Paris is cold and the sky is incredible when we arrive. Fast moving, low hanging storm clouds, intermittent sun, and a biting wind all push those feelings of euphoria that come from traveling and finally being off the train after 12 hours. It's a welcome change from the heat of Spain and Florida before that. So this time around we get into Paris' Austerlitz station at 0900 with only a name and phone number for our couchsurfing hosts and an "international" phone card that we can’t figure out how to use in order to operate a Paris pay phone. I don't know what it is about foreign phone cards and me, but my brain becomes thoroughly non-functional when it comes to their correct use. During our Scandinavian trip we never figured out how to make a ... read more

Today should be the most difficult day in my Paris trip. Not sure if it was because of jet lag or my laziness, I left an hour later than scheduled, and it was already 10:30 when I arrived at Chateau de Versailles. The main gates themselves were gorgeous enough to hold your breath. Passing through the plaza in front of the gates, I came to the entrance of the palace. I followed the chaos and arrived at the chapel. Wow, finally I unveiled the palace. The first thing I saw was a huge organ while sunlight penetrated softly via the coloured window. Next I climbed up the marble staircase and reached the living place of Louis XIV and his queen on the 1st floor. No matter in bedrooms, study room or guest room, all of the ... read more

Today was our last full day so we had decided to try and fit in as much as possible. First of all we walked up to the Palais De Longchamps, it had good reviews in tourist guides as a large animal park and tribute to the water gods. We got lost and found the side entrance. We were disappointed we had even bothered going there as the park was devoid of animals as it was under construction. Fortunately we found the fountains at the front entrance which were worth the walk. We had about 3 million photos in front of them (Nicola and Jaimee's boyfriend Joel have a joke that Jaimee and I take photos of any fountains we see, sadly they are probably right, I think I have a problem). Next on the cards was ... read more

We woke up to another rainy day with temperatures in the mid 60s. We rendezvoused at the Seattle’s Best Coffee Bar in the ship’s centrum and headed towards the shuttle bus that would take us from Zeebrugge pier, where the ship docked, to the train station for the 15 min train ride to Brugges. The port would not allow the shuttle bus to leave prior to 9:00 AM, which meant we would miss the train at 9:05 AM. We joined forces with Teri and Larry, another couple traveling on the ship, and caught two vans to Brugges for about $7.00 USD each. This was actually cheaper and quicker than the shuttle bus and train option, and left us off in the Brugges old town center. The train would have left us a 20 minute walk away. ... read more

THE ULTIMATE BLOG First and foremost, thank you to everyone for sharing this trip with us. Your notes and messages along the way have been appreciated more than you know. We wanted to write this final entry (trademarked - The Ultimate Blog) for posterity, something to let the kids read someday along with looking at all the pictures. But it's hard to know where to begin and what to say. We really packed a lot into 5 months of traveling. The conclusion of a trip like this is apparently an emotional thing. But here goes... Our initial plan was to rent an apartment in a Southern European town or city and live there for 6 months, taking side trips along the way. But after comparing ticket prices, we figured, why not make it a (quasi) around ... read more

Let me see how I put this. I’ve been two weeks in France and I still haven’t unpacked. My room is a mess, my clothes are everywhere and I really need to do laundry. On a more positive side, I’m beginning to really feel at home in Paris. It really is an amazing city. I’ve done so many things that I couldn’t write about them all. At least I can talk about last weekend which was pretty fun and is fresh in my mind. Last Saturday a couple of friends and I went to the so-called “Techno Parade”. We immediately felt a little old and definitively underdressed when we got off at the Bastille metro station. Everyone looked like they were 15 years old, and the outfits were elaborate, to say the least. Eventually we got ... read more

Bonjour tout le monde. Here we are in beautiful Nice on la Cote d'Azur. Monday morning we boarded the train with our railpasses and headed south to Nice. We travelled on TGV via Avignon, Aix-en-Provence and then headed east through Marseille, Cannes, Antibes and finally arrived in Nice some 5.5 hours later. We had a great trip though. I started talking to a woman who was visiting her mother near Nice who soon realized we had never been in the region and on a train south in France for that matter that she started pointing out all the main attractions and geographical locations which was very nice of her. The other gentleman to my left was a truck driver who lives in France near Switzerland I think and had a very thick vosges accent. I didn't ... read more

I met up for another one of those free walking tours that I did in London. New Europe Tours are definitely cool. We met at Place St. Michel and saw so much. Notre Dame, Latin Quarter, Ile de la Cite, Pont Neuf, The Louvre, Palais Royale, Eiffel Tower, Tuileries Gardens, Les Invalides, Acaqemie Francaise, Place de la Concorde (i loved the obelisk), Musee D'Orsay, L'Opera, Champs-Elysee, Arc de Triomphe (again yay!!). Another fun day walking all over and seeing so much. We stopped for lunch at a cafe and oh my god the cheese in my baguette was the best cheese i've ever had!! ha ha! I think it was like emmamel or something. I met some friends on the tour, Darren an Aussie, Bonnie from Tucson, Hayden a Kiwi and Bobby from NY. We ended ... read more
