Day1 What a nice flight. West Jet to LA, nice plane, but only 25 (give or take a few) people on the flight - SWEET! I got some sleep on the flight, poor George couldn't fall asleep. We got to LA no problem. I must say it's a little colder here than I expected (about 19C in the day time). Day 2 Just wanted to give you all a short hello and a short update. We are in LA, we came to visit because my uncle and aunt just had a baby boy. Adam Lorek is a beautiful 2.7kg baby. Good news he is finally coming home tomorrow after spending 2 weeks in the hospital due to being premature. I will add a photo of the baby soon. We are just relaxing and site seeing until ... read more

We arrived yesterday in Palenque and it was a nice surprise when we got of the bus to see that Palenque is much warmer than San Cristóbal. When we got off after a 5hrs bus ride we were confronted by the hot and humid rainforest climate. We started looking for a place to stay and finally found one..with a fan:) We decided not to pay double price for air con, thought the fan would be enough. Me and Mette slept well that night, but Anna had to get up to turn off the fan that was on max..Only to notice that it was either max or nothing at all.. The last option meant that she felt like she couldn´t breathe, so she turned it on again.. When Mette woke up she said it was raining heavily ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Nicaragua October 25th 2005

An hour into Nicaragua and we came across our first problem - no bridge. We were attempting to satisfy the latest phase of Rachel's seemingly insatiable appetite for all things "local" and "crafty", by visiting a pottery co-operative in the village of Ducuale Grande. After a few miles of dirt road we saw the remains of what was once the only safe way to cross the river, until the fringes of hurricane Stan had played with it. The only way was to ford so I took all the necessary precautions that any self respecting over-lander would; asked the locals where best to cross, checked the entry and exit points, checked the flow rate, estimated the depth...finally I suggested that the vehicle behind us should go first. The pottery was an interesting place where a number of ... read more

The trip to the San Blas is pretty uneventful. Most of the time we have light SW winds, yup right on the bow. Everyone swears this is unusual for this area, but I'm starting to think its just me. We did get about 6 hours of really fun sailing in about 15-20 knots winds on a close reach (I'm sure that term means something to someone) Of course all of this happens while I'm not on watch and am trying to sleep on the left side of the boat while its heeled over on its right side...(read, I keep falling out of bed). Bing I hope you appreciate the incorrect use of right and left, that is just for you. So what are the San Blas islands. They are an archipelago of islands off the SE ... read more

First of all sorry for not posting anything over the last 3 or 4 days as I know some were worried about Wilma. But that was the reason I wasn't able to write. Last Friday I met up with my tour group to start our trip through Central America. We met up in Antigua and departed on Saturday for Honduras. The group seems to be good so far. It's comprised of people from England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and America...12 girls and 6 guys. We left Antigua and headed to the Copan Ruins. The ruins were pretty impressive to see. It's hard to believe that these people were able to build such sophisticated and complex cities with none of the modern day instruments we have. We stayed in the neighbouring town of Copan Ruinas for ... read more

I fear say my eyes are injured. Not physically, but emotionally, my eyes are scarred by what Jamaicans think is “the new black”. The next big thing. The greatest fashion accessory since sliced bread. (Not that sliced bread is a fashion accessory….unless you’re a toaster. Or Nutella. Mmmmm…Nutella.) I’m talking about…say it with me now….KNEE-LENGTH MESH TANKTOPS. It’s sad, really, that so many people could be so grievously mistaken about what is actually fashionable. It calls to mind that heartbreaking decade of the 1980s, when we rolled our tapered jeans around our ankles and tied our tshirts in knots on our waists and pulled our ponytails to the side of our heads. Oh, but wait! Even through all that travesty we didn’t wear knee-length mesh tanktops. It seems we were smart enough to avoid making such ... read more

I just had to write a quick blog update tonight before this highly exciting information left my brain! Oh, Osita! Tonight I went outside to give Osita and Reina their “mid-evening” snack (usually a dog biscuit), and found Reina immediately perched by our back door. However, Osita was not to be found and calling her did not bring her out of wherever she was. I waited a few minutes, then looked around the house calling her name repeatedly and still could not find her. Finally, I went to the back door where Reina was anxiously awaiting her treat and alas, there is Osita lumbering out of the dog pen. I was surprised because it is impossible to get them in the dog pen in the first place. So, I petted Osita on the back and as ... read more

My first week of work has completed, and today, Monday, October 17, 2005 is National Heroes Day (also Kelsey’s birthday) in Jamaica. This means that it is a holiday weekend and there is no school today! Sr. Sophia, Meaghan and I had planned to make our way to the Kingston Beach however; Mother Nature had another plan for us today. I didn’t sleep well last night, our dog, George, began yelping around 2am. I figured the neighborhood cats were in our yard and he couldn’t chase them since he was chained up. Around 4:30 AM, I was awakened by George again and looked out my window to find George being enveloped by water. Mind you, it is the rainy season and it rains every day, but it has rained almost continuously all weekend. So, early this ... read more
