Rural Camping Five days in an empty rural camping site in Vauchignon, South of Dijon. A deserted field where the nearest bakery or supermarket was to be found three villages away in a town called Nolay. Three days of pouring rain, day and night: a true test to my tent and my camping survivor skills! But I was looking forward to climbing the Falaises de Cormot, so I waited for the rain to stop. The falaise is beautiful though there were very few people climbing there. The routes are long and commiting and it's not always possible to set up a toprope, essencial in my case as I was climbing on my own. I had a hair-raising time abseiling from this vertical 40 metres high cliff and trying to climb it using the Petzl Basic blocker ... read more

Beautiful countryside, pretty good wine, but not much else to do there except go on a 3-hour treacherous hike to the "top of the world"...some hill where you can see the entire region. I think those few months of running last year taught me a lot about perseverance 'cause just when I was ready to give up I could hear Leon's voice in my head telling me to push it. Thanks, trainer! ... read more

We had 2 chances to see the Eiffel Tower. The first night was kind of a drive-by but the second night we got to drink champagne under it and then traveled to the top. We also stayed long enough to see it light up (which it does every hour after dark). ... read more

Ok, well maybe its not actually that big. Maybe it just feels that way because I don't know my way around yet. Oh, and for those of you who are interested, the town's name rhymes with "Toe", but you have to say it with your jaw dropped and your mouth really rounded in order to get that obligitory "French" sound. I know the other question you're all dying to ask, besides how you pronounce the name of my new home, is "When the heck is she going to stop updating!" Well, sorry to dissapoint you, but I'm making full use of the free wireless internet at the hotel while I have it, which means tant pis pour vous! (too bad for you). So, having caught you up on my meandering and misadventures in Versailles, I'm getting ... read more

Bonsoir!! Oh my I can not believe it is my final night in Paris. It has been so much fun....who would have thought that 2.5 days here could be as demanding as hiking in the Alps. We have tried to fit alot in and have succeeded I think. It was great that Linda and Katie met up with us yesterday. For those of you who do not know.....Linda is a childhood friend from Golden who happens to still be a great friend and just happened to have the Paris stop of the European Cruise her and her 22 year old daughter were taking Sept 23. We had a very special day; There was a huge parade of pipers from all over and many streets were closed. It was just our luck that we could walk (march) ... read more

Finally, a real update thanks to wifi internet access. I'm actually in Pau now, checked into my hotel, but I'm going to back up and fill you in on my weekend in Paris/Versailles, so indulge me, if you will ;-) CouCou tout le monde! So here I am, safe in France and back in the bosom of my loving French family. I have missed them so so much, and I’m so happy for the chance to spend time with them before I head for Pau. I left Wednesday evening from Philadelphia. Now, for those of you familiar with other installments of “Kate flies home: Tales of Terror from our nation’s airports”, you know that Philly and I do not exactly have the greatest track record. They’ve lost my luggage at least twice, and my flights always ... read more

We took the TGV train from Lyon to Paris which like the Eurostar trains in Italy you could tell was going really fast! Our train was non stop between Lyon and Paris so it was a very quick trip of around only 2 hours. We arrived into Paris Gare de Lyon which is one of a number of terminus stations in Paris. (There are different terminus stations depending on which direction you want to travel to from Paris.) Like we did in Amsterdam, we were able to buy a 3 day travel pass in Paris which gave us unlimited travel in the 3 inner zones for 3 days. Accommodation within the inner area of Paris was quite expensive so we ended up booking another ETAP hotel (similar to what we stayed in at Avignon) which was ... read more
