We all left at about 10 ish heading for Lunel near Montpellier. As Sarah and Nathan have a normal car they made it about 2 hours before us. The camp site seemed ok until guess what.......we got to the pool and the lads got told off......no shorts again (dont like france anymore)!!! We spent the next 2 days on the beach, there were some really nice sun loungers....well more like beds with comfy matresses that Kez and Sarah really wanted to have a go on but we weren't allowed as they were €30 a day, not happy bunnies!!! The sea was just like back home too whats that all about. The weather has still been really hot but it is cooler at night which is lovely. The plan was to leave onThursday morning but when Kez ... read more

Our timing couldn't have been worse for cycling in the south of France. Record heat, up to 35 C today, I am told. Today was a day off and we went to Carsaconne in the morning by train. By the time we left at noon, we were melting and the crowds were just beginning to arrive. I had a 2 hour nap this afternoon and then a massage by the massage therapist for the Kiwi team that trains here. Monday, we went into the foothills of the Pyrennes. The initial ride into the foothills was still relatively cool. The greenery, the lovely roads, the company all made for a delightful start of the day. Then Ruth, Mary Anne and 2 others headed down along a river while yours truly decided to challenge a 10-11% grade. It ... read more

we arrived in perpignan late last night on another train packed with backpackers. i cannot stress how much i dislike the spanish trains, there are not enough of them, they break down (like the one last night), they are just rubbish. however when they do work. its wonderful. watching the rocky mountains suddenly flourish into greenland from castellon to barcelona was just such a stunning sight. today we have planned our route for the following days and cleaned all our clothes. perpignan is a cute town with interesting shops and sites, i like it. Emily was lovely for letting us stay last night. much appreciation. she has the cutest cat called cookie. we bought her a bag of sweets from this amazing sweet store in town. the girl that owned it looked exactly like Melody. Geo: 43.341, 2.46664Less than 2 hours sleep. Returned from Jazz fest at 2:30 AM and others returned even later (kept me up). Changed trains in Hendaye. Awesome french pastries ... ham and cheese croissant, chocolatine , and a raisin bun. How many french pastries can I eat before butter oozes out of my pores???Speaking french has been challenging. What little I knew has been long forgotten. Met an old French lady on the train that speaks Spanish.I thought it would be cooler in France, but it's experiencing a heat wave with temps in the high 30's. Grabbed a meat pie walking to the old part of Carcassonne from the train station. Bought some very expensive cookies there (3€ for 4). The bad part? Not very good. Ultra touristy here, very pricey. It's like a mix of ... read more

We arrived at Le Monastere yesterday after an uneventful trip. Le Monastere isn't quite as upscale as I thought it would be. However, it is a beautiful little hotel in a lovely little town, Limoux. The proprieter is a cycling coach for several teams such as New Zealand and has coached a woman who was silver medalitst in last Olympics. He was an economist in his former life and was head of the office of the budget in Canada before he completely changed his life style 12 years ago by starting this business. He and his wife and a couple of employess run it. There are 9 of us here, of whom 6 will be staying for 2 weeks. We still intend to go to Israel next week. Yesterday, I assembled Ruth's bike very easily. I ... read more

Just kidding. It's been a while since our last blog, so there is much catching up to do. We are currently in a small village called Preixan that is within the Midieval city of Carcassone. SO AMAZING, but we'll get to that. One thing we forgot to mention in the Prague blog (it took my all not to spell that BLOGUE), was the daytrip we took to a concentration camp called Terezin. A ghetto turned workcamp turned death camp, and many sections have been newly converted into concrete hot dog stands. Weird. The place was also quite unkept-- meaning that we could have walked into any of the barracks and carved out names into them. It's nice to have the up close and interactive experience, but I doubt the important parts will be around in 5 ... read more

We are on our way. We have been lucky. Three days ago, we were upgraded to business class. We are in chicago in the red carpet club, waiting for our flight to Frankfurt. Ruth's Bike Friday was easy to pack and is travelling free! and easy. I hope to log on regularly to keep everyone in touch -- even if you aren't particularly interested i hope to make you jealous. Hello Everyone! Today we woke up early and went up to the Cevenne Mountain Range... Took a long hike through the river valley and down into St. Jean Du Garde, a very quaint little town where we found one cafe open for lunch, the rest were shut down for the World Cup! There is nooo escape! This is my last day in France, tomorrow I leave for Rome and the Amalfi Coast. I wanted to follow up with some other pictures I found of Barcelona, the first listed here is the monument to Christopher Columbus that is at the base of the La Rambla and dominates the port of Barcelona. Supposedly on this exact spot, Christopher Columbus landed after discovering the "New World" and was met by Ferdinand and Isabella. If you look closely you can ... read more
