We spent the day in Salzburg at the Salt Mines. They were a lot of fun. You have to dress up like a moron, but the big slide inside the mine was fun! F.Y.I. It is a salt mine, so if you touch the walls, don't put your fingers in your mouth. Sadly I learned this the hard way. Don't ask me why I had my fingers in my mouth. All I know is that it didn't taste good.... read more

We visited Heidelberg castle. The view was beautiful, but we have all begun to drag. There was no recovery from the jet lag, followed by nights of partying. It has been a rough trip so far, but still a lot of fun. That night we took it easy and had a cookout in a small town in the alps of Austria. It was great just to go grocery shopping and relax, cook out and drink some wine. ... read more

As the small train approaches the magnificent culture Mecca of Europe, I gather my things and I take note at how amazing the architecture changes in just a one-hour train ride out of an old satellite nation into Western Europe. As the train comes to a halt inside Sudbahnhof, my travels continue. Austria has a population of just over 8 million, Vienna is the capital, and music, art and architecture reach extravagant in Salzburg. A wonderful range of outdoor activities- skiing is some of the best in the world is what Austria is known for. It borders the countries of Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Liechtenstein, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland making it an easy stop. I had a bit of a panic attack "I am in a far off land and want my own bed and ... read more

One of the more serious drawbacks to modern digital camera technology is that the memory sticks have been known “without notice” to crash or dump digital image data. This is what happened to us and this explains why the lack of pictures on this journal entry. We inexplicably lost many of our travel images from Germany and all images of Austria. Read on though, for this is a very interesting part of our trip. From Bacharach we headed south to Rothenburg (ROE-ten-burg), Germany’s best preserved walled town. We spent the night at a classy new hotel in an old building; The Hotel Gerberhaus. After an early dinner of delicious wiener schnitzel, we took the Night Watchman’s tour (definately a must do when in Rothenburg) of the city walls and afterwards we went "to hell”. When asking ... read more

Although Zurich was a good start to assimilate our Italian customary into German, entering Germany via Austria is a different story. Flash back at the statas a couple month prior our European trip, we purchased our six-day Eurorail tickets that only allow us to visit five countries: Italy, Switzerland, Germany, the Benelux (Belgium/the Netherlands/Luxembourg), and France. The most direct route from Zürich to München is passing around a lake which borders Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, thus we need to enter Austria, one of the countries NOT listed on our tickets. We don't have any other alternatives but purchasing an additional ticket for our ten-minute ride passing Austria. The good thing about rerouting via Austria is that we are entering back EU from Switzerland via Austria; and this cheery plump Austrian immigration officer stamped our passports with ... read more

beautiful country! reminded us of sound of music - rolling hills, green forests, lakes, etc. it wasnàt as grand as other palces, but still very charming. it was nice and calm, clean, and pleasant. we did, however, see awesome cathedrals like st. james and wilorn (sp?) then we also kicked it in the main square where emporer maximilian I sat in his balcony with a golden roof, and watched his knights joust below him. ... read more

Staying in a youth hostel is sometimes the most wonderful way of travelling, mostly because of the people you meet. Schwedenhaus (The Swedish House!) in Innsbruck is of the nicer kind. Right on the river Inn, at the foot of the mountains. Wonderful. I'm stuffed in to a room with one Italian guy and one German dude. The Italian speaks very little English. With a mix of Italian/Spanish/English I am able to establish that he's on his way back to Italy from a little Alp vacation. The German speaks very little English. Slightly easier for him to get around in German-speaking Austria though...I manage to establish that he's on his way to hitch-hike back to Dresden, in time for the spring semester. The Italian and the German decide to initiate a conversation. They have no common ... read more

The bar is not bad. Standard interior, not overly fancy, but certainly not shabby. The crowd is mature - in the sense that the average person graduated high school long time ago - and trendy/artsy, if that is a legitimate combination. We get a corner table. A perfect spot, we're able to overlook the whole field. Complete control. The beer is good, German/Austrian or something. Works for me... The company is good, brains and beauty. Still, there's something in the air. Not tension, hate, love, or anything to that effect. Something more tangible. Smoke. Not cigarette smoke. This substance irritates my eyes. Cigarette smoke does not. Having no sense of smell, I have to guess. Considering the fact that it would take a lot of something to get to someone's eyes, and the fact that we're ... read more

Wednesday (Temp. -4deg. No snow!) Mum rang for Christmas at 8am waking us up. Spoke to Mum, Dad, Shane, Michelle, A. Glor, Leon, Grant, Nan & Bevan. After breakfast Greg & Trish rang. Went for walk at 10am to Stadtpark, beautiful snowy & ice-covered lake. Not many people out at first but lots of people around St Stephen's Cathedral & a few souvenir shops open. Bought another bust of Beethoven. Had a coffee at McDonald's . Lovely day out, no crowds, very pleasant. Back to hotel at 1pm. Made our own lunch, cheese & ham & salami rolls. Used computer in lobby to check email, 2Euro60 for 20mins. Sat in lobby & had a drink, entertained by nosy South African woman. Back to room for beer, weird peanut chips & rolls again for dinner. MERRY CHRISTMAS. ... read more
