Hey everyone, So to you all back in the states, Sundays might mean church, watching football, or doing that week's grocery shopping/errands, but here in France it is very different. Sunday is still the day for church for those who practice, but it could also mean sleeping in for others. I decided to sleep in this week, but will be mostly likely church shopping next week with Abbey. It was my first day free of any obligations to my school program, so it was nice to relax a little. At 11 we left the house to drive to Laurent's mom's house because it was her birthday on Wednesday, so they were having a big family meal on Sunday. It was a lovely countryside drive, only about an hour away. We arrived at an adorable house with ... read more

Hello all, So I'm a little behind on writing my blogs so I'm going to try to catch up. So Friday was sort of "Orientation" to the program so it was just some informative meetings and what not. But for lunch we had a very very French meal: Subway, Lay chips and Coca-Cola :) Haha. It did the job though. We had some more meetings in the afternoon and then we walked around the campus. It began to rain, and the it would be beautiful and then it would rain again. Apparently, that's how the weather is here most of the time. However, it's been a gorgeous weekend, so I'm not judging Bretagne yet. After the tour, Abbey (who lives on the same street I do) took the local transportation for the first time. She was ... read more

Oh la la! After three wondrous days in Paris, we finally were on our way to Rennes, which is about four hours south west of Paris by car or two hours by train. On our way to Rennes we stopped in Chartres where there is the most magnificent cathedral I've ever seen. Perhaps even better than Notre Dame. The exterior of the church is all intricately sculpted and all of the sculptures tell a story. Then on the inside, there are columns and stain glass galore. Once again, each stain glass window, and even each section of the window tells a story--either about who bought or made the window, the history at the time, or from the Bible. Malcolm was our tour guide and he has been giving tours for 55 years and has written 4 ... read more

Hi everyone, I start my "Tour de France" in Brittany to visit my wonderful niece, her mum and her grany. I spent 4 realy nice days between games with my niece, nice walks (when it was not raining!) and good meals. I did not take a lot of pictures, but there is a few just to show how Brittany is a realy lovely area of France.

After Adele's we headed up into the Brittany region to a small town called Pont-Aven. We were supposed to stay here for about two weeks but only ended up staying about a week as there wasn't much there to do. I wasn't looking foward that much to staying in Pont-Aven as the house mum had chosen to stay in had a straw roof or thatched rooves as they are called. But the house actually wasn't as bad as i thought it would be. It seemed a very arty town as almost every second shop was an art shop selling all sorts of paintings. The weather wasn't to good there either and it rained almost every day we were there. We didn't do much while staying there apart from visiting a few towns and watching the Tour ... read more

Pont Aven is an attractive town of artists. It was the home of Gauguin and a lot of his paintings are of the area. The town is now full of art studios – and tourists. It has a pretty little harbour and river with water wheels. A lot of the houses are white plaster with large grey stone window and door surrounds, and a few thatched roof houses like the one we’re staying in. (Ours is a bit more modern and up to date on the inside thankfully) The weather has not been the best for us, but I like to think it’s acclimatising us for home. We suspected it may be a bit wet here, as were warned by Adeles family, saw how green if was here, and every second stall at the market was ... read more

The Bourgoune Les Ceriselles in the Yonne on the banks of the Canal Niverais. A lovely setting with the area very reminiscent of home, rolling chalk downs and flint flecked houses. Next day we set off to the local market - it is a wonderful slice of French life. We fill our bag with all the things we didn’t get to sample in the Auberge the night before. I even get brave and try things from a stall ominously called La Tete du Vache…. Whilst I am at this stall, Simon takes Thomas to the boulangerie for a baguette and I am half way through the transaction when I see him sprinting towards the fountain with Thomas in his arms to dunk his foot - It turns out that one of the filthy ubiquitous smoking French ... read more

Our intrepid three were the first off the boat upon landing in Saint Malo at 8.20am this morning and headed straight onto the open road. There was a later stop for water and flapjack after 20 miles, however the stop was cut short due to a chilly breeze. The roads were excellent and undulating and the three stopped later for a small lukewarm coffee and shortly after this encountered their first road closure. Remaining unphased by this they took a diversion which directed them onto the motorway which was closely followed by a McDonald's lunch break. Finally the three arrived in Pon Rean at 3pm to find that the hotel did not have a booking for them. However they managed to secure two rooms overlooking the river for 58 euros and are relaxing in the french ... read more

Away in The Major Five years and five weeks ago we wandered wide eyed into the Heathrow arrivals hall in the manner of Hugh Grant in “Love Actually”, direct from Lima and our year out in South America to be met by Simon’s Dad, Dave. Bitten by the travel bug we had promised ourselves over numerous wine and steak dinners in the Southern Cone that life on the road was so good that we would aim for a “mini sabbatical” every 5 years or so to while away the ever increasing years until our retirements… A week later in April 2006 and we were back at our jobs, doing much the same things as we had done before we left…even we couldn’t predict that within 12 months of stepping off the plane we would leave London, ... read more
