We're getting ready to go to France next week, Malcolm and I, to our house in Laroque d'Olmes. Lots to do, and not feeling as enthusiastic as we thought we would. We've been looking forward to this moment for more than 3 years when we first bought the house, but now we're not quite so sure.....I think it's the thought of missing all our friends, and more particularly our 2 year old twin grandsons, Ben and Alex. And at the same time, I'm packing for India in November.............lots to do... read more

Woke up and had to get out of the houseboat and out of Amsterdam. Gene and Gina decided to do a load of laundry before we left but by the time we had to go it was still damp because the dryer wasn’t doing its job all that well. We packed up their car, and I took them up on their generous offer to drive me to the airport. We got out of the city center just fine, but then traffic came to a literal standstill for just long enough to miss my flight home. By the time we realized I wouldn’t be able to make my flight while still stuck in traffic, Gene suggested I re-book out of Paris and spend the night there with them. Since there weren’t any more flights out that day, ... read more

So it has been a while since my last blog entry (yes, I survived Oktoberfest). After taking a day off of Oktoberfest on Monday, I wanted to get back at it on Tuesday. Before heading down at about 10, I checked my email to see if I had heard from my billet in Lyon. There was a message asking what time my train got in. After seaching for about 2 hours, I had a connection that only went through France & Germany (where my pass is valid) and arrived at a decent time of day (I couldn't find a hostel online). Then I had to go to the train station to make reservations. All told it was about 4 by the time I got down to the Weisen. After searching in vain for a seat I ... read more

Bonjour! So I apologize for the lack of communication in the past week or so. I took my flight Sep. 23 from Washington DC to Dublin, Ireland, then on to Lyon, France. During the trip from Dublin to Lyon, I met a really cool guy named Oozie, who was from Lyon and he told me about the city a lot since I'd never been there before. I also had a Guiness at 11am in Dublin's airport. True fashion... ...Anyway on to la France. I spent the first night at the home of one of the English teachers at my high school here, Agnes (sounds a lot better in French), she is so nice and gave me a tour of the city and her family was so welcoming. Philip is her husband, and he's a math professor ... read more

View Our Progress! Well, today we are off on our trip around the world, which will end in Australia in December? January? Dare we hope for February? Well, whenever the money runs out, anyway. We start in Paris, the city of light, some say the most romantic city in the world. We are going with virtually no expectations (or really any prior planning for that matter!) which makes for an interesting trip. The past few days have been hard for Sabrina (and a little for Chris as well), knowing it will be some time until she sees her parents, her family, and of course or sweet dog, Reece. It was a great couple of weeks, though. The wedding was amazing (thanks to all of you who made it that way), our families spent some time ... read more

Getting to St Just We touched down in Charles de Gaulle with extremely heavy packs. Damn. But we were excited to be going to St Just again. As renting a car for five days was cheaper than two return TGV tickets to Redon and gave us a lot of freedom in between, we had rented a car over the internet. So it was with excitement that we went to the Hertz counter to pick up our Fiat Panda. After waiting for half an hour the man told us that as we had a reservation we could have just walked outside and picked up our car and gone. The only map that Hertz gave us was this little crappy map of central Paris but, to its credit, it got us half way out before we got lost. ... read more

This entry the result of a loooooong, hard, good, needed conversation that lasted until four in the morning. Creed (abridged, since this blog is reserved mainly for cultural commentary more than personal feelings, etc.): * I will do at least one thing every day that scares me. * I will learn to trust people. * I will learn to let go and let the real me show. * I will think about the good things in my life when I am feeling low. * I will repeat to myself before every social situation: I have something to offer. ... read more

My journey from Tampere to London was an arduous one. The flight was around 2 hours and 40 minutes long. After half an hour going through immigration (things would be so much easier with an EU passport) and baggage pick up, the bus from London Stansted Airport to Victoria Station was 70 minutes and then after waiting 20 minutes for the night bus, it took a further 25 minutes to get to Nicola's flat in Ladbroke Grove. I finally arrived at the flat at 3am - which would've been 5am Finnish time. So as you can imagine, I was absolutely exhausted. The next two days were spent sleeping and on my laptop - reloading my iPod (yay!) and catching up on blog entries and emails. Then on September 28th, it was back on the road (or ... read more

"Paris is the city in which one loves to live" After I received my surprisingly ok leaving cert results and managed to get a place in college, Da surprised me and my bro by taking us to the world cup in Paris. Now as you can imagine, having the travelling bug flowing through your very bones and STILL waiting to visit Paris, this was simply delightful.... Everyone kept telling me that it wouldn't live up to the expectations I had building up for years but thankfully they were all very much wrong....They met those expectations and still left me with even more!!!!! The rugby event was in itself an experience of a life time...Ireland didn't quite do as well as we had all hoped, but, the world cup buzz and exhilarating atmosphere everywhere you walked along ... read more
