Tonight was my despedida with my students. "Despedida" literally translates in English as "Goodbye" but it's the word they use for their farewell parties. I invited my students over to my house. About half of them came, which was fun. We played hide and seek, danced in the living room, ate baked goods, ordered pizza, and watched the video I made them. It was fun. Received a few gifts as well. Favourite was a frame with a message in it from a student. Her English is so poor but so cute. A small excerpt: "i know that you will remenber that we are friend 4ever because i will remember you like my best friend no like a teacher... I love you like you arefrom my family." Adorable. Despite the rain and grossness of the weather, ... read more

Well, my pics are all up. Check them out. Weird being back in Honduras. The house feels empty. Nadia and I are the only ones in the compound. It's a little scary... a little lonely. Also feels comforting seeing the sites I'm used to. Almost cried in the taxi yesterday... just felt good to be back to what I am used to. I can only imagine how going home to Canada will feel. Saw Walt lastnight. He's not doing so well. Found out he's out of work in a month or so. I'm worried about him. He's really in a funk. Feels like no one understands the real him. I can see that. He's not one to open up so easily. This week is going to be one sad visit after another. All leading up to ... read more

I realize I still have to update and write about Days 11 and 12. I started to lastnight but felt REALLY ill so I stopped. I had already checked into a hostel but decided to leave and find a place with a private room and bath, as I felt ill and thought it'd be better for resting. Good thing I did too. I spent my entire evening on the toilet or throwing up into a bucket. I finally went to a Pharmacy, had the man take my temperature (yes, I had a bit of a fever), then bought some sort of medicin from him. Once I took the medicine, the puking stopped but the shitting did not. I was up pretty much all night, but the nice thing was, it stopped for my 12 hours of ... read more

The last couple weeks have been full of goodbyes. Every day gets harder and harder, seeing more and more people leaving. Last Thursday was our last night together as a compound (minus Leah who has already head back to the US). Saturday was my last night at Villa Real. Sunday (yesterday) was Donray's Despedida (goodbye) at Morgan's. Today was handing out report cards to students, then dinner with Donray, Alisa, Walter, and I. Donray leaves tomorrow. I'm off to Guatemala tomorrow. Will have to say goodbye to Alisa. Said goodbye to Walter tonight for 2 weeks. Even that was hard... knowing that the next time we say goodbye will be for much longer. Lots of hugs. Lots of tears. Lots of goodbyes. Lots of memories. The pictures tell the story. ... read more

Netter, I have decided to post you some beautiful pics of the mango tree in my backyard. We have an over-abundance of mangos. I hate to say Netter, more of them rot than we eat. There are just too many. And to be honest, I'm not really a fan of mangoes. I also am slightly scared to go out in the backyard, as I have almost been killed by fruiting twice. No, seriously... they have missed my head by about a foot. They also wake me up when they fall, dropping onto the tin roof over our washing machine. That's scary. Big booms. Someone is going to get hurt one of these days. Actually, Chris was lying in his hammock and did have one drop on his chest, leaving a fairly significant bruise apparently. lol. Enjoy ... read more

It hasn't been the best of weeks for me. For some reason, things are just really starting to annoy me. I'm getting really tired of living the same day OVER and OVER again. I work with the same people that I go home to at the end of the day. These are the same people that we spend our evenings, and weekends with. We go to the same bars, the same restaurants, etc. It just gets to be fairly tedious. I'm surprised actually that I've lasted 10 months before feeling this annoyed. I'm just starting to feel really ready to come home. Alisa and I have been talking about this a lot lately. In fact, she's gone off to Tegus with Donray this weekend, just to get away from Comayagua. The city is just so small ... read more

Today was a really good day for our class. First were the Birthday Cards for Shane. A little while ago my mom sent me an e-mail about a posting she had seen at the gym about a boy who was undergoing chemotherapy for leukemia and his only wish for his 8th birthday was to receive 35 million birthday cards, and break the world record. I thought it was a cute idea but didn't give it much more thought. That was, until I saw the groups created on Facebook, and then did some research and found ALL kinds of websites dedicated to the cause. I couldn't believe it. I also started recieving messages from friends in Canada saying that their entire school board was taking place in the event. This made me excited and I decided ... read more

Here´s the update: Cesar has decided to take an extended weekend without any of us knowing. There are rumours that his mother is very sick. I had my class write ¨What I have learned in Grade 3 so far¨ and got some interesting responses. New approach to class (taken from Meg who took it from Donray). Every class is worth 8 marks for participation. Every student starts with 8 points. If they do not have the homework finished from the day before they lose 2 points. If they are not prepared with the proper materials for class they lose 2 points. During the class if they are doing anything they shouldn´t be doing (chewing gum, talking, out of their seat, etc.) they lose another point. EVERY class will have these marks. This new participation mark will ... read more

Yesterday was a shitty day. The computer teacher asked me to "cover" his class since he needed to go to Tegus for something, which meant yet another period with my class. I was so pissed off, so tired, and on the verge of screaming that I just sat in my desk marking. The kids kept asking me what books they needed. I told them whatever they wanted. Two free periods. 80 minutes of nothing. What kind of teacher does that? Since when have I given up and not cared? Most of the kids knew I was angry and didn't want to make me more angry, so sat in their desk working on things quietly. Others didn't care. They just kept on talking and goofing around. When have I EVER let kids walk all over me? What ... read more
