Super day out today. Apologies for rather a lot of photos but we went to so many super places it's too hard to chose what to show here so ended up with an overload. I highlighted Issigeac on the map as recommended yesterday as a lovely village to visit though it is most famed for a superb Sunday market and this was not Sunday. Then circled 2 more places along the route and off we went. Lovely drive even without the specific villages as this is such pretty countryside. Issigeac first. No market but that meant we could wander far more freely and take photos without having to avoid accidentally including anyone. We had a really lovely stroll around, there are some wonderful buildings, some dating back to the 12th century. In Alsace there are pretty ... read more

What a lovely day we have had. We were invited to visit friends for a long leisurely lunch at their gite in Lamonzie, near Bergerac. When I say friends we had never actually met but had been talking to each other on Facebook for 2 1/2 years as we are both sellers on the same online platform. Such a pleasure to find we got on really well and our husbands hit it off right away too. Lunch was on the patio, in the shade as it was Hot and lunch was perfect, salad and cheese and all sorts of lovely French nibbles. Then it was pool time and have to say the rest of the day was spent in and around the pool, swimming, chatting and keeping cool. Had a pretty amusing hour which I will ... read more

Phew. Still incredibly hot but a couple of degrees cooler than yesterday. Fortunately we don't need to cycle or walk in the full sunshine or even ride the scooter as we would have done on previous trips. Just trying to be sensible and limit the time we are fully exposed to the sun as it really is lethally hot. We first of all visited Limeuil which is just over the bridge across the Dordogne. On a cooler day we might well have walked there but far cooler in Smart Arse. Was amused to instruct a Frenchman, in French, on how to get the car park machine to accept his payment. My French is definitely coming back to be a bit at a time ? We have been to Limeuil before and would have climbed to the ... read more

Today we visited Bergerac. We have stopped off here for an hour when driving past in the motorhome some years ago but never explored properly so a must for a day out today. Stifling hot from the moment we got up and in fact temperature went to at least 42 degrees at one point which is over 100 F. A pleasant drive, 45 minutes or so and once in town we followed signs to a carpark. Delighted to find outselves under cover and pretty close to the historical old centre. Then we explored first of all near the cathedral where there was a market, always lovely for a stroll round. Instead of bunting the norm now in this area seems to be big plastic decorations, brightly coloured, butterflies, flowers. It looks absolutely delightful strung along in ... read more

All packed up and on the way before 10am. The pittch behind ours had left really early which was handy as it gave us lots of space to manoevre. First of all the trailer onto the moho towbar and then Smart Arse up the trailer's little ramps all ready to follow faithfully behind. We headed due south first of all and the traffic was quite heavy as had to use the major roads to get out of and past La Rochelle but we turned East towards Cognac and the landscape changed to far more interesting than the very flat area immmediately behind the coast. We have surely driven some of this route before as have certainly headed for Angouleme before. Perigeux we thought might be interesting and we couldn't remember being through before but though there ... read more

**Let me apologize for the delays in posting. Its been hectic and often there isn't a good connection. I will post more photos when I have a better connection Last night I slept well, but in spurts, waking up every few hours. At about 6:30am, Manoli woke me up and we started packing. We had to be out of our room by 8am, but the host said we could leave our backpacks by the door as long as we wanted. We were all packed and ready to go soon after 7am. We stuffed our lightweight backpack with the heavier, less needed stuff, put 8 Euros in the envelope, and left it by the door. We'd decided to leave casually around 8:30, so we walked into town, looking for a cafe. We'd about given up, when we ... read more

I will post more photos when I have a better connection Today we going to travel from Paris to Saint Jean Pied de Port in southern France. This is where we start, and many other people start, the Camino de Santiago. We already had our train tickets, all the way to Saint Jean. But first, we had to get to the train station. We got up, did our business, packed up the backpacks, and headed to the metro station. Fortunately, we didn't have to worry about getting our deposit back, since my wife had taken care of it the night before. We walked down to the metro station Le Nationale, the same one we'd used yesterday to see ... read more

Have you ever wondered what a second wine is in Bordeaux? To make its grand vin, or best wine, a top Bordeaux château will blend together only its very finest lots of wine, usually from the most well-sited vineyard plots and the oldest vines. What happens to all the other lots? In many cases, the château makes a second wine, which will have its own brand name and its own distinct label. (It’s important to note here that a second wine is not the same as a Second Growth.) Usually made by the same winemaker in essentially the same manner as the grand vin, the second wine will be less expensive, although alas, not inexpensive (several cost more than $100 a bottle). Still, for many savvy wine drinkers, buying second wines is ... read more
