Today was the day for exploring the local area. Just south-east of Pont Aven is Doëlan, a small fishing village that spans both sides of its river – so it has a Rive Gauche and a Rive Droite just like Paris. As the tourist blurbs say, it really is the archetypal fishing port. We managed to get there quite early so there were not many tourists and we were absolutely taken with the place. There is a walking trail along both sides of the river and also along the coast where you can walk, basically as far as you like in either direction – it just goes on and on. We only walked a short way along the coast as we were getting hungry. Sadly, the few restaurants in town were all full by the time ... read more

Saturday 1/09/12 Le Croisic We said good bye to Ricarda and Jean-Luc and set the GPS for Croisic on the Atlantic coast. We knew nothing about Le Croisic but on the map it looked like it was a small village on the tip of a peninsula and with some internet magic we had booked a room for three nights at Hotel l'Ocean. It was a bit more expensive than we would normally look at but as we had lived cheaply in Crouzilles and were about to spend a week for free next week we thought we could afford it. On arrival we were not disappointed. The hotel was literally on the rocky coast and we got a room on the second floor with a large terrace with a 180 degrees ocean view. Of course we had ... read more

So after my stay in the South I made the long and treacherous journey across France to Brittany, by train, lugging about 45kg of luggage behind me. I set out at 11 o'clock from Toulon - luckily my pastor was kind enough to escort me to the train or I might have had some difficulty battling my way down the stairs and up the escalator. When I got on the train I felt I was about to re-live the unpleasant memories of my first train journey in France all those months ago and that’s more or less what happened. Only this time it was worse. I braced myself for the hour journey to Marseille, standing up, wedged between the luggage. It would seem that as much France prides itself on efficient and punctual public transport, they ... read more

On a aussis dé... read more

Und hier konnte ... read more

We got into Rennes pretty late at night, but didn't have any problems finding our next host. Joanna who is an animator and illustrator and loves Neil Gaiman was waiting for us and greeted us at her door. Thursday we walked from her place through a beautiful park and into the old city. We found an amazing shop selling a huge range of prints, posters and postcards. There were some historical, some artistic, some humorous, and a lot from movies. The shop made us want to buy a heap of posters and redecorate when we got back. Not really practical though, so we made do with a few postcards to send home. For lunch we were recommended a particular Creperie from amongst about 100 in the cicy centre! We had a galette (which is a savoury ... read more

While waiting for a tram into Nantes central, we realised that we have left behind the delcious and expensive chocolate tiles we had bought near the Eifel tower in Paris! Enough to bring tears to your eyes (and it did - but that could have been the lack of sleep too). Our next hosts lived right in the centre of Nantes. We met Pascal and Sirius (the cat) at their home, and went for a wander to grab some tourist info. We went over to the bike hire place and booked a couple of bikes for the next few days so we could ride to the coast and back. Pascal's partner Leyla came home and cooked up a couple of delicious pizzas for us all to share. Sunday morning we packed up what we needed for ... read more

. This is the fourth ‘episode’ in another of 'our' travel experiences. The collective ‘episodes’ describe our journey from our arrival in Paris, France (from the 2nd week of May) and our journey to Floriade (Holland), then the remainder journey through northern and western France. In this part (week #4), we describe our journey around the coast of Brittany. As always, if you want to 'see' more detail in an accompanying picture, click it to enlarge. We've attached a few pics that give you a flavour of our journey, and some 'flow over' past the dialogue. You may need to manually go to the next page to see them. Sunday 3rd June - Brittany. In our last travelblog, we'd signalled we'd arrived at Brittany. Brittany - in French, Britagne - is reputed to be quite d ... read more

Not much news from yesterday, as we left Andorra and tried to boot it back up north as far as we could so we could catch our flight today. We drove from Andorra to Nantes, France which took us 9 hours of driving and 1 hour of waiting (in severe traffic because of an unknown incident). Today we were in a much better position. Being only an hour and a half away from the airport, we had ample time to explore the city we first came into on this trip: St. Malo. We figured that we had too much time on our hands, and didn't know what to expect in st malo (after all, it was Sunday and that's a quiet day). However, we were very pleasantly surprised. Our first order of business when we got ... read more

After arriving home from London, it was Halloween. I LOVE Halloween and dressing up, even though I am 21. I just really love, love, love Halloween. So I was a little bummed to be missing out this year. However, since my host family lives out in the suburbs, there were like 12 trick-or-treaters that came to the door. That's A LOT for France. These kids dont really know the rules of trick-or-treating though so I taught them how to say "betises ou bonbons" before they got candy. Then one of the other American students had a Halloween party. I didnt have a costume so I simply wore the random souvenirs I bought in Paris. It was a lot of fun and I was happy to share Halloween with not only Americans, but a lot of the ... read more
