OK !! ) . Il est donc ... read more

Once a week, I have a class meeting with my students. We talk about things we like about the class and things we would like to change and the best way to make those changes. In the true spirit of 5th grade class meetings here is a list of things I love about teaching in Honduras and a list of things that I would change if I could: Things I Love About Teaching in Honduras: 1. My fifth graders aren't too cool to give me hugs and kisses. 2. The preparatoria (grade between kindergarten and first) kids, for whose class I subbed for a week and a half, give great bear hugs every morning when I come to school. 3. Teachers in Honduras can hug and cuddle kids back without worry of disciplinary action or a ... read more

Well, I've been here now for 3 months. I can't believe it's been that long. That's longer than a whole summer at camp. It doesn't feel that long. Perhaps I'm getting used to everything and truly enjoying myself. Along with being in a country for 90 days, comes the drama of having to leave the country and then return, in order to get your time extended by an additional 90 days. Last year they would simply put the teachers in a van, send them all to the El Salvador border, cross, get lunch, come back, and their time is extended by 90 more days. The problem with this now, is that there's a new deal between Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala that allows free travel between the countries without a passport. This means these countries ... read more

… said by one of my students in a paper I had all the students write. They were being really bad today. They wouldn’t stop talking and fooling around. They were constantly out of their seats and weren’t responding to any of the classroom management strategies that were in place. I decided to just stop teaching (mid-science lesson) and sit at my desk. They eventually got the idea that I was upset with them. Jose asked me if I was mad. I said yes and just sat there hole-punching a bunch of sheets for the next week. I then got up and went to the bathroom. I should mention at this point, that leaving your students unattended is not a concern of the school’s. I was super careful about it in the first few weeks and ... read more

I've already made the realization that being a teacher in Honduras is MUCH different than being a teacher at home, but something really hit me hard yesterday. One of my favourite students (the little pirate from a picture I posted way back) has been acting up a lot in class lately. He talks all the time when I am talking, and is often out of his seat and interupting class. Two days ago he ended up on the "red light" of my discipline stoplight, so a letter was sent home (one that Mr. Chris so nicely wrote up for me in Spanish, so that all I have to do is circle the problem the child was having in class). Well, yesterday the student comes up to me and is laughing, telling me something in Spanish and ... read more

Thought I'd post some fun pics that didn't fit into the other entries, that other teachers have taken, or that I just realised I had. I also tried to figure out the videos and thought I had them loaded but then couldn't publish my entry so that sucks. Oh well. Enjoy!... read more

Things to NOT take advantage of as a Teacher Back Home - Having a photocopier with a password that allows you to do your own photocopying, instead of dropping it off to someone, hoping that it will be done properly and on time (usually needs to be dropped off a day in advance) - Having a curriculum to follow - MUCH better than teaching out of ONE given book per subject - Children’s Books - these are hard to find here, especially in English - A Gymnasium - when all you have is a basketball court outside in the heat, it can be tricky for large games or activities you are hoping to accomplish - A school where noise doesn’t carry - teaching in a school that is set up like a mall (where sounds are ... read more
