Our trip started off on Sunday with a night in Bacchus Marsh enjoying pizza and red wine – Banks Thargo and Rymill, of course - with our gorgeous friends, Michael and Yoshiko and their fabulous children! We drove to Melbourne on Monday morning to catch our flight to Singapore. Our flights to Singapore, Frankfurt and Vienna were smooth and without incident although the security at Frankfurt was tough…we had to place the tissues from our pockets into the trays for inspection! It’s all a bit daunting for the weary traveller but we eventually booked in to our hotel in Vienna and rediscovered the joys of soap and water after 24 hours without! We had a quick walk into Vienna’s main square and a bit of a look around but decided we’d save it until the next ... read more

Our second day is Salzburg started out with us leaving Salzburg and traveling to Germany to the Berchtesgaden region for a visit to Hitler's Eagle's Nest. It was a beautiful sunny day to journey into the Bavarian Alps and climb to a mountain top. On the way we passed several locations where parts of the Sound of Music were filmed, including the bridge the children danced across singing and the home where the outside scenes. In the photo you can see the wall alongside which Maria sang the song "I Have Confidence In Me." Upon reaching Eagle's Nest we walked through a tunnel to reach the elevator to the top. After a few minutes for our guide to talk about the building we had time to explore the mountain on which Eagle's Nest is perched. A ... read more

Today was a travel day as we boarded our bus to head west to Salzburg. We started out traveling to Krems to board a riverboat to travel along part of the Danube River. We passed grape vineyards in Wachau Valley and passed the town of Durnstein where high on the hill is Durnstein Castle the place where Richard the Lionhearted was held captive. We disembarked at Weissenkirchen joining our bus driver once again to continue our journey. Just outside of Salzburg we stopped at Mondsee to visit the church where the wedding scene in the Sound of Music was filmed. The interior of St. Michael's Church is quite beautiful. We also got to see the beautiful Lake Mondsee. After arriving at Salzburg, we got settled in our room and then proceeded on a walking tour of ... read more

After finally getting to sleep following a full day of travel, it was up and out early to begin our tour of Vienna. We were on the bus by 7:40 am and at Schonbrunn Palace by 8 am. Great timing by our tour director had us entering the palace in the cool of the morning, making us the first group walking through. No crowds and no heat. After our tour guide gave us a thorough history of Maria Theresa who lived in the palace bearing 16 children while ruling Austria, we had a brief time to visit the gardens behind the palace. After leaving the Schonbrunn, we drove through Vienna passing many local landmarks and seeing how the residents live. Most residents live in apartment buildings some of which are ornate. We also passed government buildings, ... read more

We left Charlotte on Sunday July 21st to journey to Vienna, Austria to start a 10 day tour of Austria and Switzerland. The three flights to arrive at our final destination were relatively smooth and each flight arrived early. Leaving Charlotte at 3 p.m. we landed in Vienna at 1:25 p.m. on Monday, July 22. We are traveling with Globus Tours and expected to wait until 3:30 for our pick-up, but to our delight our tour director was at the airport and we were soon on our way to our hotel. After checking into our hotel we grabbed our cameras and headed out to the Botanical Gardens and the Belvedere built as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy. The grounds are decorated with many Baroque statues, gardens, fountains and waterfalls. After exploring the area, ... read more

Apologies to those of you have already read this bit. I decided to split the last one into two but forgot to delete this text from the last one. The photos however are different and correspond to this blog. _------------_-----------_------------_-----------_------------_-------- Saturday 13th July Our next stop was the Austrian Tyrol. As we drove along, the scenery changed from tall grey craggy mountain tops to high, grassy peaks changing to rock at the very tops, but just as beautiful in their own way and equally as high. Our guest house in the Tyrol was again a traditional wooden alpine house with bright red flowers flowing over from multiple balconies. Close by was a fantastic restaurant we could just walk to and eat amazing food cooked especially for us. Petra the owner of the guesthouse informed us that ... read more

Our five days in Breganze were at an end and it was time to start the long journey home. First stop were the Dolomites, Italy. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking with the tall craggy grey mountains towering up against the clear, deep blue sky. Every turn of the road brought on a new amazing view. The camera was on overtime and the journey took much longer as we were constantly stopping by the roadside to take photos. We stayed in a small traditional guest house the first night set in the tranquil little village of San Vito di Cadore. Next day we moved further along on the long road home. After another day exploring the area we stopped off at Cortina De Ampezzo where the winter olympics had been held in 1956. There was still evidence ... read more

16th June to 21stJune We came on a three week holiday to Slovenia six years ago in our first campervan. It was during that trip that I decided to take the leap from having a permanent job to picking up ad hoc work in between doing some travelling. I loved Slovenia then and being back has reminded me why. The scenery is stunning everywhere you look. Even the more industrial towns look beautiful sitting in lush green valleys with a backdrop of wooded hills and grey jagged mountain peaks. We spent our first couple of nights in Slovenia in Camping Menina in Varpolje, east of the Julian Alps. We spent a day doing some cycling through picturesque villages before moving on to Camp Danica at Bohinjska Bistrica. It was a bit of a revelation when realised ... read more

It is very unlike us to travel at such a cracking pace. We like rest days between busy days but this was an exception as after a late night we were up at 6am getting ready for our day trip by bus to Vienna. It had not really been in our itinerary until we realized just how close Vienna was to Bratislava. In a way we were dreading it,  because it felt overwhelming and exhausting but it was too good an oportunity to visit such a famous city that we had never visited before. Vienna is only 1 and 1/2 hours away from Bratislava by bus, stopping at Vienna airport along the way. The Monday morning bus was fairly full with weary ice hockey fans travelling back home after the World Championships final on the Sunday ... read more
