I will work my way back from today, Sunday, through much of a busy few weeks and back again to Sunday! Sunrise/breakfast…. Today I woke up at 5:30am—definitely early for me! However, the sun was coming up and there was barely a cloud in the sky. What a bright crisp morning it was here! Makes the move here with all of the trials and tribulations (more about that later) worth it! This has been a very busy few weeks with non-stop guests every day, touring around, finalizing some of the work around the house and finally settling into a routine. I was very happy to learn that one of our guests this past week actually found out about us from one of the flyers I put up at the English language bookstore, 7th Street Books, in ... read more

Well I had received several emails from home asking whether I was back from the expedition safe and sound, so rest easy because I´m OK. I had some trouble publishing my last entries before departing for the jungle so I hope everyone read those OK. Sorry to all my devoted readers who are struggling with my spelling mistakes, I blame my lack of formal education, these keyboards, lack of Outlook for spell checking and time constraints on the pay computers. I´m not sure who sent the anonymous comment about the filming location of Raiders of the Lost Ark (which is in Tikal thanks) but I didn´t opt to pay a tour guide so no, I did not know that. So, let´s talk about the expedition for awhile. We left last Monday morning at 6:30 even though ... read more

We're stuck on an island... Today is sunday, and we've been here on Utila for over a week now, the longest time we've continuously spent in one place so far. We've done everything we wanted to do here: Tamara got her 6 dives, Mette and Anna have worked on their tans, snorkeled and walked the island back and forth in flip flops (autch). This island was what we came here for: it's paradise (except for the damn sandflies, we look as if we've got the chickenpox again...)!! We arrived on a saturday evening and even though it was dark, we could feel the difference from the mainland. People welcomed us in english, or more exactly in creole, and everything seemed veeery laidback... We decided to celebrate our arrival and started etkot in our disgusting room at ... read more

GREETINGS ALL: PANAMA IS DEFINATELY THE PLACE TO BE. WENT TO THE CLUB FOR THE SECOND NIGHT IN A ROW AND YES IT WAS BUMPIN AS USUAL. I WISH THE CLUBS COULD BE THIS FUN IN LOS ANGELES. THE CLUB DIDN´T END TILL 33OAM AND PEOPLE WERE STILL OUTSIDE PLAYING MUSIC AND SOCIALIZING ON THE MAIN QUAD AREA IN THE TOWN. I WAS LIKE WOW IT WAY PAST MY BED TIME. IT SEEMS LIKE EVERYDAY HERE IS A HOLIDAY AND THAT IS SO BEAUTIFUL TO ME. I MUST TELL YOU ALL ABOUT THIS OTHER ISLAND ACROSS FROM BOCAS IT CALLED BASTIMIENTOS IS SO BEATUIFUL . IT IS A LOT LESS TOURIST THERE. AND IT IS FILLED WITH NOTHING BUT BLACK PEOPLE. I MET SOME BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE OVER THEIR. IT WAS SUCH A BLESSING TO BE HERE ... read more

We awaken early and walk down to the town for what quickly becomes one of my favorite things on our trip to Costa Rica, the typical breakfast consisting of eggs, rice and beans. Karin also loves all the fresh fruit. After breakfast, we hop into our tiny economy car which we called the “Volkswagen Speck” to begin our drive to Arenal. Driving in Costa Rica is sort of like being in the Paris-Dakar Rally. There is a general path that you follow, but as near as I could tell there are no actual lanes and certainly no rules. Drivers will routinely pass you on both the left and right and the potholes are the size of craters. You must be fully prepared to go from 80kph to 10kph in about 5 seconds and then be ready ... read more

Nancy and I threw our first "party" since being in Jamaica on Friday night. Okay, so it was more of a dinner than a party, and it consisted of Nancy and I, Lesroy (a seminarian from the island of St. Kitt), Phillip (a novice from Oregon), and Damian (a music teacher from Jamaica). We didn't actually eat until well after 9:00pm because Lesroy, Damian, and Nancy were all coming from a veeeeeeeery long choir practice at St. Pius, so Phillip and I ended up spending quite a bit of time and exerting quite a bit of love into the making of the meal. Can't go wrong with spaghetti, salad, and cheesy garlic bread. Mmmmm...cheese. The meal was muy delicioso...and I'm not just saying that because I helped cook it. Well, okay, so maybe I am. The ... read more

A joint effort by Nancy and Meg to add some more pictures for your viewing entertainment. It's a random collection of pictures, actually, but they offer a pretty good glimpse into Jamaican life - poverty and beauty all wrapped into one.... read more

We arrive early for our surfing lessons and Karin is starting to regret signing up. The guides assure her that it will be fun and they are right. We grab our long-boards and begin our trek to the beach. The waves are just right for beginners and break much longer than the waves we are used to on the east coast. After a brief lesson on the beach, we take to the water. Karin goes first and manages to get up on her first try. I was not so successful on the first attempt, but managed to surf 4-5 waves all the way to the beach by the end of the lesson. All-in-all the surfing lesson is a great success and I look forward to trying it again soon. After a quick bite for lunch, we ... read more
