So in the three days of teaching at El Alba I have learned many things. Here is a brief list I have compiled that will hopefully help someone like me in the future. 1 - Every class is the same due to the fact that they each have a teachers pet, at least one class clown, one very bitter student (who has it out for you no matter how much you help them) and at least two very quiet students who sit in the back. 2 - Most my students claim that the other students are either gay, illiterate, poor or a telephone. 3 - Never try to engage the class clown in a discussion by asking for an example of a metaphore as opposed to a simile, because his answer will most likely be "Ramon ... read more

Well we had our first day of schol today. It was interesting to say the least. Where to begin... I had set my alarm for 5:30 so that I could review a bit before I headed off to school. School starts at 6:50 and I had first period free. However, My phone was set to silent because Sunday night I went up to see the Catholic service in the plaza. I only stayed for about five minutes, even in spanish a Catholic service will put you to sleep. There was a guy dresses in green and gold sitting in front of the alter and he was mumbling something about... I cant remember. Everyone was sitting in these really barbaric back breaking pews made out of wood. They had big spikes on the backs and the kneelers ... read more

So it turns out the guy who owns the internet cafe is named Tony and he is from New Jersey... Exit 7. He moved here with his internet business and managed to keep the Jersey accent. I hope I can keep my wonderful WNY accent, its already impressed the locals here in Central America. Anywho - to answer a few questions. 1 - Brian Zittle - Ruca was not left with the parents, I took her to Joyful rescues (www.joyfulrescues.com) and now my mom checks the website every day to see if she has been addopted. 2 - Al Dogs - I´m pretty sure they solved cancer here in Honduras. They are called Baleadas and they taste amazing. If they dont cure your cancer they DO go great with a fresh cup of pure Honduras coffee. ... read more

Its official - I have finaly moved into my place in Comayagua. I live next to a guy named Walter, he has a big puffy hat. The appartment is pretty nice. Airconditioning in the bedroom, a flushing toilet, heated shower and some furnature. Ill post some photos later on. I landed in Honduras on Wednesday and Karinas family was at the airport to meet me. San Pedro Sula was really hot and busy. It felt like a dirty china filled with mexicans. We went to her sisters house had dinner and it wasnt long until I busted out the Nintendo Wii. I learned that Karinas brother in law is really good at Super Mario Bros 3. On thursday they took me to Tela and I broke the "no swimming in the ocean" rule. Sorry Mom, if ... read more

What a trip. It was truly an amazing time. I went back to visit Walter, old students, Honduran friends, teacher friends, and the mountains that I've missed so much. I won't give all the details of what I did but some highlights included: - Jogging through the streets with Walt, Kenny, and Bryan, followed by watching the guys playing bball in the park - Visit to the centre where I used to volunteer, where I got to visit again with my sponsored child - Walt hiring a Mariachi band to play for me in the street as we walked by - Bar nights at Morgan's and Villa Real that felt like I never left - Parties with my amazing students who have grown more than I can fathom in the last year - Spending lazy afternoons ... read more

HOLA! Buenas dias, hope everyone is doing well! This week has been fabuloso and filled with bedtime stories, que hora es señor lobo (what time is it mister wolf,) gruelling hours perfecting the alphabet, frijoles y tortillas, mangoes and sleepovers at casa uno. Monday night I went to the cachoros (kinder-kids) room at bedtime and told them the story of the beautiful and kind witch of the children. She lives in your dreams and will give you whatever dreams you ask her for. We talked a bit about what they wanted to dream about that night, which was mostly playing soccer, playing with ponies, chickens and puppies, being a cowboy, or being with their mothers again. They yelled out questions about this strange and wonderful witch who they couldn´t believe was actually on their side! The ... read more

buenas tardes!!! this week has been a continuation of the beautiful life here! monday i started staying after the kinder classes to teach preparatory classes to the 5-6 year olds to get them ready to go into grade one. the teacher just told me to teach whatever i thought was appropriate so weve started practicing letters and numbers. it started off beautifully, with all the children reciting their numbers back to me in perfect unison and some even helping others. within 15 minutes of the class though, there were pencil sword fights, someone was under the teachers desk balling his eyes out because someone else kicked him, the cutest and most mischievious twins ever were tag-teaming classroom mayhem with one dancing on the tables and stomping kids fingers and homework, while the other ran around ripping ... read more

BUENAS DIAS!!! sorry for the wait on the email...i wrote a mini novel to everyone on friday but the power cut out just before I pressed send! It seems crazy that I´ve only been here a week and a half so far! Everything in la Villa San Antonio runs pretty much as it did 15-20 years ago, which makes it easy to slip out of time. This place is so rich in detail and whatever´s in front of you demands a full experience, whether it´s spinning kids around, licking mango juice of your hands or scrubbing clothes on the washboard. The kids here are all so loving, creative, talented, caring, absolutely beautiful and 10 other wonderful adjectives I haven´t yet thought of! They love to tease and trick me and I normally have to ask 5 ... read more

Buenas dias!! Where to start... I got into the Hogar a couple days ago in a complete daze! It´s me and 2 other volunteers (kati and matt), and we´re all pretty much left to make our own agendas and help out wherever and whenever we want to. the frst week here they told me to float around and see what i like doing, and hopefully ill get a chance to work with the social worker and will start teaching english classes on Monday with kati, who´s been running them for 3 months already. The hogar is in a tiny dusty little village called La Villa San Antonio, and is separated into 3 houses on the block. theres casa dos, which is a house for the older boys, casa uno for the younger boys, which also has ... read more

Well, I leave in a half hour for the airport. I can't believe it's that time already. Friday night was awesome. Walter's friend Douglas came over to Walt's apartment, we shared some drinks then went to Morgan's bar. I saw Kenny and a bunch of Walter's other friends. Kenny told me he was sad to be losing me. He said that he was sad he didn't have a wonderful woman in his life. I told him he'd find one. He said he wished to find one just like me. So sweet. Saturday I spent most of the day at Walt's. In the evening we went out to Salsa House... a new bar that opened last week, right next door to Morgan's. All Walt's friends were there. It was a difficult evening. Many tears... taking turns being ... read more
