46 years ago, Wendy did a French exchange in Bordeaux. We drove there today, found a pleasant place to stay on the outskirts and tomorrow plan to explore the city and hopefully find the house where she lived. Then weather is surprisingly still and warm for the time of the year, enabling us to sit and eat pleasantly outside the van in the evenings. ... read more

I have been noticing something. Americans make a lot of trash. Especially compared to the French, who seem to produce next to none. I suppose this can be explained by several things. * 1. They eat less. So they have less packaging, etc., to throw away. And, since their portions are smaller, they have less leftover food to be disposed of as well. * 2. They shop more often and buy less, usually only buying what they need for the next few days. They use it, throw away the packaging, and get more only when they need it. The lack of stocking up probably makes it seem like they get rid of even less since it’s more evenly spread out. * 3. Packaging in general is simpler and uses less material. * 4. When you go ... read more

September 24, 2006 After many transfers we went to the beautiful Sacre Coeur. One can only stare at it in awe because it takes your breath away. The inside of the church with the carvings and gold trim are amazing. We were able to sit down and take it all in before a stroll and lunch in Montmartre. Had some French onion soup and the waiter never brought us water. We then hit up a Patisserie where we got a chocolat mousse and headed down to Moulin Rouge. Then back to l'hotel. Took a nap and then went to Notre Dame to listen to an organ concert and take some more of the beautiful and ancient church in. Days later it still takes my breath away. We then strolled along and visited some street vendors shortly ... read more

And I'm finally able to update again! Still no internet at my place, and the apartment search continues, although I may have found something, but it won't be avaliable for another 8-10 days. Anyhow, I found a restaurant in the center of town with free wifi, so now all I have to do is eat lunch here every day for the rest of the year and you'll hear from me regularly ;-) Here's all the latest from Pau...but no pictures this time, sorry! Les Bearnaises… And no, I don’t mean like the sauce. A Bearnaise is what you call someone from the Bearn region of France (and a person from Pau is called a Palois, I’ve come to learn). Things here are continuing to roll along with varying degrees of speed and ease, but the Bearnaises ... read more

September 22, 2006 Big day today! Grabbed a baguette and hopped on the metro to the Louvre. Wow! I'm not much of an art buff, but I was so amazed by how beautiful the art was, I could barely speak. I can't believe how large some of the paintings are - probably as tall as a one-story building. The Mona Lisa was absolutely beautiful! All of the things people say about how dissappointing she is are totally untrue. Sculptures were wonderful as well as the Greek, Roman, and Egyptian art and artifacts. After the Louvre it was raining so we headed back to the hotel for coats and umbrellas and ate lunch at a cafe called Hippopatomus. Excellent service and a great chef salad. Had some french fries and (my fave) a Coca-Cola Light. Very yummy! ... read more

September 21, 2006 Dinner at L'Petite Troquet was awesome! I had a French version of a caeser salad with fresh strips of parmasean and then a filet with potatoes and veggies. Jeff had the same salad and then lamb roasted in oregano and potatoes with veggies. We both had creme brulee for dessert and a half bottle of red wine. Was perfect - about 74 Euro. Before dinner we watched the sun set at the Eiffel Tower and then went back after dark to see the lights blink. Laid down in the center underneath the tower - breathtaking! We have mastered the metro! Traveled back to the Eiffel Tower this morning (after a tomato, mozzarella, and basil panini) and road to the second floor for magnifique views. Sent postcards at la poste on the first floor ... read more

Chamonix Mont-Blanc Pure, dry cold air; amazing scenery; beautiful high mountains where ice and snow never melt; lots of fantastic rock climbing routes; charming towns and small villages... Chamonix is a very special place. I camped right at the foot of the Glacier Les Bossons for 2 weeks and was surprised to be able to walk around in the morning wearing a t-shirt when the thermometer showed 5°C. I got out-of-breath and nearly fainted when I walked too fast up stairs in the Aiguille du Midi observatory, some 3000m high. I felt comfortable climbing on my own using my rope clamp, but was even happier to meet up other climbers, have a real belayer and company to visit the Swiss and Italian borders. I seriously thought about staying in Chamonix to learn French and try a ... read more

We were late up and the spent the morning wandering around the town. It being Monday, nearly everywhere was closed. In the afternoon we did a delightful 15 mile circular bike ride of the area, following a route provided by the campsite. We passed through Cre and Bazouges, both lovely villages on the river and then went past several imposing Chateau before returning to our starting point. We managed to find a hotel that was open in the evening for a traditional French dinner. ... read more
