Today, we will be going to tour a French boulangerie, escorted again by M. Garnier, Agathe’s Dad. This is the traditional French school half-day, so we will have the whole rest of the day with our host families. Since the blog is not allowing us to see the photos that I’m uploading, I’ve created a private Facebook page for us. Please find the link, below: https://www.facebook.com/groups/302304033796386/?ref=share Hopefully, everyone will gain access, regardless of whether you have a Facebook account. Worst case, you might have to create one. I will also send the link via email.... read more

Today, we started in front of la Vie Scolaire and M. Garnier was our parent guide. He is Agathe’s Dad. We took the bus#4 down to City Hall (la Mairie) and explored the market, had a coffee. We met Mr. Andy Fischer for a tour of Bayonne. We had pique-nique lunches from Largenté and some free time in Bayonne, then we walked to les Arènes. Mme. Rosa (Chloe's Mom) met us there. M. Baratchart and M. Lionel gave us a tour, then we returned to la Mairie, where we were received by the Deputy Mayor and welcomed with the Basque Dance of Honor, l’Aurresku, performed by Muskila Puskila. Our host siblings joined us and brought us home from there.... read more

Very quiet night on the site ("Camping Bel-Air!") but we were surprised to find in the morning that there WERE perfectly good gravel pitches. The owner had put us on a muddy one, then told us to park on the drive next to it because the ground was damp! Didn't fill up the water tank in the morning, because the only functional water tap was directly over the chemical loo point (and used for rinsing cassettes!) Short hop today. Still, stopped for a few bits from a supermarket, and to fill up the diesel, then found a working Aire to fill up the water tank. Arrived in the afternoon at our friends John and Scarlette, where we had a delicious roast lamb dinner, and Elizabeth fell in love with one of their cats! 3802km, so 84 today. ... read more

It's been seven weeks since we left our home in Les Sables, and apart from a few days staying with relatives this little van has been our home throughout that time - officially our longest motorhome trip ever! Another lovely peaceful night on a French Aire (for which we willing paid 3€ via the "honesty box" on the wall of the Mairie!). Our Austrian friend, Igor, had left later in the evening, so we had the place to ourselves. We'd arranged to meet Tony's sister in Bordeaux, so we headed for the car park in Allées de Chartres, where we knew motorhomes could park during the day (but weren't welcome overnight!). A fair trek for the morning, but we'd had a good breakfast (almost "brunch" - scrambled eggs on toast with lots of coffee). Setting the ... read more

Actual ALARM this morning (08.00), but didn't matter as we woke before it. We'd promised to meet a friend for lunch, just outside Brive, and even on toll roads it was going to take well over 2 hours - maybe longer as it was foggy when we set off, which would slow us down a lot. However, it cleared after a while, to give us bright sunshine. Quick stops to top up diesel, gas and caffeine (in reverse order) but otherwise just sailed along excellent roads all morning. 10€ toll for the bit of the A62, made us wonder what we'd have to pay for the much longer (150km) stretch of the A20! But as we came to the toll booth, we were flagged down by guys in hi-vis - "gilet jaune" protestors - who'd taken ... read more

Took a look around Marciac this morning, and had a coffee in the square. SO different from when we were last there, for the Tour de France, when they also had their Jazz Festival. Today the place was so quiet - and we were the only ones who'd spent the night on the Aire (which in summer had been packed with motorhomes). Eventually set off, via Super U for diesel and a few groceries. Later on, still made ANOTHER supermarket stop, as we'd forgotten several essentials! Anyway, rocked up at the Aire at Layrac, near Agen. The plan now is to visit a few people over the next few days (including Tony's sister, who's currently in Bordeaux), then head for home. We'll see! 119km today, making 3255 to date ... read more

I usually like to take a holiday before the winter but this year because of other obligations, we didn’t manage to get away until November. I have to admit that I have developed quite an obsession with internet weather sites. Now I can tell you definitively that they are mostly wrong. We were trying to choose between Italy and France. We leant toward France even though the weather in Italy was supposed to be much better. After a very hot summer we were ready for a bit of cooler weather and rain. What we actually got was unseasonably cold weather and quite a lot of rain and what Italy got was a national disaster with floods, storms and wind. We arrived in Bordeaux at 10 at night. It was about 2 degrees and we were wearing ... read more

COGNAC OCTOBER 4, 2018 Today we took a full day trip to Cognac. This is a designated region in France that is about a one hour drive Bourg. It is overcast as we leave Bourg and after one hour a light rain starts falling. We arrive at Remy Martin distillery. It is a very large complex. Remy Martin is the third largest cognac producer after Martell (#1),and Hennessy (#2). The production of cognac is a very complicated and lengthy process . They start with a white wine which is undrinkable (related to Italian trebbiano). They distill that twice until it is perfectly clear and the alcohol content is quite high about 90%. It then goes into new aging barrels. It stays in ... read more
