With another hangover hanging over us, we decided it was time to hit the beach; Monterrico. We decided not to take the chicken buses (due to the hangover..) and let the kind Doña Mercdes of Hotel Cafetin organize a shuttle for us. In Monterrico life is simple; tranquilo. The main "street" is a muddy/sandy PATH with all kinds of animals; pígs (of all sizes and colours), chicken, dog-pig mixes, snakes, cats, normal dogs. Apart from the animals the place seemed deserted. We did however, find a very nice place to stay, right at the beach! It is a small place (only one dorm for 5 and two doubles) with a bar run by a very nice young guatemalan couple. It is next to Johnny's, the backpacker-nest. It is called El Caracol and we recommend it highly. ... read more

November 3, 2005 (Miraflores Locks, Panama) Sean: Today we went to Miraflores Locks, the first (from the Pacific side) in a series of three sets of locks that enable ships to bypass sailing around South America in order to get commerce from the Pacific to the Atlantic (and vice versa). At Miraflores there are two locks and just a short distance away at Pedro Miguel is another lock. These three together raise the ships up to the level of Gatun Lake where they travel to the other side of the country to be lowered again through three locks at the Gatun Locks. Miraflores has the big visitor’s center where you can stand out on the viewing platform, then wander through the museum. The museum was nice, written in both Spanish and English, and it covered the ... read more

HOLA!!! WELL I FINALLY MADE IT IN TO MONTEVERDE AFTER A LONG 5 HOUR BUS RIDE INTO THE COULDS. AND WHEN I SAY CLOUDS I MEAN CLOUDS. I WAS SO AMAZED BY THEM AND HOW CLOSE THEY SEEMED. THE ROADS ARE VERY NARROW GOING UP INTO THE HILLS. AND PLUS IT WAS DARK AND I COULDN'T SEE ANYTHING OOH HOW SCARY!!!! I CHECKED INTO HOTEL CAMINO VERDE AND PLANNED SOME ACTIVITIES FOR MY FIRST FULL DAY IN MONTEVERDE. I SHEDULED A TOUR AT THE SANTA ELENA RAINFOREST @630AM. WHEN I WOKE UP IT WAS POURING RAIN. THE BUS WAS SCHEDULE FOR PICK UP AT 630, BUT IT WAS MORE LIKE 700. AT THE RAINFOREST THERE ARE SEVERAL DIFFERENT TRAILS YOU CAN TAKE, BUT DUE TO THE RAIN WE COULDN'T TAKE THE LONG HIKE!!! AND ALSO DUE ... read more

Today we arrived in St. Thomas. It was so beautiful there. We took a skyride to Paradise Point, which is 700 feet above sea level. There was a great view of the harbor from up there. After we rode back down, we decided to head out to the beach. We heard that the beach at Magens Bay was a really beautiful beach, so we took a cab there. The cab driver was not a very good driver. He was eating the same time he was driving. We thought for sure he was going to crash the car. The beach was really beautiful, and it wasn't crowded, which was nice. We decided to leave as the sun was starting to set because the bugs were starting to come out. We found a little shuttle bus that would ... read more

November 1, 2005 (Panama City, Panama) Sean: I’ve wanted to come to this country ever since I first heard Van Halen sing that refrain. I never understood the connection between the lyrics and the chorus though. But they were Capital B-I-G Rock and Roll stars and I was some punk kid listening to my cool, older brother’s cassette tapes, so who was I to question these powerful and all knowing gods? It must’ve meant something otherwise why would anyone listen to a bunch of grown men innocuously stringing words together and then periodically - for still no obvious discernable reason - yelling out the name of a random Central American country. It didn’t make sense, but then again it’s not like the members of the band were going out and buying my albums. And that was ... read more

Guatemala...I love it...

In honor of the fact that Nancy and I are now actively pursing higher education in the language of Patois, I thought it would only be fitting to share my enlightened view with everyone out there. Now, repeat after me: "Gwan a ya yaad" - Go home. Used repeatedly throughout the day, either to tell someone, literally, to go home, or as a joke between friends; ie - Nancy tells me I smell, I tell Nancy "Gwan a ya yaad." "Heveryting cris" - It's cool; it's all good. Usually used as a response to "How are you?" "A do a dem" - As in..."Me look affa Magon and Nancy, ave ya see a do a dem?" I'm looking for Meaghan and Nancy, have you seen the two of them? "Whey ya gwan?" - Where are you ... read more

Copan is just across the border in Honduras. It's in adorable little town. Together with 2 Canadian boys I roam around in the streets and visit the ruins. Copan is not a very large site, but it's known for being more artistic. It has a basket ball court, and it was played 5 against 5. You can use every body part except your head, feet or hands. If you win, the best player gets rewarded with death: he'll go to a place with 72 virgins! Copan brings me some animal encounters, from weird tailless 'rats' (agouti), to bright macaws, to a gekko attack in the middle of the night. The last one was hilarious: something moving around in my hair woke me up, I grabbed it, threw it on the end of my bed, screamed and ... read more
