Now that we were all in the ‘French mode’, we thought we should drive to the southern part of France and visit my brother, sister-in-law and their kids who happened to be holidaying near Avignon. And we wouldn’t say no to a free night at their place and a washing machine either! :) So off again….driving driving…stop…driving….stop….driving driving….stop…..wait….wrong way….where are we?…go back….driving….driving…why is it taking so long??...driving…we should have been there hours ago!!!....driving…driving… About 10 hours later we arrived at the cute little French town where they were staying. Basically we were in time for a late home cooked dinner that my brother had prepared for us, and bed. The next day we explored the village and the Roman ruins and castles that were dotted around the area. Everything is so old here, and as my ... read more

Considering we were going to be travelling soooo close to Paris... i had managed to convince sam and mum to let me take them there and show them the city of frogs legs, crazy drivers and love! So after Amsterdam, it was about a 5 hour drive to Paris, straight through Belgium. It was so lovely driving through the little French villages along our way, and we saw loads of war memorials all through Belgium and France. My brother Darren had only been in Belgium the day earlier visiting our great uncles war grave and finding out family history stuff, so we missed out on seeing him but hope to catch up in France over the next couple of days. Paris was busy, wet and hopeless to drive through. I am now convinced that I can ... read more

No doubt about it, I gotta get myself a new body. Something around 30 years younger than the one I've got now would be handy. What was a minor rib complaint after Hossegor blew out to full on crippler after 3 crummy waves in Lacanau. So after those 3 waves, the surfing is over. Is it time to bite the bullet, admit defeat in the age war and buy myself a longboard on return to Oz? 11 days of prepaid accommodation in Lacanau meant we were staying, surfing or no surfing. 11 days in a beach town like Lacanau can drag when: - the skies vary from light grey to dark grey. - the town is in severe wind down mode after the season. The beach villages along the Atlantic coast are the original French ghost ... read more

We went into Bordeaux by bus and tram and easily found the tourist office to book a day long wine tour for tomorrow. The rest of the day was spent wandering around the old city which is quite compact enabling us to see most of the sites and have a walk over the Pont Pierre to the other side of the Garonne. It is an interesting place with many fine streets and buildings. We also managed to fit in lunch at an excellent fish restaurant recommended by the rough guide. ... read more

My entry begins with a slightly unnecessary rant about sandwich fillings. Okay, so sandwich fillings might not be the most relevant subject matter for a travel blog, but believe me, after getting up at the crack of 5:30 after not much sleep and waiting around at Lewes station with a heck of a lot of luggage, the last thing I want is to buy my breakfast and find it chock full of ingredients that I a) don't like and b) didn't order. Namely, pepper and margarine. Seriously. So they're slightly strange things to dislike, but that's hardly the point. The point is, I was tired, I was hungry, I wanted an egg and tomato sandwich and the overpriced station café failed to correctly label my selection as "tomato, egg, a generous sprinkling of pepper and copious ... read more

Well we have left Vigo for our next planned date- Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. It was sad to leave our good friends in Vigo but we were looking foward to what lied ahead. We travelled throuth Andorra, a small country built up and full of shops in its capital; but with beutiful scenery only 20 mins away from its central district. We indulged ourselves in Europes largest spar complex (30 Euros for 3 hours in a large pool, says Ben) and found a lovely camping spot smack bang in the middle of the Pyenees in a little village called Soldeu. We took a cable care to the top on one of the Mount Gallo which had gorgeous scenery. Sadly bens ankle meant he coudlnt hire a downhill mountain bike, but maybe thats for the best. We ... read more

We left Athens and a quick 3 hours later, arrived at Paris Orly airport. A little bit of navigation of the Paris tube required before settling in to our new home for the next few days, Residence Foch Hotel. I now have a raging headcold and therefore was sent straight to bed under instruction from Doctor Bing. I had a small nap, whilst Bing checked out the local 'Shopi' and provided us with a good supply of bagette, cheese, ham & coke. Later, I negotiated a 20 minute walk around the local area with Doctor Bing. We checked out the Arc de Triomph and even walked to the top of it's 238 steps which provided us with stunning 360 degree views of the city. The next day we were introduced to Banana & Chocolate roadside crepes. ... read more

September 20, 2006 We arrived in Paris at around 1:40pm local time on September 19th. We had to take a bus to our terminal, then go through customs and get our luggage. After a 40 minute ride to our hotel (Hotel Saint Jacques - the Latin Quarter) we showered and walked down to Notre Dame. What an amazing first thing to see. It's so massive and I absolutely love the gothic architecutre. The inside is so amazing. I personally love the stained glass the most. Afterwards we took a 1 hour cruise of the Seine. It was our first look at The Louvre, The Eiffel Tower and Pont Neuf. We then ate our first French meal at Le Village Rosnard. I had salmon with a bernaisse sauce and fresh veggies, while Jeff had steak and French ... read more

September 23, 2006 Caught the RER after stopping at the open air market on Boulevard St. Germain. Took it to Versailles to see Chateau Versailles. Spectacular! Just coming up the cobblestone "driveway" and through the gold gates makes you think about what guests must have thought hundreds of years ago when they came by carriage for a party. Although they say Louis XIV was not arrogant, you might think he is by seeing this monstrous chateau he built that has murals of him all over many of the ceilings - and he is depicted as God - a God of War and fighting many countries. The hallways and opera house were amazing and I think I enjoyed the ceilings the most. The way the wood was carved and all of the hundreds of murals really took ... read more
