Yesterday my friend Amy and I, spent the afternoon in the town of Avignon. It was about an hours train ride from Montpellier and it was a fun day. We visited the Palais des Papes, (The Pope's Palace) and the Pont d'Avignon. It cost around 7 euros to see both together with headphones that gave you a guided tour. It was a really nice day, not too cold, and I liked the town of Avignon. We walked around the town for a little and did a little shopping also. Classes at the Institute are going well. It's cool because there are so many people from all over the world in your classes. There are students from Japan and China, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, some Americans, Syria, Brazil, Argentina and the list goes on. It makes the classes ... read more

Bonjour! So Tuesday was my first day of classes here in Montpellier and it should be an interesting semester. I have about 3hours of french everyday except for Wednesday when I have no classes and then 2 electives in French and another class called "Laboratoire" which I'm not quite sure of what it is yet...donc on verra! lol. And then there is my service class that goes with my volunteering which is 2hours a week. Not a bad schedule. Monday I also started my volunteer service with Pharmaciens sans Frontieres. I work with older people, who are all in their 60, 70s, and 80s, and then there's a French kid named Frederic who's 21; but they are very nice and only speak french, so its great for me because I am forced to speak french...yeah! lol ... read more

Yesterday I spent the day in the city of Marseille with my friend Amy, and it was a lot of fun. It's located about an hour and a half from Montpellier by train and is right on the Mediterranean. The ticket was about 24 euros for both ways because we have a pass that gives discounts to people between the ages of 12 and 25, which makes traveling much better. The train ride was fun and it stopped at Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, and Nimes before arriving in Marseille. It was very beautiful and the weather was quite nice but very windy. We walked down from the train station to the Vieux Port I believe it is called and walked around the different streets. We took a boat ride that usually goes to the Chateau d'If, but today ... read more

So yesterday we went to the town of St. Guilhem le Desert which is located i think in the beginning part of the Massif Central in France. In 804 Guillaume, Earl of Toulouse, came to the Valley of Gellone and visited and two years later decided to become a monk and live in teh Gellone Valley. This village became a part of the route for the pilgrimage to Santiago de Copeostella. It was a cool little town in the middle of mountains and we spent the afternoon there and had a guided tour. Later, we had time to go hiking up the mountains. It is here that the cloister museum in New York comes from because an american bought part of it (i believe 148 pieces form here) and they are now the centrepiece of the ... read more

So today I had my first visit to the french doctor's office. I have to get my allergy shots while I'm here so its making my experience here in France a little more interesting. My host mom went with me this morning since it was my first time and to help me explain and what to do. THe doctor was very nice. So in France going to the doctor is much different than back at home. You can either make an appointment(which is better) or go in and u will usually have to wait awhile. Pam and I went this morning and didnt have to wait very long so that was good. The doctor was very nice and understood exactly what to do with my extract and the shot didnt hurt. He took my blood pressure ... read more

The above title is a rhyme so you can pronounce Nimes correctly. I visited this city to the northwest of Aix for my research project on Roman ruins. It has the best preserved Roman amphitheater in France. It was a heck of a lot nicer than Frejus's, and bigger too. This time I had company on my travels- Mollie came with me. We met at the train station to take a train to Marseille but the train was delayed by half an hour! We were in danger of missing our connection to Nimes, but then I had a brillant idea. We could take the bus to Marseille! So that's what we did. Adapted our plan and made it to the "train shed" with time to spare. The ride to Nimes was much more crowded than my ... read more

So today I ventured off to the town of Nimes which is about 20 minute train ride or so from Montpellier. We got there around Noon and spent the afternoon walking around. Nimes is ancient town and has many roman ruins. Near the train station there is a big arena that looks to me like the colleseum and its where they had bull fights etc. It was really cool and I took many photos. We also around the Jardin de la Fontaine and walked to the top. It was a very nice day. I went with Amy, Joy, and Erik. It was a fun day and I'll post more photos when I can! TOnights dinner was "MacPam" ...like "McDonalds" but my host mom added her name! lol. It was very good. Oh and last night I ... read more

So sorry about my entry from yesterday. I started writing it before we had to meet up for our guided tour of Montpellier and ran out of time. Voila, the tour of Montpellier was nice although very very cold. It's amazing how cold it is here. Although today is pretty nice so far so let's hope that continues. I didn't understand everything the tour guide was saying since it was in French but I understood the majority. I took a lot of pictures and once I figure out how to post pictures on this thing I will put some pictures of Montpellier in here. Last night everyone was home again for dinner so it was a big crowd. Dinner was very good and Ive come to the conclusion that I'll probably think every meal I at ... read more
