Tuesday (Temp. -2deg. Overcast) Lovely breakfast room, pink tablecloths (& pink decorations on Christmas tree in lobby!) Rugged up in 5 layers including thermals. Walked along MariahilferStrasse, main shopping street to old city & beautiful buildings. Vienna is the most beautiful city we've seen. Snow all over ground in old city, people very normal. Bought a bust of Mozart. Too cold to really appreciate buildings, tagged along behind a few tour groups (lots of them!). Saw horse drawn buggies. Snowed very lightly on us. Went into St Stephen's Cathedral and christkindlmarkt at old town hall. Didn't stay out long, too cold! Back to hotel at 12:45pm, had a coffee & beer at bar to thaw out. Went to supermarket to stock up for today & tomorrow (Christmas day). We were given a brochure for concerts tonight ... read more

Monday (Overcast, rain, snow) After breakfast went to supermarket, not open, no snacks for train ride. Caught train at 9:26am, got our own private cabin, 6 seats to ourselves. Weather very bleak, couldn't even see mountains for the clouds. German landscape pretty dull. Austria beautiful, neat, tidy, snow everywhere, like a Winter Wonderland. Got to Vienna 2:05pm, very cold & snow on the ground! Found hotel (Anatol Hotel) not far from station, 4 star, very nice. Checked in, went to supermarket for food. Stayed in our room & ate like little pigs. Didn't go back out, too cold. Played dots & dashes 'til Rob gave up & once again watched Eurosports, CNN & 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' in German!... read more

Bad Gastein is a comfortable resort town that works well for those on a backpacking circuit who just want to be in the mountains and do day hikes. It's always a bit defeating to get to take a long hike to the top of a mountain only to see ski lifts, but the views were impressive and the air was fresh.... read more

Well it seems most of my travelling is done when it is very cold. This was also the case on my first trip to Vienna. Like all my trips there is usually a reason why I end up going to one place or the other. This trip was no different. It started because we needed a place to go and see while Mike was in Germany. No sooner had he arrived than we were out of work. This left us free to go and do whatever we wanted for the two weeks he was there. Dave from the Old Dublin used to work in a place called Molly Darcy's in Vienna. As such he had been telling us all to go and check it out since he arrived in Germany around when we did. Did any ... read more

In order to find out if two people are good partners, they should be forced to go from train station to train station at strange hours where no buses or English language or hotel rooms are available. We left London after a week of sleeping on Martin's floor (not too bad, really) and took the train to Dover, then the ferry to Calais, France. We were fortunate enough to be able to see the delicate light of the sunset reflect off the famous White Cliffs which jut right down into the sea. When we arrived in Calais, however, we had missed the last bus to the train station. We asked a ticket agent what we should do and he generously offered use of the floor space until 5am. Since we were prepared with foam mats and ... read more
