Europe » Austria » Salzburg October 13th 1978

In October 1978 Linda and Bob attended a weekend church retreat with Steve and Kay and their boys in Berchtesgaden, in the German Alps just across the border from Salzburg, Austria. We stayed at another AFRC resort, the General Walker Hotel, which was used by Hitler’s elite guard force when he stayed here. We took a tour of the bunkers under the hotel. We also explored the surrounding countryside, to include the salt mines, the Ramsau church, and the Konigseesee, where we took an electric boat to an onion domed chapel on the far end. The mountains were those seen in the opening scene of the “Sound of Music,” and were just so beautiful with the first snowfall of the season. We also went to Salzburg to see where the "Sound of Music" was filmed.... read more

Every January it was a tradition for the office to take a weeklong all inclusive ski trip to Erpfendorf, Austria, near St Johann and Kitzbuhl. On Saturday we would drive directly there and checked into the Larchenhof Hotel. Nan and Stacey, our neighbors from Glan Munchweiller, along with their kids Lowell and Allison, would convoy with us. Sunday morning after breakfast we were divided into groups by level of experience. Linda and I were grouped with the beginners. We proceeded to the bunny slope to learn how to snow plow and schuss. That was pretty much how we spent the rest of the day. The second day we were subdivided into slow beginners and fast beginners. This is when Linda and I were split up. The fast beginners then went to the top of the hill ... read more

Europe » Austria July 30th 1974

We were up early due to a lousy night’s sleep, attributed to the van being parked on an angle on the side of the road – lesson learnt! We made the last few kilometres to the Polish-Czech border by 9am, where we had a relatively hassle free crossing, although it took some time to persuade them to change zlotys back to US dollars. We were away again before 11am in bright sunshine, and we weaved our way through some beautiful mountain scenery as we descended from the Tatra Mountains. The roads were poor, but there were some great rock formations up high along with many attractive little villages (each with its own church) tucked away in the hollows. Rip-off petrol prices, and low octane fuel to boot, caused us to change our planned route (we were ... read more

Hi everyone. I am sitting doing this before I go to a performance of Strauss and Mozart music at the Vienna State Opera.{as you do} Vienna is an amazing city .The architecture is just like the top end of Collins st. only magnified many times. We are docked about ten minutes from town centre along the Danube which is definitely not blue today. There is a lot of shipping and polution is starting to set in but it still has a romantic notion about it. Every day we eat food from the country that we are in and today the highlight is Sacher Torte. After an early meal we are getting a bus into town to the Vienna state opera house which I believe is floodlit rather spectacularly.I hope my photos do it justice. One of ... read more
