Hello all, Been a reasonably quiet week this week, been cloudy off and on which good as cooler especially at nights! Also means less feeding of the iguanas, which can take a hour or so and is hot work getting in and out of the cages. Mind you weekend was quite busy as we tried a new bar called La Pirata by the ferry dock, only 25 lims a beer and were showing Chelsea Man City game, went back there Sunday too to watch USA against Canada for Olypics Ice Hockey Gold, was packed obv with canadians and americans, we supported Canada.lol Two new arrivals this week, timothy from Watford and Sammi from manchester, picked both up from the ferry mon and tuesday, we took sammy to a few bars even though he was tired but ... read more

Been another busy week here in Utila and has been very hot other than a couple of days when a storm passed over us, did not rain but was very windy. This meant that 3 of the volunteers who were due to leave were stuck here as the ferry was not running. A new couple arrived this week, Dave and Ann from Liverpool (The Wirral) and the previous week Linus a 20 yr old German who is now my room mate. He speaks excellent English and walks around bare foot finding bugs and snakes! He had a tarantula in his hand this week, he brought a surfboard with him too, though I don’t think there is anywhere to surf due to the reef! We had finally completed the school house, looks pretty cool and so we ... read more

On the way to pumpkin hill there is a hill called Brandon Hill and on this hill is Brandon caves, the locals call them the bat caves. We walked here a few weeks ago but not had a chance to write up the blog so here it is! The caves have several species of bats in them, mainly fruit bats but there are some 1 metre wing span vampire bats here too, the largest bat in the northern hemisphere! They don’t bite humans or cattle they eat small birds. We were told they have their own chamber but we did not go and see them as you have to explore deeper into the caves. Stories go that captain Henry Morgan the welsh pirate hid his treasure on the island and the bat caves is a place ... read more

Been busy finishing the school house, rained for 2 days here as still rainy season, we had 120 mm of rain in two days! I know that as i took the chore of reading the pluviometer twice a day this week (pluviometer is a plastic rain capture device for measuring mm/m2). So the rain held up the school as we have been painting and laying electrics, grand openeing next week with the island mayor coming as well as school governors etc we are having a roast hog for the opening cant wait! last sat and sunday started my PADI open water, at ... read more

Have been meaning to write a blog about the station since I got here but not managed it yet, so here goes! Have also managed to get some better pictures over the time as well, been here four weeks now already! I think I said before that the island of Utila has several animals Endemic to the island the Swamper iguana (Centanauri bakeri) also called wishi willy by the locals, being one of them. A biologist discovered the swamper over a hundred years ago but all his papers were lost until the 90´s when a german biologist came to the island and took an interest in the swamper. The swamper is on the critically endangered list and probably always will be because it is endemic, even though the station has been successful in increasing the population. ... read more

This blog is to tell you a bit more about the island of Utila. The island is one of three islands called the Bay Islands about an hour boat ride NE of Honduras in the Caribbean Sea and its only 7 miles by about 3 miles in size. The island was discovered by Christopher Columbus and the islanders still speak a sort of english carribbean spanish mix! the locals seem very friendly. The roads are concrete and seem like golf course paths! There are only a few trucks on the island the majority use push bikes or mopeds and quads and golf carts are popular, with a few tuk tuk taxis. You need to listen out so as to not get run over! The island was created by volcanic activity which caused the coral bed to ... read more

Hi all, thanks for the messages via the blog site. Every Thursday at The Iguana Research Station we go on an excursion. The guys already here said one week they went to a beach on the island and helped dig up whale bones from a stranded whale a while back! This week we set off to the North of the island, had my expectations but as you will see from the photos it was amazing. The station has spare clothes left from previous volunteers so got myself a pair of trousers and a dodgy pink hat! Knew we would get muddy! We all made ourselves a pack lunch for the beach we would be visiting via our hike and set off into the jungle and then the surroundings changed to the mangroves, very muddy! a few ... read more

After everyone had a long sleep, we all went down to the dock to lay in the sun. Matt, Jeff, and Justin have there last dive at 1:00pm and I planned to walk around the island taking photos. James decided it was going to be another party day along with Kelly. They went off together for the day. Clouds rolled in so our days wouldn't be as great. I headed off with my camera but the dull grey sky killed all my shots I think. There were some nice rock formations though so maybe I got some good ones. I stopped at some of the local stores to pick up a souvenir and some awesome baleadas (tortillas with beans). The boys got back from their dive and again had a great time. They saw some huge ... read more

Well this entry is going to be pretty short as you will know from the previous one. I awoke at around 10 to see all my roomates asleep along with Morris, our Irish friend, sleeping on Jeff's bed. Jeff was in the spare bed in the room asleep as well. The funny story of the morning was Morris and Jeff. It started at the bar around 4am when Morris decided to go for a swim off the bar's dock. He gave Jeff his keys to his apartment along with his other valuables then jumped in. Jeff being drunk puttered off leaving Morris with nothing. So for then next two and a half hours he searched for Jeff, not finding him so not able to go to his apartment. He came to our room at 6:30 in ... read more
