Listen – what’s that sound of gnashing metal and whining cogs. Well it could be Peter at the wheel of the rental car getting reacquainted with driving on the other side of the road (fortunately this was not the case). In reality it is the supernova shift in gear as we arrive on the train from Paris into Quimper to start our Brittany adventures. Deep breath, release slowly, and into a very much slower pace of life in this extremely cute little town with its lichen covered walls and plants sprouting from every nook and cranny. After a bit of a wait at the station for a taxi to appear (things are a bit slow here indeed) we continue the cute theme as we install ourselves in our new lodgings – the tower suite; way posh! ... read more

Had an interesting night’s sleep a hundred yards from the main road in a Premier Classe Hotel, rumoured to be an ex prison, (might need to re-think the budget hotels!) but it was warm and dry and had secure parking and WiFi. Decided to forego the vending machine breakfast and head off to the next stop on the road. We decided not to do Bayeux as the museum wouldn’t be open on a Bank Holiday (it was the Bank Holiday for Pentecost in France) but headed instead for Mont-St-Michel to compare it to the Cornish equivalent. It seemed to be almost directly on our route but was actually an hour’s detour once we got off the main road onto minor country roads. This gave us chance to test the Porsche handling and, I am glad to ... read more

It’s a great job taking the tent down when it’s soaked!!!! We must have slept through the rain but woke to find we might be snug and dry but outside, although warm and very sunny, it was pretty wet. Having got everything away we headed off to Pouance to view the Castle. Woolly says – Another Castle, my life is so sweet, Prince Woolly rides again. A quick dash into Super U to restock the vital supplies (wine, beer, cider and bread!) and we followed the back roads through glorious sunshine. With the music playing and Jo and Ian telling me every time there is a field of cows – no idea why! We made good time and arrived with eyes peeled for signs. Pulling in through the castle gates (No way would Georgie have got ... read more

Francois had never married never even got near to it instead he became wedded to the local bar. There was nothing unusual in that since many both married and single men in Central Finistere spend the greater part of their life propping up the counter of their local bar. When Francois did eventually roll home from the Ty Anna is was usually to drink more and over the years he had perfected a simple routine, no matter how plastered he had been the night before he always managed to rise early and as the sun lifted itself over the neighbours hedge the front door would open and Francois would have a good cough, for inevitably being of true Breton stock he smoked and with this early morning wrenching cough came the vomiting. At this point one ... read more

We arrived in France on Wednesday 17th April, leaving Poole in grey skies and drizzly rain. The Brittany ferry was almost empty of passengers, and with hardly any pitch and roll, it was a very relaxed crossing! Include the full English breakfast with extra coffees; I would say it’s a great way to travel! We watched the sky turn blue and the sea, green, as we approached Cherbourg. Our first stop: Anse du Brick, was very welcoming, a large campsite built on the cliff overlooking the beach. Beautiful! The site’s facilities were without fault too: clean and modern, with a lovely pool. We, almost, successfully set up camp, there was a minor setback when we decided to try and ‘level’ the van using some blocks that go under the wheels, completely forgetting that we had fitted ... read more

The past few days had been tainted with that only too familiar sense of apprehension that accompanies the long trek back to the northern hemisphere. It was the long weekend, yet another public holiday and I was to be treated to lunch down at the Hayshed Hill Winery near Margaret River. Twenty or so miles south of Busselton we pulled off the road and Lara informed Charley and myself that she had organised a 60th birthday surprise helicopter ride down the coast to Cape Leeuwin. The chopper landed and the pilot still in short trousers and surely far too young to be in charge of such a machine asked us if we would like the doors off. We were to be three passengers and as only boys can we all gave a resounding “ah yeeeh, wicked ... read more

Even though I loved our accomodations in Le Mouton Blanc my only criticism would be the thinness of the walls. We were awoken earlier than scheduled by some buffoons banging and bashing their giant suitcases along the walls and into our door at 6 am. I had planned for us to sleep in a bit, go to breakfast at 8 am, and then be ready to make those last few purchases when the stores re-opened at 9. We would spend the rest of the morning here in Mont St Michel then drive into Brittany. Knowing that I could hear everything going on in the hall (blessedly it was a small hotel so there wasn't much other commotion) I knew anything I might be doing in the john could probably be heard out in the hallway. A ... read more
