Well we signed up for a trip today to see the Tikal ruins. For more information on these Id suggest you just google it, but in the meantime I will recount our delightful trip in the jungle. We woke up at 4:30 AM in Flores, so that we could catch our bus at 5am. This was to get to the ruins for sunrise, but holdups and late people prevented that from happening. The bus was packed, no room at all so numbness in my more lengthy limbs occured quickly but more pleasantly than expected. Then this guy beside me fell asleep on my shoulder. I wasnt happy about that, I guess I was just tired but it really irritated me. As it turned out he fell asleep beside me again on the way back home so ... read more

(sorry it's a bit of a long one) Wandering around Belize City, it's surprisingly hard to find anything you want. For example, finding a tourist information place was an hour's quest that eventually failed, all the places having moved countless times in recent years so that not even locals know where they are. Nevertheless, although slightly irritating from a personal perspective, this is a prime example highlighting what a dynamic and vibrant place this small city is, and one that is constantly developing and changing. After spending about 30 hours travelling (and what felt like a similar length of time sleeping once here), from Toronto, through Houston's "we do not take highly to persons joking about any act of security. You will be arrested" airport, I was welcomed into Belize with a huge 'Subway' billboard. At ... read more

Buenos Tardes! Well I just got back from climbing Pacaya, an active volcano about 1 and half hours or so out of Antigua. It was quite the journey! It took about two hours to get up, and all though that does´t seem like a long time, when you are climbing straight up it's quite the workout. It was especially hard hiking it in my jean skirt! I took all my dirty laundry to the laundromat yesterday and forgot to take my jeans out of the bag so I could wear them today. It was something like 7 km up or may be that was in total, I don't remember. It wasn't actually too bad for the first while but once you got to the final part towards the hole up top, it was very steep. I ... read more

Well we did it... finally the first country NONE of us have been too. We woke up at 6am and the goof that picked us up demanded 700 more pesos. We argued and cursed and told him to phone the guy at the bar we bought the tickets from (seriously) we drove into Palenque and it was "miraculously" sorted out. Good. Done with Mexico! We drove for awhile to an amazing breakfast. Did I mention it was an amazing breakfast? Ok let me explain this, back a few hours prior I was woke up at 5:30 AM from the alarm on my watch and was taken from a beautiful dream involving the most delicious home made breakfast that Dad made me, garlic hash browns, that special bacon with honey and mustard baked in the oven, scrambled ... read more

The past 2 days have been at sea. We haven't done too much. We watched a soccer game between the crew and the guests. The crew were obviously going to win. They had people from countries who actually play soccer on a regular basis, and the guests mainly had Americans who knew how to play the game, but were not all that great. It was pretty fun to watch. We also tried our luck at the slot machines in the casino, but ended up losing all the money that we started playing with. Thankfully, we know we have no luck, so we only ended up wasting about $20.... read more

I finally got to spend one night out of the convent. I’m very gracious to the four Jamaican guys (all who spend lots of time at St. Pius) who took Meaghan and I to our first Jamaican party. We met them at St. Pius and then drove to a two-story building near New Kingston to commence the evening. According to most of the Jamaicans that we have talked to, most Jamaican parties don’t really get going until around 2:00 AM. Here we were out at 12:00 am and the party was, well wasn’t hopping. We paid $150 (US$2ish) to go to the rooftop where there was a DJ. A DJ here actually spins, and interrupts songs to add some lyrics or beat of his own. I really enjoyed getting to see the party to begin. After ... read more

GREETING EVERYONE!!!! SO YES I HAVE TO BACK IT UP A COUPLE OF DAYS. ON THURSDAY MY LAST DAY IN MONTEVERDE ENDED IN THE MOST AMAZING WAY. I DID THE CANOPY TOUR WHICH IS MORE COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE ZIP LINE. LET ME SAY THAT I ALMOST BACKED OUT OF IT BECAUSE OF THE RAIN AND I WAS A BIT SCARED. THE TWO GUIDES CARLOS AND MELBE WERE SO NICE AND COMFORTING THAT I WENT ON AHEAD. AND PLUS I WAS ABLE TO TAKE MY TIME BECAUSE I WAS THE ONLY ONE ON THE TOUR. I AM SO GLAD THAT I DID NOT LET MY FEAR GET THE BEST OF ME. BEING UP THAT HIGH IN AIR WAS SO AMAZING AND BREATHTAKING. ON FRIDAY I LEFT FOR LA FORTUNA TO SEE THE ARENAL VOLCANO AND THE ... read more

This blog entry does not have a theme—not that any of my other blog entries have had themes—rather, it is a collection of ideas or items that I have noticed this past week. PLEASE NOTE: I have a new email address: ANDREW4CR@GMAIL.COM More on the people… I again this week have focused my thoughts on the people who live around me, mostly by observing and wondering what they are thinking, and of course, what they think of me. I have come up with a few conclusions this week. I don’t know how accurate my conclusions are, and certainly others’ opinions will differ, though one’s impressions cannot easily be judged I suppose. In the greater San Ramon area where I live, there seems to be something more innocent about the people here, particularly the younger people—guys and ... read more

St. Maarten is an island that is owned by the French and by the Dutch. St. Maarten is the Dutch side, and St. Martin is the French side. Our ship docked on the Dutch side, but we wanted to see both sides of the island. We decided to go on a bus tour that would take us all around the island. Our first stop on the tour was Orient Beach, which is a nude beach because it is on the French side. Thankfully, we didn't see any nude people when we were there. Another stop on our tour was at a shopping area on the French side. We had to be back at the bus at a certain time to leave and continue on our tour. We were back in time, but one couple on our ... read more
