal Standard was flying as we dropped by but she didn't have her teapot on so we were refused entry for tea... may be next time. At least the Canadian Embassy let us in to send this message for free. Oh to be a Canadian! We have had quite a busy few days since we left the south of France. We headed north to Paris on Monday and stopped in Lyon to break up the long train trip. Lyon is a very nice city that sits between the Rhone and the Saoune and has a nice pedestrian walking area through the old town. We had a nice dinner in Bellecour and had seafood salad (yes, Katy ate the whole thing)... ... read more

Hello Everyone, It's Monday morning here in Nantes, and I have lots to tell! Last week went fairly well; classes began and all. I went to every class that I thought seemed interesting, except a few classes at the university which don't start until today. Now this week I'll be narrowing it down to just 5 classes. As of right now, I'm taking a french grammar class, Contemporary French Society, Traduction, French Writers and Foreign Nations, Art History, and Litterature d'Enfance. French grammar is...french grammar, and the professor is pretty intense but I'll be learning a lot. Contemporary French Society will be difficult (there's a 12 page SINGLE SPACED paper due in December!) but hopefully interesting. It's for my sociology major at home. Traduction is a class at the university with other french students (it starts ... read more

Sod's Law: You spend two painfully boring weeks in smelly Delhi applying for visas for the Stans......and then poor Jom gets sick in our first port of call - Tashkent, Uzbekistan - and we have to fly home to sunny Scotland within a week of leaving India! The vagaries of travel in exotic climes eh? Still, when your heart is only beating a paltry 38 times a minute and the local Doc is adamant you fly home asap to see a cardiologist, you tend to follow orders.....looking on the bright side, Tashkent is home to possibly the best Syrian restaurant east of Damascus so at least we could gorge ourselves on top quality grub in between hospital visits. The silk road, the Pamirs and Iran will have to wait til another time but no doubt we'll ... read more

Wepler Wepler 14, place de Clichy - 01 45 22 53 24 This Bistro is best known for seafood and oysters in an area that is swimming with such places. It is large and looks just like you would think a Parisian bistro would, with chairs and tables lining the sidewalk in front. There is a small stall in front where some fruits de la mer are displayed and, at busy times, a man stands shucking and jiving. At the other end is an ice cream machine and window. It was our first evening in Paris - a Sunday, the weather was warm and we had wandered down to this area and recognized the name. What better way to begin our trip? We ordered a dozen oysters, fines de claires, and a bottle of Pouilly ... read more
