Bonjour from Paris, We have a double bed private!!!! Okay, so our hostel is in a shady part of town, and we had to trudge our luggage five flights of stairs to get to our room.... but we have our OWN room!!!! Favorite moments in Paris: Rounding the corner after getting off the Metro at Trocadero and ..... there she was..... the Eiffel Tower in all her splendid glory. Watching the sunset from the top of the Eiffel Tower Watching the Eiffel Tower sparkle at 9PM Eating a nutella crepe, while basking in the sunlight.... that's right.... at the Eiffel Tower Sitting in Notre Dame while the choir chanted a cappela Copping a squat by the Seine while eating our sandwiches Seeing the Mona Lisa at the Louvre ( she's really small) Seeing David's painting of ... read more

Sorry about this, but I'm leaving for a week for Prague and Berin... but I promise to update when I return with plenty of pictures. Although this is the least planned trip I've ever gone on (ok, that's a lie... the time when I was supposed to referee at 8am Saturday morning, and discovered at 3am Friday morning that I hadn't actually bought a ticket back to Virginia might have been a little worse), I'm really excited. I ran out to get some travel guides today and both cities look beautiful! Plus, the girl I'm going with, Stephanie, even suggested that we go running together which is perfect (especially given I have to wake up at 4:30am tomorrow morning and I was planning on going running tonight at 10:30pm as I didn't think I would be ... read more

I had my first cinema class today and the professor is excellent. He's very laid back (he should be as he has 2 hours to just analyze short segments of films) and likes to make jokes. There are only a handful of students in class from countries like Colombia, Japan, China, USA, and Mexico. I actually made the acquaintance of a Chinese student whose English name was Robin. He's been in France for about a year now. After class, I went for my rendez-vous with Monsieur Ringer to discuss what classes I was taking etc. I also made the big decision that I had been hesitating over to teach english to french kids. I'm proud of my choice but I know it will take dedication and organization on my part, which I'm not exactly good at. ... read more

Bonjour, tout le monde! Here I am, back in Versailles, and it feels absolutely amazing to be speaking French and visitng all my French friends, though of course I miss everyone back home as well. I have a super-long update that I'm planning to post soon to fill you in on all the details of my trip, but right now I'm on the de la Bigne's computer with it's crazy french keyboard, so I'm going to keep it brief. I'm not even over my jetlag yet, but I've already been to the Cathedral St. Denis, the park du Versailles behind the chateau, and out to dinner with the whole Furman group. Tomorrow I'm either going to head for the Musee du Cluny to see some famous tapestries (lady and the unicorn, anyone?), or go to the ... read more

Hi All - Fi and I are in Anglet, to be precise. I dont think that it is technically in Bordeaux, but time is of the essence in overpriced internet hubs. Anglet is just north of Biarritz, which in turn is just north of the spanish border and San Sebastian. Its a surfing place and there are so many aussies and so hot that I keep forgettting I am in France. It is beautiful, though, and for lack of a bathing suit (the one crucial packing miss on my part), i did what the europeans do and suntanned topless. Funny how not strange it is...its on the same lines as selling liquor in grocery stores and drinking in public - when in a place where it is the norm, suddenly its not a big deal anymore. ... read more

hi, One last post before we leave the comfort of the apartment and head off in konny again, I will have to be dragged screaming away from the bath, I've had one a day since we've been here, sometimes 2, never been so clean. We have been attempting to get down to some schoolwork this week and have done ok I think. James has been very patient with me and thankfully he is pretty good at maths so he's just sort of got on with that subject himself. He did groan when he saw that the next chapter in his science book was reproduction - don't really blame him, not something you want your own mother to go over in great detail. I've put in a few more pics a couple of this week and some previous ... read more

My time in Paris has gone too quickly and there was just not enough time to see and do everything. I already have a list of activities that I want to do and sites that I want to see for next time - and yes, there will be a next time! I spent my final day in Paris cramming in as much as possible. I stayed within the immediate area of my hotel for most of the day and explored in more depth some of the local sites. I started the day off with french breakfast of coffee and croissant in a little cafe just behind the Notre Dame - looking over the Seinne river. After breakfast I headed back to the Notre Dame to look at the interior. I did not go inside on my ... read more

Hi Guys! After that crazy night in Paris, I woke up to spending some time by myself strolling through some of the sights we saw on the tour the day before. I took the Metro to the Eiffel Tower and posted up there for a bit. I wanted to go up by it was actually raining and cloudy so I just strolled around (in my new raincoat) and people watched again. I did love the Peace garden at the end of the plaza in front of the Eiffel Tower. I ended up walking to L'Ecole Militaire, down to Les Invalides and then to the Rodin Museum. Very cool. Love the sculptures. By that time, I ended up on Rue St. Germain which is pretty poppin. I walked all the way down and caught some lunch. After ... read more

Today 3 couples who had never met, joined together for lunch in a Paris Mini Fodors GTG. All we had in common was we post on the Fodors Travel Forum. We chose to meet at Cottage Marcadet in the Montmartre district of Paris. This restaurant has only been open for a year and a half and according to positive reviews by Zagats and Pudlo it is well on its way to some notoriety. Our appetizers varied from saumon fume, pied de veau, a veloute de roquette de fleurs, and a risotto avec legumes. We chose plat principals of caille rotie, lapin, cabillard and a vegetarian selection. a wonderful St Emillion was there to enjoy. None of us had dessert but the delices were marvellous. One couple lives in New Hampshire, one lives in Denver Colorado and ... read more

Yesterday was another long day of travel to Avignon. We had a lunch stop along the way at the medieval city of Carcassone which was pretty cool. The city walls are still in place and the interior is lined with narrow streets full of cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops. We didn’t have much time to explore but we had a quick look around then ate lunch in a sunny little tree lined square before piling back onto the bus. We arrived in Avignon “The City of the Popes” in the late afternoon and had a couple of hours to look around the Palace of the Popes which was big, bright and airy, though surprisingly empty. There was virtually no decoration or chattels in place which was a bit disappointing after the Royal Palace in Madrid. One ... read more
